    I was 7 years old when this was released and I remember the “Batmania”. My mum helped me make a scrapbook of Batman articles and magazine pictures. I remember watching it over and on VHS when it came out. Batman ‘89 is my “Star Wars”.

    As a 40 year old, this has always been 'my Batman'. Just like people of certain generations will pick which James Bond is 'their' James Bond.
    You also have to remember, aside from Superman? This was IT. There was no other superhero films. This WAS the dark, gritty superhero universe.

    Batman holds a special place in my heart. I love the atmosphere, gothic architecture, film noir lighting, smoky cinematography (but not like Superman: The Movie), Danny Elfman soundtrack and the black suit is all classic.
    What does bug me is mostly the marketing and hype that surrounded the film, being a huge franchise and selling merch seemed to be the only thing Hollywood remembered it for, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the documentary included in the Blu-ray:
    THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN BLOCKBUSTER - Discover how the film’s phenomenal marketing, extensive merchandising and franchise foresight set the template for the next 25 years of tentpole pictures.

    I found an interesting article online some years ago. It was with Tom Manckiweiz (misspelled) who did Superman 1 and 2 with Donner. He wrote a script for a Batman film with Warner Bros. He had written Penguin into the script with Peter O'Toole in mind for the part. He was to be more of a gangster than a short penguin looking person with an umbrella. I think Joker was also written in the script. It had Gordon in it and was very much like Superman the movie in terms of scope but he was very clear that he couldn't write it in the same way . He understood then about keeping Batman in the shadows and less humourous as Superman. I think it would've been set in the same universe.

    This film was still massive when I was growing up in the early 2000's as it and Returns were the only 'serious' live action Batman films when by now there are several. I watched 89 again recently and it didn't hold up that well although I still think it's better than returns [mainly as 89 is a rare Batman film with only one villain] but I enjoy Nolan's take a lot more than Burton's as I've got older.

    Speaking of Jon Peters, check out the opening of his Wikipedia entry: "John H. Peters is an American film producer and former hairdresser. He's known for his executive decisions on Wild Wild West to have been the main driver of the film's commercial and creative failures. Peters was banned from the set of Man of Steel (film) by Christopher Nolan. Peters was determined, by the Producers Guild of America, to not be eligible for producer credits on A Star Is Born (2018 film), despite claims by Peters. Peter's has also been involved in numerous Sexual harassment incidents, with Jezebel recording at least five known suits against him.".

    Someone below will say, this is the best Batman movie........they are wrong. But I guess it does have its moments, and the s ofe and production design are all great, and I loved it the summer it came out. Edit, that's not Bob Kane who does the sketch, it's just an actor. Jack Napier = Jackanapes. If you imagine that this film is all a nightmare experienced by Christian Bale's Batman induced by Scarecrows fear gas (exaggerated gangsters and Gotham City etc) it works a lot better.

    Speaking of Michael Douglas, I watched Behind the Candelabra the other day and I thought it would make for a plausible, if tremendously goofy, Joker origin story. Just imagine this as Joker's monologue from The Dark Knight:
    "You look nervous, is it the scars? You wanna know how I got 'em. So, I had a significant other, beautiful like you, who tells me I worry too much, who says I oughta smile more. But he was a big shot piano player who was afraid of aging and got in deep with the plastic surgery sharks. They de-aged his face. He had more money for surgeries and wanted me to have it done. He was so upset when I didn't want to. But ... I just wanted to see him smile again, I just wanted him to know that I didn't care if I had to get horrendous amounts of plastic surgery just to make him happy. So I got it done and got hooked on painkillers. And you know what, he can't stand the sight of me. He casts me out, like a leper. But now I see the funny side, now I'm always smiling ... And where else do ya think I got these suits. You oughta know, Liberace bought 'em."

  • @arap8217
    @arap8217 4 года назад +1

    I know I'm in the minority, but Superman in Superman 2 came off as more of a psycho when killing the now powerless Zod in cold blood, first crushing his hand, then throwing him down the cliff (Donner cut "fix" came much later, so I don't count that), all done with a wink and a smile. Chris Reeve sells it well, but still. Not to mention everyone screaming against Clark impaling the truck in MOS, but conveniently forgetting II when he's going back to the truck-stop diner for petty payback, once again vs a powerless guy who first beat him fair and square.

    • @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
      @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 3 года назад

      Exactly, plus impaling the truck is an act of frustration after decades of walking around with unstoppable power while there's evils and tragedies all around.
      Although, it wasn't exactly fair and square in Superman II, that trucker fought as dirty as he could.

    I still have a strong fondness for this movie but it is mostly rose tinted, it's definitely not the best Batman movie. Watching it again recently it was not as good an experience as watching for the first time in 89 that's for sure. However besides it's flaws I still prefer this to Returns which seems to surprise a lot of people. I've never liked Returns, even when it first came out I didn't like it, apart from Pfieffer's Catwomen, I really dislike that movie. I would love you guys to do a commentary on Returns to hear your views on it.

    I love this film; it switches between this and Batman Begins as my favorite Batman movie. The Napier Joker is actually my personal favorite; I love how the monster is simmering beneath this vain, pretty boy gangster. He’s being held down by some old school Mob decorum, but when he hits the chemicals he finally sets himself free. You can even see the touches of that Joker madness behind the young Napier’s (fucking terrifying) eyes. I’m not quite sure where Duncan is getting the Grissom-copying from - outside of Joker mocking his speech patterns with the “number one guy” line, I don’t see it. I chock it up to Nicholson and Palance just having similar mannerisms to begin with. I also don’t subscribe to the notion that Nicholson is just being Nicholson. This is a level we had never seen from him outside of Jack Torrance. The bigness and majesty of the movie always hooks me. It feels out of time and gothic. I also never saw this as a revenge mission. Batman was going after the Joker well before he realized who he was; and while I prefer the Waynes death to be a result of chaotic evil, I do love the idea of Batman and Joker being tethered together by fate. In every universe. I also consider the Waynes death scene in this to be the most visually striking and haunting portrayal. It comes off as a distant dark memory that plays out in a muffled, cold nightmare in Bruce’s head. Overall I think the film is great.

    Batman Begins, Dark Knight and majority or the DCAU, including the animated series were in my opinion the best adaptation of the come book vigilante.
    Burton’s version always had that dated look to it, & out of step with the Batman comics that were being published at the time.
    I did prefer Batman & Robin over the Burton films, as I saw it as a homage to the 1960s version.
