I've been to a lot of improv, and the reason it's enjoyable is that you *know* it's improv, and that's it's hard, so when it comes together for a few moments you really enjoy and respect it. But you *can't* substitute it for writing.

It’s a formula that worked so well specifically for that show. You can’t just copy and paste that concept into other genres with different people and expect the same results.
Why does the director take pride in not having scripted dialogue? It's like your child bragging to his parents that he's gonna wing the science exam tomorrow.
Sometimes not having scripted lines helps if handled right. Rick and Morty doesn't have a lot of script writing. They have a general outline of how an episode is going to go and tell the voice actors where they want to go. When the voice actors come up with something the writers can work with the voice actors to make the delivery hilarious. There is some script writing for the very heavy scenes but it's mostly ad-libbed and organic. Unfortunately Paul fieg isn't smart enough to pull that off.
Because if you ace the exam while saying you're winging it, you get credit for being a genius. No one's impressed by a good grade after 20 hours of studying. If you deliver a blockbuster after claiming it's all improv, your actors and director get credit for being geniuses, instead of the _writers_ getting the credit. Of course, the flipside is if you fail your exam or your movie... then you're shown up as just being dumb.

In Summary: Paul Feig- a passionate feminist and spiteful little man who's spent the past several months burning every possible bridge he could find between audiences and the movie- gets handed the Ghostbusters reboot. In this movie a failed academic, an obese woman, a lesbian, and a black woman wage war against an intangible evil society tells them doesn't exist. In the end, they defeat the villain- a virgin nerd who wants to destroy them because people beat him up in high school- by castrating him after he literally transforms into the Ghostbusters logo. You can't make this shit up. I'm so amazed somebody didn't stop this from happening.

The original Ghostbusters movie was a blue collar film with blue collar dialogue and values. Isolated college professors are forced out of the educational system to find real work. They are litterally forced to become exterminators/dog catchers. Half the film is them getting comfortable in labor jobs. Dealing with customers, lugging heavy equipment around, using tools... That's also sorely missing from the new reboot.

The reason why Bill Murray was in this movie was because he was forced to do it. Paul Feig threatened to take "legal action" against Murray because he refused to be a part of it multiple times. In case you didn't like Paul Feig enough.
They might have found a way to try and pull his ownership of the Ghostbusters franchise. After Harold Ramis died, Bill Murray was the only holdout against future Ghostbusters movies. In a 2012 Esquire interview, Aykroyd said that Murray may have "abrogated his ownership rights" when he declined to star in an earlier Ghostbusters 3. While this didn't go anywhere, Sony might have threatened to take him to court to actually get this issue legally resolved.

Notice how in 2019 all traces of GB reboot have disappeared? It's because it was an Altered World Event, like in CONTROL. The FBC came in and quarantined the OoP that caused the rift, so now no one remembers or cares.

As we get closer and closer to Afterlife- which actually looks good, some of the ideas they're discussing here are getting me even more amped for the long awaited, true *sequel.* Proper homage is being paid and I couldn't be happier.

I just realized the reason why everyone seems to like Chris Hemsworth's character the most. It's because he stayed in character the entire fucking movie. He was the only person out of all of them to do what he was paid to do, fucking act.
It's really not nostalgia. If you don't watch that movie today and laugh and smile and enjoy yourself then there is something wrong with you. Everything, from the casting, the characterisation, the jokes, the story beats, the music, the supporting characters, the prop design (proton packs, Slimer etc), the effects. It even has a few moments that are genuinely scary. All topped off with a gloriously crazy ending. It's a definitive 80's movie and one of the best comedies of all time. I don't know what more you want out of it. In what way could it be better?

This review should be showing in theaters everywhere, then I could spend $12 on going to see it instead of the new Ghostbusters and be more entertained. If you run it twice, that's about an hour and a half.

It's amazing to me how this is an issue whilst Denis Villeneuve has pretty much mastered the concept of "yeah, my lead is female, but it doesn't matter". Sicario and Arrival had female leads but did it matter? No. It was well written, masterfully edited drama that just happened to be female led and no-one noticed because it was incredible writing. Women can so easily be leads in action films, just as long as it's well controlled. Emily Blunt is one of the finest most versatile actors working today. From pot smoking cleaner to ROYALTY to assassin. Women can do it. It's just a case of producers being willing to accept this fact.
Films having female leads isn't a big deal. Or at least it wasn't until the appearance of various modern anti-feminist movements, the existence of which this film's principals awkwardly attempted to leverage for marketing purposes.

I never saw new Ghostbusters, but I watched this review like, 5 times (5 x 45 mins). Plus Plinkett review, like, 5 times (5 x 58 mins). And every time, after those reviews, I watch original Ghostbusters.
I keep coming back to this review every so many months. I think its reaching the point I can quote the review moreso than the original Ghostbusters movie.
Two years later to the day, and it's exactly as Jay predicted: "Ghostbusters" continues to refer to the original film, while "Ghostbusters 2016" refers to a horrendously unfunny remake that totally bombed at the box office. When people mention the reboot, they immediately think, "bad movie."
"here's an existing property, now we can make it our own" that's always a bad sign for any sort of remake, adaptation, or anything like that, unless the original was bad.
I don't like the movie but your comment makes no sense to me. Why make an adaptation/remake of something if you're not going to make it your own? Seems like that would make the endeavor pointless. David Cronenberg made "The Fly" his own, as did John Carpenter when he made the "The Thing" remake. The worst remakes lazily follow the original plot to a T and throw in lazy pandering references.
Pocketses McFlurry I think that should be something that improves on a faulty movie, Ghostbusters is pretty much perfect, those other two remakes are improving those movies.

Might as well try something different so it can at least attempt justifying it's own existence.
Force awakens by itself was good enough for a setup. Last Jedi could have addressed its issues and, like, be anything other than it came to be and it could have been solid. Problem is, they have to actually answer those questions they raised.

Just watched this movie for the first time and something that stuck out to me was the lighting. There's so much neon blues reds and greens in the background that when they do take out those proton packs and start shooting it's not exciting because your eyes are already saturated with all the cartoony ghosts and lights in the background. They shot the climax of the movie in fucking times square, one of the brightest most flashy places on earth. If they wanted to make the proton packs special, go someplace dark and shoot the scene. Compared to the original with practical effects, makeup and miniatures this movie is dogshit.
One thing I love about the original, I'm 21 and enjoy 80's movies mind you, is that the Proton Packs were adamantly heavy. Hell, the movie commentary director mentioned that Harold Ramis complained the least about how heavy they were. So basically, it made sense in the story because it was incredible technology. But 2016 made them lightweight and made the busters themselves into badass warriors doing flips n' shit. I liked the original because it was a DISADVANTAGE against a fucking God.

A lot of people talk about how Ghostbusters (2016) was intended from the get-go to be a female empowerment movie. While that's not far-fetched, another RUclipsr, Comic Book Girl 19, brings up an interesting point that the feminist spin to the movie was really an attempt from Sony to cover up the fact that they really just made a shitty movie. They released the trailer, saw the negative backlash, saw some feminist retaliation against the backlash, and then realized they could fuel the flames to cover up their horrible mistake of a film. Her bottom line is that the Sony executives (and big TV/movie executives in general) are just lazy fucks that don't want to put effort into making an original, creative movie with substance, so they milk old franchises and make sequels and reboots and spin them in whatever way boosts ticket sales or views.

I was not aware of that. I did say (or at the very least imply) that I was open to both the planned and lazy possibilities. Either way, it doesn't really matter. In the end, they defeat the villain- a virgin nerd who wants to destroy them because people beat him up in high school- by castrating him after he literally transforms into the Ghostbusters logo.

The original Ghostbusters movie was a blue collar film with blue collar dialogue and values. Isolated college professors are forced out of the educational system to find real work. They are litterally forced to become exterminators/dog catchers. Half the film is them getting comfortable in labor jobs. Dealing with customers, lugging heavy equipment around, using tools... That's also sorely missing from the new reboot.

They might have found a way to try and pull his ownership of the Ghostbusters franchise. After Harold Ramis died, Bill Murray was the only holdout against future Ghostbusters movies. While this didn't go anywhere, Sony might have threatened to take him to court to actually get this issue legally resolved.

This film highlights how damn good the original film was.
The original was never that good to begin with actually. 80s nostalgia/rose colored glasses.
It's really not nostalgia. If you don't watch that movie today and laugh and smile and enjoy yourself then there is something wrong with you.
Everything, from the casting, the characterisation, the jokes, the story beats, the music, the supporting characters, the prop design (proton packs, Slimer etc), the effects. It even has a few moments that are genuinely scary. All topped off with a gloriously crazy ending.
It's a definitive 80's movie and one of the best comedies of all time. I don't know what more you want out of it. In what way could it be better?

It's amazing to me how this is an issue whilst Denis Villeneuve has pretty much mastered the concept of "yeah, my lead is female, but it doesn't matter". Sicario and Arrival had female leads but did it matter? No. It was well written, masterfully edited drama that just happened to be female led and no-one noticed because it was incredible writing. Women can so easily be leads in action films, just as long as it's well controlled. Emily Blunt is one of the finest most versatile actors working today. From pot smoking cleaner to ROYALTY to assassin. Women can do it. It's just a case of producers being willing to accept this fact.
Films having female leads isn't a big deal. Or at least it wasn't until the appearance of various modern anti-feminist movements, the existence of which this film's principals awkwardly attempted to leverage for marketing purposes.
Just gotta agree that Emily Blunt is great.
Your point is valid, except for the small fact that both these Villeneuve movies were original creations that had the time to test themselves. Paul Feig just took an established property and retconned it.

I never saw new Ghostbusters, but I watched this review like, 5 times (5 x 45 mins). Plus Plinkett review, like, 5 times (5 x 58 mins). And every time, after those reviews, I watch original Ghostbusters.
I keep coming back to this review every so many months. I think its reaching the point I can quote the review moreso than the original Ghostbusters movie.
Two years later to the day, and it's exactly as Jay predicted:
"Ghostbusters" continues to refer to the original film, while "Ghostbusters 2016" refers to a horrendously unfunny remake that totally bombed at the box office.
When people mention the reboot, they immediately think, "bad movie."
They even changed the title to the new one, now it's called "Ghostbusters - Answer the call"
7 years later and it's still true.
"here's an existing property, now we can make it our own" that's always a bad sign for any sort of remake, adaptation, or anything like that, unless the original was bad.
I don't like the movie but your comment makes no sense to me. Why make an adaptation/remake of something if you're not going to make it your own? Seems like that would make the endeavor pointless. David Cronenberg made "The Fly" his own, as did John Carpenter when he made the "The Thing" remake. The worst remakes lazily follow the original plot to a T and throw in lazy pandering references.
Pocketses McFlurry I think that should be something that improves on a faulty movie, Ghostbusters is pretty much perfect, those other two remakes are improving those movies.
But if you're going to remake something that's pretty much perfect (which is a stupid idea anyway) I'd rather see someone's unique take on the basic concept than a studio-friendly inferior recreation of what I've already seen. Might as well try something different so it can at least attempt justifying it's own existence.

Force awakens by itself was good enough for a setup. Last Jedi could have addressed its issues and, like, be anything other than it came to be and it could have been solid. Rian Johnson just burned all the bridges that were perfectly fine. Problem was the bridges were made of wood and Rian was let near it with matches and a can of gasoline.

He didn't research the original trilogy, the animated series or even the prequels. I doubt he even watched the force awakens more than one time.
I don't blame TFA for its plot holes, since it was meant as a setup for a trilogy. Questions like these is what a trilogy uses to keep it engaging.
Problem is, they have to actually answer those questions they raised.
@@nextlifeonearth Riun may have burnt the bridge, but TFA is super boring to watch because all of it is setup and all the pay off is promised in the next movie. Riun definitely could have ran with some (not even all) the ideas and made a much better movie. But TFA was fan pandering nonsense with a lot of "we'll explain it in the sequels". So even if Last jedi was great, TFA is still a boring mess that was banking on it's sequels to make sense of this shit.
They aren’t completely wrong. Star Wars got it right by keeping it in the same universe.

nostalgia critic not funny, he just talks at the camera for however long
Just watched this movie for the first time and something that stuck out to me was the lighting. There's so much neon blues reds and greens in the background that when they do take out those proton packs and start shooting it's not exciting because your eyes are already saturated with all the cartoony ghosts and lights in the background. They shot the climax of the movie in fucking times square, one of the brightest most flashy places on earth. If they wanted to make the proton packs special, go someplace dark and shoot the scene. Compared to the original with practical effects, makeup and miniatures this movie is dogshit.
Not to mention their proton packs look they were bought from Etsy and the ecto one looked like someone just dropped a telephone pole on it.

One thing I love about the original, I'm 21 and enjoy 80's movies mind you, is that the Proton Packs were adamantly heavy. Hell, the movie commentary director mentioned that Harold Ramis complained the least about how heavy they were. So basically, it made sense in the story because it was incredible technology. But 2016 made them lightweight and made the busters themselves into badass warriors doing flips n' shit. I liked the original because it was a DISADVANTAGE against a fucking God.
Thanks from adding that part about not feeling bad about not liking it. I wanted to see it, but it just didn't look good. The end where mike said he didn't like it because it had women in it, cracked me up. :p

A lot of people talk about how Ghostbusters (2016) was intended from the get-go to be a female empowerment movie. While that's not far-fetched, another RUclipsr, Comic Book Girl 19, brings up an interesting point that the feminist spin to the movie was really an attempt from Sony to cover up the fact that they really just made a shitty movie. They released the trailer, saw the negative backlash, saw some feminist retaliation against the backlash, and then realized they could fuel the flames to cover up their horrible mistake of a film.
Her bottom line is that the Sony executives (and big TV/movie executives in general) are just lazy fucks that don't want to put effort into making an original, creative movie with substance, so they milk old franchises and make sequels and reboots and spin them in whatever way boosts ticket sales or views.
Yeah Midnight's Edge did a whole series on how it was hijacked from Ivan Reitman by Paul Feig and Amy Pascal.

Huh. I was not aware of that. I did say (or at the very least imply) that I was open to both the planned and lazy possibilities.
Either way, it doesn't really matter. A crappy movie was made and it generated a giant non-controversy for profit (which I don't know how good or bad the movie did in the box office, but I would assume it flopped).
