The subpar framing and horrendous blocking are a real drawback. Even with how disastrous Danny Jansen was, he was still getting starts with Bello because Wong’s just not particularly good at the actual catching part of catching. However, Teel probably needs more time in Triple A, and Wong does add a quality bat to the lineup. I think he has a very clear role in the club as “the guy” behind the backstop until Teel is ready to fully take over (and, worse case, our full time catcher if Teel doesn’t turn out).

Can’t imagine they move on from him just yet. They need to sign a defensive catcher in the off-season and give Teel the time he needs at Worcester to get truly major league ready.

Wong had a bad defensive year but it was a bit of an outlier compared to last couple years not that he's ever been a gold glove guy.
That being said I think he's the perfect guy for us right now. He's solid and I don't feel he has an ego but of course that's feom the outside, and he has a ton of versatility that we know this organization loves. I would 100% keep him and transition him to the backup role whenever Teel is ready without having to rush him. His versatility then allows you to get him into the lineup without having to remove Teel (assuming they are the two in Boston) I just don't think you could find a guy that's able to do all of that and that wouldn't have other issues. Sure you could bring in a Adley but what would that cost even if you could get him? Wong is the right guy at the right time to be the bridge to Teel and be able to give you things other catchers can't when he does move to the backup role.

I appreciate you delving into every rumor and breaking it down. Especially since at this time of the year there is not a lot of content available.
Trading Wong off-season does not make sense to me. I think Teel would benefit with more time at AAA, and putting the starting role on him out of the chute is pressure he does not need. I think the Sox should sign a defensive minded catcher to pair with Wong until Teel is ready, then evaluate moving someone at the deadline.
I am looking forward to trade proposals where we as a fan base can go, YES!, this trade makes so much sense.

  • @dennisbanks8606

Trading Wong instead of super prospects or Casas lol makes way more sense to me!! We can play the future now if Teal is up to the challenge. Only deal Wong if the other team is overvaluing him and the piece we get is totally worth it. We deal from power with a young catcher.

  • @RickBarnett
    @RickBarnett 2 дня назад +4

Keep Wong for now until you see how Teel holds up in the Majors. You'd have to get an above average haul for Wong in order to trade him, and with that defense You may not get what is needed. Also you really need to sign another catcher who is defensive minded and not sure how many are out there and would want to come here knowing they will not be a starting catcher for very long. I would hold on to Wong, see if he improves defensively at all to raise the trade value even further, and see how Teel does then possibly trade him at the deadline next year like you said. Glad you took the pros and cons approach to this, made it a lot easier to make a decision. We may have to start calling you Professor Corbin.

I agree with you about your assessment of Wong. There is one major missing in this video. Jansen and Reese McGuire are gone. Who replaces those guys first before any possible Connor Wong trades? Many of the catcher free agents are pretty old. They already need two catchers because Teel won't be ready until at least June or July. Wong is also right-handed.

  • @metaldams78

I hate to bring this up and I’m not an advocate for what I’m about to say - but there’s also a chance Teel is the number one catcher and Wong plays more first base due to trading Casas for pitching. He did play 14 games there last year, after all.
Wong is acceptable with the bat and there is maybe a 10 - 20 percent chance by my guess this happens. I would be livid, but due to the purse strings of ownership, I wouldn’t put it past them.
On a brighter note, I am appreciating last night’s ALCS game immensely today.

This should get worked out during/after the season, not before. Teel isn't ready yet, Wong is young and his defense might improve, and Wong's trade value is likely lower than it will be later. Also, if Wong and Teel both work out, that gives you one LH catcher and one RH, both long-term, which is pretty ideal.

  • @The300Show

If the Sox feel like Teel is ready and they can get a good return for Wong, I’d say it’s worth at least exploring.
A catcher that is slightly above average at one or two defensive metrics and bottom of the league at much more important metrics like blocking and framing isn’t worth starting on the field.
An offense first catcher has to be an absolute force with the bat to make sense to me.

You have a bunch of candidates for 2B so what is the answer? I think catcher is def need this offseason. Carson Kelly or Austin hedges for backup/split time or maybe trade for Willson Contreras if you think Teel isn’t ready until the second half

But I don’t think we have all the pieces in place to make the WS until: our prospects can prove themselves at the big league level; high leverage pitchers are available; most importantly, the front office shows its commitment. We’re still building & it looks to me like ‘25 will be more a step forward than the final dynastic team like we’ve seen in the Braves & Astros. Is patience a virtue? Only as long as we keep competing & winning & have the WS within the next few years.

I'm also in favor of bringing Connor Wong in 2025 ... Craig Breslow likely will not be able to significantly upgrade the position for the short term ... Wong has decent speed for a catcher and runs the bases well ... He makes fairly good contact (Strikeout Pct. 23.4%) while hitting .280 with a respectable .758 OPS in
2024 ... He has adequate versatility to fill in at first as well as second base occasionally giving Triston Casas a day off from having to face a few tough starting left handers ... Though Wong needs improvement in blocking pitches (WP 37, PB 3), he excuses that deficiency in my opinion by having thrown out 21% of his opponent's base stealers this past season ... He alsoI wholeheartedly agree that Connor Wong is a good insurance policy allowing Kyle Teel to better slowly transition into MLB in 2025 ... Having already played four seasons with the organization, his familiarity with the pitching staff should not be overlooked or discounted ...

With everyone always saying Wong’s defense is terrible, I feel that’s pretty laughable. Certain parts of his defense are below average…sure…but to say he’s one of the worst defense catchers in baseball is ridiculous. Before the All-Star break, he was looking to be an All-star, even with all the pass balls, due to his upside of throwing guys out and making a few plays in front of the plate that only maybe a few in all of baseball could possibly make. I’m sure you know the specific play I’m talking about Corbin.

I like the idea of holding onto him till the trade deadline. If he can get a first class pitcher. I would trade now. I think Teale is ready but a little extra time will not hurt. With Yosida injured. I may just add some pitching and a back up catcher and Go with what the red sox have. Wong is a liability behind the plate. They have Gasper who hit quite well in AAA.But could not hit in the majors. Wong is right handed an Teale is left handed. So that would help with match ups. If the Sox were to get someone else, they should go right handed bat.
I personally think the Red Sox will do less than everyone expects because Masa got hurt and needs to be moved And you have all these players in AAA ready to come up. Do not forget Chase Meidroth So the Sox can afford to sit back and see who takes a step forward.

Yeah I like Gasper the person but realistically he shouldn’t be included in catching plans. They didn’t even love the glove in AAA enough to have him be a regular catcher

@@redseatradio As much as I think they should sell high on Wong, I think they will keep him. The next viable catcher is in A ball and was hurt since June.
I think if they could get a better defensive catcher, it would also help the pitching staff This may let starters go deeper into the games and spare the bullpen. Could this be part of the late season meltdown?
