    The Dark Knight Returns’s ending fight with Superman works because Miller spent the whole book setting up their contrasting ideals caused by their different views and roles in a complex Cold War world, and how these two characters already have a relationship spanning decades. That fight had 20 years of in-universe buildup. Miller’s Batman is not a hero, he’s not an Iron Man. It’s not an Avengers type story, it’s an Old Man Logan type story, and you can’t put that character in what was supposed to be the DCEU’s first Avengers movie. You don’t put Old Man Logan in your very first X-men movie.

    Here's the part that always got me with Superman.
    He knows. He knows he's fucking terrifying, he knows that what he can do scares people, so how he deals with that is to be the best example of Mr. Truth Justice and The American Way, he smiles at everyone, rescues cats from trees, talks people down from killing themselves because he knows there's more to life than that and that's what makes people like him, he's supposed to be the heart. He takes the hits so his team doesn't have to because he knows that he can.
    He doesn't show up when people are begging to be saved by slowly floating over them and looking sad. He would save them all as fast as he can, tell them it's going to be alright, flash them a big smile and zip off to help someone else who needs it.

    • @zhengyingli

      But think about if that scene was done in the Justice League animated show (which everyone compares it to I know but there's a merit for it) first thing you can bet that Superman would do in that show is start talking to the folk as he arrived, letting them know they were gonna be alright, he was gonna help them etc.
      Now compare that to floating there in moot silence looking as mortified as the people you're there to save. Y'know what I mean man?

    Ironically, Frank Miller (who wrote many of the stories this film mis-adapts and references) hates the concept of "realistic" superheroes, or the "what if?" scenario this film is built around.

    • @ThePinkMan
      @ThePinkMan 8 лет назад +112

      Yeah, despite being known for his "dark and gritty" interpretations of Daredevil and Batman, Miller never actually abandoned the fantasticism and humor associated with traditional comic book stories. The Dark Knight Returns featured the Joker riding around on a flying doll that shouted insults and spewed toxic laughing gas.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones 8 лет назад +7

      The fantastic elements weren't abandoned. Did you not notice kryptonite gas bombs, Doomsday, Batwing, batarangs, heat vision, time traveling Flash, 5000-year-old Amazon women, etc.? Nolan's movies were limited to the "realistic" elements, not Snyder's who FULLY embraces all the comic book elements. He even was the first director to not give Batman a black suit. The ridiculous, bogus criticisms of this movie never end.

    • @YungM.D.
      @YungM.D. 8 лет назад +124

      jedijones Sure he didn't ABANDON those elements. But that's precisely the problem. He's telling this story set in "our" world (cameos by real-world celebrities reacting to the Superman crisis, real world chains, etc.) but without conforming to the real world's rules. He's trying to make a silly, over-the-top comic book movie set in a sci-fi/fantasy world while also telling a "Watchmen"-like "what if heroes existed in our real world?" story at the same time

    "Corny Christopher Reeve Superman cannot exist in 2016" But hasn't Marvel largely proven that somewhat wrong with Chris Evan's Captain America? Even in 2016 not everyone is a dark souled cynic. Marvel understood that dichotomy and has given us what should be the Batman/Superman character split in Iron Man/Captain America. And made it work in a believable modern way, without sacrificing the "nice" and the "corniness" of the character. Snyder is just a hack with nothing but dark imagery in his head. (mostly dark blue)

    • @zhengyingli

      Steve Rogers has no powers compared to Superman. He has the exact same gift as the Batman... the ability to indulge in self-righteousness and certainty because of his own limited power to impose it on others. The lack of great power, allows him to be irresponsibly absolute with limited consequences. It's a false- and frightening- equivalence to suggest Superman should inspire in the way Rogers does. Rogers with Superman's power is terrifying and it's horrifying to imagine people wanting a being of that power to pander to them in the same way.

    • @michelmurray9914
      @michelmurray9914 7 лет назад +57

      So instead of actually acknowledging the overall optimistic spirit that the OP was referencing in 70's Superman and MCU Captain America, you decide to insult Steve and find whatever negative thing you can over-exaggerate just to try and enhance your false point?
      Steve may not have great power like Clark, but he knows what it is, and does his best to trust the people wielding it and not the power itself. First Avenger and Winter Soldier shows this ideal at its best, while Civil War, and even Age of Ultron to an extent, show some of its more negative elements. It is foolish, or at least disingenuous, to say that ( especially after First Avenger's message that a good man doesn't let power corrupt them) Steve would be a terrible user of Superman's powers. At best, Steve is a mix of Superman and Batman: a righteous boy-scout with great morals(Superman) who can slide into stubbornness and self-righteousness (Batman) if pushed too far (like in Civil War).
      Clark and Steve are, in spirit, very similar characters who tend to be optimistic and idealistic. They are traditionally leaders and paragons that their peers tend to look to for strength and/or leadership. To compare them is very understandable, even in the films.
      In defense of Hobokitty (that's a weird image), they're simply saying that disregarding most of Superman's traditional idealism from the 70's is not doing the new films many favors and is using MCU Cap as an example of a rather corny character being taken seriously in modern day, but not sacrificing too much the corniness that makes these characters so enduring. (Granted, he shouldn't have called Snyder a hack).

      I think another benefit Captain America’s story has is that he was frozen in time. He can jump into the first Avengers all hopeful and idealistic because the last conflict he was in was WWII. That’s as black and white morality as you can get. Think about how jaded he gets in between Winter Soldier and Infinity War, he throws away his shield.
      Snyder’s Superman grew up in post911 America. There’s no way he could be campy Reeves Superman without coming across disingenuous.
      The problem is Man of Steel is an interesting idea on paper, might have even been a good standalone movie, but it should have never been a tent pole for a damn superhero universe

      I credit this movie and reviews of it with the widespread revival of the term "Idiot Plot" that Roger Ebert often used (not sure if he coined it himself). This is a movie plot that is not just stupid, but stupid in a particular way: it's one where the main conflict that drives the story depends on the characters being "idiots" in the specific sense that if they stopped to have a short conversation about what was going on, the conflict would resolve itself.

Zack and these writers put together a fascinating story and screenplay in BVS that is so much more deep, thoughtful and intelligent than what Marvel does. The non-Marvel Studios movies like Spider-Man 2 and the best X-Men films are the only superhero movies to come close to this intelligence level.

Instead, what does BvS show us?
      -Someone who could rule as tyrant... who instead serves mankind
      -Someone roundly criticized who could capture the spotlight to rebuff his critics... staying silent without ego.
      -Someone who could intervene in anything... who instead leaves mankind to make its own choices.
      -Someone who could unmask and undo the Batman... who instead offers the mercy of retirement.
      -Someone who could take the Batman's life for the sake of his mother... who instead offers his own.
      -Someone who is not beholden to human law... who tries to uphold it.
      -Someone who is not beholden to human governance... who submits himself to its authority.
      -Someone who has no need to submit to a boss... who submits to his boss as a human.
      -Someone who is not a human from Earth... who accepts his adoption and is incredibly human.
      If someone has that kind of power, I'm inspired by his incredible character and restraint in using it. It might be exciting to see those who oppose authority, compromise, procedure, and reason... and consider rebellion recommended... but Superman's power makes him an authority unto himself and his story is in how he refuses to force it on the world, not how he uses it to undo it.

      @@zhengyingli I didn't say that superman should be inspired from steve roger nor steve rogers should have superman's power. I'm just simply stating that based captain america's personality is quite similar to what you will imagine modern superman would be, especially if you know superman from the animated series. Sure they are not 100% identical in terms of personality, but like I said they are similar, not identical.
      They’re both as heroic as it gets in comic books. There isn’t a hair’s breadth between them in that regard. Noble, upright, do what’s right just because it’s right, Boy Scouts, both of them. They are extremely similar characters. People who are focused on relative power levels are missing the point of comic book heroes. Powers come & powers go but moral rectitude is forever.

      @@Arpin_Lusene And Superman would be a fearsome character with Steve's attitude. The relationship between the characters powers and their behaviors can't be understated since those powers have different consequences depending on the characters' actions. • @Arpin_Lusene
      @Arpin_Lusene 6 лет назад +26

      @@zhengyingli In terms of morality they are both about as good as it gets. They always do what's right, regardless of how hard it is or what others will think. It's harder for Cap, of course, because he doesn't possess the godlike power that Superman has, but Superman also battles far more powerful enemies. Superman can call the shots more easily, because who is going to tell him no?
      If they switched powers, I don't think either would change. Superman would keep doing what's right, with less power, and Cap would keep doing what's right, with more power.
