Sir, I am a final year student at IIT Kharagpur, you are absolutely right and it is great that you are sharing this knowledge with everyone, there is too much craze about IIT in India, IIT is not the end of life, in fact nowhere near, it is just for giving a platform to students, but it can be achieved anyways by working hard. So anyone reading this, don't be disheartened if you didn't get into IIT, in life, there is not just a single shot of success but multiple shots of success.
I resonate very deeply with what you have to say in this video, Dr. Sambhara. I've come from a non-IIT, private institution, and now, during PhD, I am rubbing shoulders with students from IISc, IIT, NIT, and other prestigious institutions. I would love to share the tale of my journey with you, if at all possible.
I was always interested in physics told my father about my interest in physics when I was in 9th He said " Ok fine you will have to crack IIT JEE to excel in physics" , I never liked the environment in coaching where everyone was so keen on solving a question as fast as possibl, I hated chemistry and after all this here I have failed to get IIT JEE , is low on self-esteem and Now force into field on CSE even though M interested in physics .
Really thought-provoking video. I'll be appearing GATE-21 for CS branch. Target is to get into IIT but if I don't end up there I'll eventually plan my way to Silicon Valley, SF somehow. Attaining short-term goals are great but we shouldn't let go of the bigger picture if one route gets blocked.
The UG in IITs are well capable of doing research. They have to take a job due to their financial condition. Almost no UG in IIT go to research. The PhDs in IIT are mainly those who are unsuccessful in their career and thus have no option. That's why the research in IIT is not great.
My friend is doing phD in chemistry in organic field and he was always exceptional both academics and even when he was working before joining PhD. If you are unsuccessful you will never be able to make it to research field neither IIT would select you. And honestly I feel most UGs are from coaching and are incapable of thought experiments which I also noticed during my time in JU.
I totally agree with you. From my own experience I can tell you most of my peers were interested in placements. In my batch only I was interested in research.
Exactly Sir...... You are Cristal clear in your opinion....I liked it. Actually, I'm studying in IIT KHARAGPUR for Master in Physics. After your all videos n openions and suggestions, i desired to do my PhD in USA. please help later one year. Go ahead.
Most people here wont understand the importance and value of research until they themselves do it. Research is such a big deal and you grow out of it. You understand it only once you do it
Sir, all the points that you mentioned are true for other colleges as well. It's always important to have a passion and pursue it irrespective of which college you are in. In general - what I have found is that, IITs/BITS/good NITs accelerates your career by 4-5years compared to a student who are not in these. There are exceptions everywhere. This is a general observation. * regarding the point of professors, I fully agree. But still, that's one of the best you can get in India compared to other schools. Gradually, in IITs, ex-IITians/professors who have done research abroad are being hired. So, we can only hope for the best in future. ** As you have mentioned, IITs have very low fees compared to private institutes like BITS. Again for a student from a village/who can't afford a US college, this is a platform which equalizes them with others. I had a lot of friends who belonged to this category. All in all, one should try his/her best for cracking JEE exams , ** if you don't know what your passion is **. If you already know what you want to pursue, it doesn't really matter if you focus on that rather than cracking JEE. Especially in this age of MOOC platforms like coursera, edx, even youtube, you can learn from one of the best in the world irrespective of where you are. So my advice for people who couldn't crack the JEE is 1. do not get bogged down by not cracking JEE 2. find a passion 3. pursue it like your life depends on it disclaimer: I am from an IIT.
