Just seen this for the first time and it’s made my day , I never thought there would be footage of the concert . I was in my teens falting in Sydney with my pals , we were Mods in a Surfies town and were heavily into music and wouldn’t missed this for the world. I’ve always said it was the best concert/festival I’d ever been to and Free were amazing, as all the acts were , even the Goldern Boy of Aussie pop Johnny Farnham was good that day . I was in the stand and it was shaking with the music and fans jumping up and down , fantastic viewing point. A brilliant day all round , thank you Facebook.
I was at the second Melb show. Imagine going from that tinny 60s guitar sound so many Oz bands had then to seeing Blackmore in full flight. Everyone, including me, was stunned.
I was there that day. Didnt pay, not sure how I got in but I did. First concert after The Beatles, The Who from the Stadium days. This was the first open air concert I atteded. Great times! Great music!
Sorry Phil but the price was $3, I've still got the yellow printed ticket unless you got a better deal. The year after Zeppelin played the Sydney showground and we paid an outrageous $4 from memory.
I was at the Adelaide concert in South Australia, at Apollo Stadium and Mick Rogers formally of Aussie bands, The Playboys, Procession and Bulldog had joined Manfred Mann about 1 year before on guitar and vocals and he did very well. Free were the band of the moment and Deep Purple also played well, just went on a bit long with solo's
This was promoted as the first international blues/rock concert. The date was 9th May 1971. It must have been a hot day if Blackmore was wearing a vest (a black vest .... of course). A hot day with hot bands. Wonderful.
I was there that day. Actually I don't think I was too far from where the camera is. I recall Paul Rodgers belting out ' Alright Now' and Ian Gillen introducing 'Black Night'. He said they thought it was 'long enough and good enough' to be released as a single. I saw a lot of great bands but this was my first. Yes I remember. It's funny. I seem to do a lot of that these days.
I missed the 71 purple gig, which i kick myself for.I wasn't gonna do it a second time,mk 2 came back to Adelaide in 84,i grabbed tickets as soon as they came on sale.Wow,they kicked serious butt.Unfucking real.
Did you also play free at Hyde Park in the heart of Sydney during that tour? I was 16 and my mother let me go - this was my first ever concert. You had Manfred Mann with you then too. Would love confirmation so I know my memory is still ... well, alive.
Deep Purple best band ever for me but i never understood why they had a pot of great songs in fireball 1971, songs like no no no, fools, demon's eye, no one came, i'm alone... Never played or rarely live.. instead they played anyone's daughter (weak song for me) or singles like strange kind of woman every show... I can't understand why they were so repetitive, the good thing was they played fireball live often, because live is fucking amazing
@J P There are photos of Free from the concert showing professional filming going on. Check link below: images.app.goo.gl/T5EMbrNvrwvULSnQ9 Last gig Free played before breaking up - and breaking Paul Kossoff. :-(
I was there, incredible
😎
Lucky man, indeed. Cheers 🍻

Was there but I can't remember? May isn't that hot (Autumn) in Sydney but it certainly wasn't raining or cold. 🌞😍
@@KevinHallSurfing it was a hot day and Ritchie wore a black singlet

And horse races!
I was there, $3 to get in, 35,000 people. Didn't appreciate the depth of talent I was witnessing
