I totally agree with your comment. They aren't like a bunch of sissies. Can you imagine drumlines going back into the 60s acting like this. That's when we had real drummers that were real, young men. They were not jugglers they were rudimental drummers. Unlike rimshot after rimshot head-bobbing arm swelling and nothing being played.
@@americanspirit8932 While i get where you’re coming from I actually love how hype everyone in the crowd is in this video. plus i respectfully disagree and say that drum books these days are quite a bit more difficult than they were in the 1960s, and there’s nothing wrong with all of the added nuances of battery show writing such as choreography and extra rudiments and the comparative surplus of rimshots when compared to 20th-century drum books.
This has gotta be my favorite DCI video ever. One of the best drumlines in history playing some of the hardest shit in history, with a hilarious crowd to top it off
To all you you younger cats, this quality and consistentancy of cleanliness drum to drum all the way across the line is the exact same quality Star 93 had with Colin under Thom Hannum. This is why we still reference Star 93 so much til this day besides all of the visual stuff if that show. The only other line I remember coming close to that was Colin's last year at Cadets, SCV 2004
This is absolutely the best execution in the history of drum corps. They finally have the instructors they deserve who show the real potential of the bad ass Crusaders. I hope they take it all this year.
I heard them semi finals in the lot. It was really damn good, but not squeaky clean. Not star 93 clean. The low dry tuning of the snares hid a lot. But yea, easily up there with the most ridiculous books ever. They played it just about as good as humanly possible.
@@kalynbaur I still hold Phantom 2006 in the top spot. The clarity, openness, and balance of the snares was amazing and the uniformity within and between all sections was delicious.

I’ve been a professional rock & pop musician my whole adult life and the best drummers have drum line experience somewhere in their background. Doesn’t matter if they’re self taught or hold a DMA from Juilliard, whether they play soft jazz, hip hop or extreme metal, there’s something about the discipline and extreme mastery of rudiments that creates monster drummmers who stand out enough for me to mention it!
I remember Tommy Lee did that show where he went to college and he was in the band or tried out. He failed completely. I'm not an expert on drummers just was always my favorite instrument watching someone play but that show he did came to mind reading your comment.
@@daveschwartz5893 Tommy Lee is probably a self taught drummer and learned what he needed to know by playing the music he loved. That’s great and has served him well, and it’s only a drawback if he tries to get a gig playing in a style he doesn’t know well. Drum line pushes people to learn at least the basics of different styles as a cohesive unit, while listening to your band mates (the key to it all) and while multitasking. 99% of self taught players don’t have that training background unless they were or are super disciplined, and that’s rare. Example, I studied piano from 2nd grade through college and can hold down *almost* any keyboard gig. I taught myself guitar, then bass guitar in high school and have only played rock, metal & punk because that’s what I’m into. They’re both valid roads to take, but getting the discipline and experience up front almost always leads to a more varied and successful career over the long term. Committing to earn a living playing music, then finding out at age 50 you can’t play what people want is not a good place to end up. Luckily for him, Tommy Lee doesn’t need the money.
@@russell_szabadosI agree 100% and no... Tommy definitely doesn't need the money. Lol. But he was pretty humble on the show and had a great respect for the drummers in the band. I even give him props for putting himself out there and trying.
Hmm. I don't think Neil Peart had drumline experience. The Professor could play with anyone in any style. He was still studying the drums up until shortly before his death so he might be an outlier :D
Chance is they’ll win the Sanford this year, they’ve just had some dirty runs recently. They’re playing the hardest drum book in top 5 and it’s clean most of the time, just in shows they’ve been not quite locked in.
Seeing that many people in "the zone" working simultaneously is literally awesome. I've only seen a few batteries that locked in, relaxed, and clean since the 70s.
That is incredibly synchronized. 8:59 stood out to me to the most. As each snare drummer stops playing, the snare drum sound and intensity never changes, not even when it's only 1 snare drummer left. If I wasn't watching the video of that part I wouldn't have even known there was more than 1 drummer to begin with. That's how incredibly together everything is. Well done!
I played tenors in a drumline and to me that's one of the most awesome things someone could ever do. People don't realize the precision amd accuracy that goes into playing drums. It was one of the most rewarding times of my life amd I would encourage any child to do it.

Good job, Colin and team. Takes a lot of guts to leave all those insanely difficult parts in at the end of the season. Pretty sure this is the most difficult drum book I’ve ever seen, and that doesn’t take the drill into consideration either.
Old guy here. Why are they not #1 in drum score? In olden times 20 pts execution and 10 drum GE. Is that still true? How do they do in each.? Are they doing such difficult stuff that it is hard to clean it up? IMO they are awesome.
Genuinely couldn’t tell you, I marched a year ago and this is the best drum line I have heard imo I don’t know how they aren’t getting first, I want what the percussion judge is having
Yeah I mean the score also includes front ensemble - don't get me wrong though, BAC's front is AWESOME, definitely the strongest they've had the last few years. But SCV's front is just a whole different level from the other groups, the writing is so so good and they play incredibly. I think Crusaders could win drums this year, but it will take a perfect finals run.
Also Jeff Ausdemore was the judge for that comp and he’s kinda a simp for Bluecoats which is why they also scored amazingly compared to past performances, but by finals things should be in the right place.
The front ensemble didn’t compete nearly as much as the drum line did. Now did I think our front did so poorly to give total percussion to 3-5 levels? No… some of the judges we had were on some wild shit
