Just saw this again for the first time in about 60 years. I love this movie and its music. I almost can’t decide which song is the best, but I think it’s this one. What a thrill to see this again.
This sounds a little bit strange, but when Gulliver puts his pipe away, I love that he actually pats it empty, then goes to the trouble of tucking it into his belt where it can still be seen afterwards. He doesn't just magically get rid of it or just slide it out of sight. The scene in general is a really beautiful one, but when I notice little details like that, I can really appreciate the work and attention to detail that went into making this.
The waves, the colors, expressions, and detail... I love it all. As a kid, I only noticed that Gulliver looks like a real human, but all the Lilliputians were very cartoonish.
Its crazy how when I was little I hated this part of the movie because I thought it was boring but now that Im an adult I think it looks and sounds so beautiful. Now I appreciate the animation and beautiful music.
I watched this movie when I was little. I was literally reminded of this song in a dream and woke up with teary eyes, immediately grabbing my phone to search it up again.
I love the way he raises himself to sing ..it is as if the dream is lifting him upwards, the rhythm of the opening lyrics in sync with the waves is wonderful and the tone in his voice is captivating.....I watched this recently with my 6-year-old and I'm happy to say we both got tremendous Joy from it...
If anyone asks why Walt Disney and the Fleicsher Brothers were rivals, just show them this movie, or just this clip and that's all the answers needed. It's no wonder. The animation and rotoscope in this movie was just beyond amazing!
Whenever I hear this I think of my grandfather. He loved this movie and use to watch it with me when I was little. It always makes me emotional/nostalgic
Still my all time favorite animated film, loved it since childhood, wish folks would drift away from the Snow White comparisons and the negatives of the film and discuss its may, MANY positives. This scene has always been a highlight for me since I first saw this snippet on an old public access channel entitled ARTS, I just had to see the rest and I fell in love with it. Its also a very harmless film, with a good message and its not overtly violent like The Incredibles is. How we got from a masterwork like this to piece of trash like that is beyond me, "progress"?
Love this song. We saw it every holiday (can’t remember whether it was Thanksgiving or Christmas) on WPIX TV from New York. The song has been in my heart since then. I only just realized there’s only a short clip because it was a big hit that year (Vera Ellen sang it) so everyone already knew it. CS Lewis said the fact that no one is satisfied with this world shows there’s a better one to come with JESUS. This song expresses that longing for a better Home.
Me to ..... i was like 3 or 4 years old. It was at the theatre Back in the late 80s ,we were ha ingresado a war in Nicaragua fo those years . Beautifull memories of my Mom and Dad
Oh this brings back such wonderful childhood memories when we were all together, sitting around the television watching this on, “Family Classics,” (on WGN-Channel 9, in Chicago), on Sunday evenings! This actually brought tears to my eyes!! Thanks for posting.
Just seeing this again brought tears to my eyes. It was movies like these that were my safe space when I was a kid. This movie along with Disney, Shirley Temple, Jim Henson’s The Labyrinth and Milo and Otis. It was these types of movies that bring to the place of simpler times. For all you little ones out there, enjoy your childhood. No matter what. Even it’s through these little things. Because one day you’re going to be a grown up, and realized you wish to go back…
My Father introduced this wonderful film to me & my brothers when we we're children. Fast forward to 2022 when my 9 year old Son, Father and myself watched this scene..my Father had to hold back his tears thinking of the heartbreak of loosing his Son 💔
I remember this from a tape my grandmother taped one Christmas... must've been at least 25 years ago now. To this day, this movie reminds me of her. Though it's never quite the same without the station ID from the start.
There are many who are credited with the songs in 1939's Gulliver's Travels...what I want to know is who sung this particular piece in the movie, and why none of the songs are on soundtrack cd or itunes?:(
His voice was awesome!:) I love this song, having heard it since childhood.I just wished we had a soundtrack for this movie. Thanks for that bit of info!:)
Also of interest is that virtually is Sam Parker you are seeing also. The Gulliver animation was created by tracing over a live actor, and Sam Parker played him physically as well. I Hear A Dream was my grandad's favourite too, always reminds me of him. Wish they'd do a good DVD of this in the UK, my old early 80s VHS copy from the BBC is still the best transfer I can find! Some versions don't have the scene with the townsfolk on his chest too!
We really had a beautiful childhood! Too bad for the kids today, because they are pushed in a wrong direction with the violent cartoons.. We are blessed to have experienced such a beautiful and pure childhood! ❤️
@@steamboatwill3.367 You're comparing classic "violent cartoons" with today's "violent cartoons"?!? Hmmm, let me guess: Tom and Jerry scared you as a child because they used TNT almost every time?!? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I migth be crazy, but this song's melody sounds to me almost the same as that 'civil war soldier's song' played in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, during the Tuco's torturing scene....I'm not kiding...! 😲
I sang this to my father just before he died. It was one one of his favorite songs.
😢😢😢😢 I'm sure he's in a happy place. May his souls continue to rest in peace. Amen
Many condolences
My condolences.
You’re a godsend for doing such an act of love for your dear father.

Golden-Age Disney all the way
Even though this isn't a Disney film. This was made by Paramount. Some of the animators who worked on Snow White for Disney also worked on this movie.
-and even voice-artists like Pinto Colvig!(Goofy and Grumpy for Disney,Gabby and Jeepers Creepers for Fleischer.)
Maybe its because its rotoscoped animation so the reason it has continuity is that he actually has the pipe on his person ?

Man, it always amazes me how they manage to make things seem real when drawn by hand. Talk about priceless.
It's just rotoscoping, they drew over the live recording of an actor.
Absolutely beautiful harmonies
its from 1939, this scene is just magic to me. it is moving art.
I think I had a crush on Gulliver as a child. Just can't remember how old I was when I saw it in VHS.
I have it on DVD!
EVEN ME!!!! His voice
I still have a crush on him. He’s the perfect man.
A nostalgic tale told in one and a half minute!

A way to keep him and your childhood close.

i still love this movie. makes me thinks about the first time i saw. that was 53 years ago. lovely song.

How does this compare to the violent nature of the Incredibles?

A bold interpretation!
(And I mean that in a positive way)
First song I ever heard.

I was born in 1995 but I had a VCD of Gulliver's Travels. This song randomly pops up on my head today. Reminds me of good times.
This is such a beautiful song

A sweet little song from a classic cartoon when times were simple and when the world was a lot younger.
Ah yes...
The glory days!
Back when times were indeed simple yet at the same time that was what made them so endearing!
Gulliver is a great baritone! :D
I remember watching this when I was young and through my life I continue to sing these few cords .. Come Home !!
I love this movie, and have it on DVD, but was delighted to find it on EPIX today! Still makes me cry after all these years.
A beautiful song. It make me sing with him
I sang this to my father before he died.
It was one of his favorites

Why can't I get this movie on DVD in Sweden...it's such a masterpiece.
It is out of copyright. Find it free on RUclips, rip it, and then you can either watch from disk or burn a dvd of your own.
A beautiful song!!!
If you like this, you should check out Vera Lynn's version. Both beautiful!!
Beautiful
JesusChrist!! Nostalgia! Beauty! Tenderness! A strong power romantically tamed to give birth to the most sublime poetry
Sam Parker was a voice actor of Lemuel Gulliver! This song of I Hear a Dream from Gulliver’s Travels 1939
He also modeled for Gulliver as well.
EPIC!!!!!

+sweetvioletstar Gulliver was voiced by a radio actor called Sam Parker, who unfortunately has little other screen credits than this...
