    I enjoyed this movie very much. For me Batman and Robin is still the best bat film. Nobody has captured the gritty tone the way Schumacher has and cloony is just so intense.

    There was a lot to this movie that I liked and for about the first hour and a half I was pretty much fully onboard but I felt it could’ve definitely benefited from being drastically streamlined. Once it got to the climax it definitely felt like the filmmakers suddenly remembered they were making a big budget superhero movie so felt obligated to crowbar in a big budget Superhero finale with bombs going off and the whole city getting flooded.
    I actually felt the movie worked best when it was heavily leaning on the whole Se7en/Zodiac vibe and highlighting Batman as a detective, and overall I enjoyed it but there were so many moments throughout the film where certain things just _happen_ that end up having no consequences. Such as the DA’s bomb going off right in Batman’s face and it ultimately having no effect other than knocking him unconscious for a little while. Yeah okay, you can argue that his suit helped shield him, fine, but then straight after he escapes from the police station and uses his wing suit and they deliberately have him crash in a really painful and damaging way, only to then immediately cut to the next scene where he’s meeting Gordon again on top of the building and he’s perfectly fine. Why show him crashing in such a messed up way if you’re not going to actually do anything with that?
    And then, at the end of the movie they have one of the Riddler’s men shoot the new mayor… but she doesn’t die. Batman shows up seconds later anyway so why not have him prevent her from getting shot rather than make the villains look ineffective by letting them shoot her and it ultimately not mattering.
    Also, why not just have Alfred die? I thought Andy Serkis was fine in the limited screen time he actually had but again, having a bomb go off in his face and then he's basically fine just makes the stakes feel low and that nothing _really_ matters in this supposedly gritty and realistic take on the Batman.

It's still pretty great, and my favorite of the trilogy, but everyone knows the best Batman _film_ is Mask of the Phantasm.

    Seen it twice, and enjoyed it both times. I think it’s a good movie, but not a great one, it was missing something, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on what exactly that was (both times). When we compare this movie to most films currently coming out of the Hollywood conveyor belt then it’s a really good movie. If you compare it to other Batman interpretations on film then it’s again very good, but not quite top tier in my opinion.
    This was a decent review though, and understand the criticism, but ALL movies even from the rose tinted 80’s blockbuster era have loads of plot holes, exposition and/or pacing issues. Nolan’s Batman films were littered with them. I suppose if you come out not liking it you will rip the film apart (to levels that are probably unfair) against if you enjoy it you will be far more forgiving.
    Things I liked - Batman playing detective (bit inconsistent at times though) the look and feel of the movie (including Gotham generally). Penguin, Gordon, Selina, actually casting in general. The score was really strong and different. The Batman and The Batmobile’s intro’s were excellent (everyone wants to see a cool Batmobile). First 2 thirds where strong generally. Alfred was good (underused)
    Not so good - Portrayal of BW, I get what they were doing, and I am sure in future instalments he will become more ‘Bruce Wayney’ due to where is characters arc is in this film. Pacing at times poor, too long (last 60mins were not needed and were poorly conceived). Riddler started strong and lost his way. Batman always moving so slowly got tiresome (really picky criticism). Intro of Joker was a eye rolling moment.
    Solid 7/10 , initially I was a 8/10….

    It's not a good movie with several great scenes and good acting. I was torn because there was plenty to like, but it didn't flow and was too long. I am one who thinks in many ways The Dark Knight Rises is the best Nolan Batman film though there are issues with how it flows. There wasn't enough Riddler, but he was amazing when he was onscreen. However, I was hoping he would be more Stoic and in control of his emotions. Also, I'm not sure this film showed the genius of Riddler and the Penguin was nothing like the Penguin. Like I said, I like Nolan's Bane and all his versions of villains, which is very different from the comics and shows. But, the Penguin needed to be more like the Penguin. I'm not looking for webbed feet or anything like that. Just more Penguin. The Batmobile chase was the best Batmobile scenes ever though.

    See for me that part of the plot about Thomas Wayne was not that interesting simply because the batman telltale games did that first and they went all in in it, not just "maybe he was connected to falcone" and back then it was an interesting take to me.
    And yeah I agree with the guys here about the flying rotten, the bat is the first thing that comes into your mind, especially for somebody who is into batman lore

  • @MsTJ10

    Bet no one expected this film to be mentioned: the script really made me think of 2016’s Ghostbusters in the way that they just did not know when to end a line or cut a line for sake of subtlety. The script to me just comprised of people giving perfunctory descriptions of things we as the audience could see for ourselves and these descriptions were phrased in a way that we’d get the same amount of pleasure from just reading them from the script which is not how scripts work. I honestly expected every scene to just start with someone saying “it’s raining”. Also as much as I appreciate the detective angle, a good detective story should not have the spectator in step with the detective, as in we know exactly what they know and it seems their guess always will be as good as our own, it’s even worse when we’re a few steps ahead of the detective, so much for Batman being the worlds greatest detective

    It has a lot of flaws. And I wouldn't say it's one of the best movies ever (which I would consider The Dark Knight to be), but I genuinely thought this was the best live action Batman movie. Just as a Batman film, yes, I thought it managed to be a better one than even TDK. This is exactly the Gotham, exactly the tone I always wanted from a live action Batman movie. I agree that the last act was by far the weakest. And maybe it would've been a better film overall, if it ended after Falcone's death.

    I agree that Bruce Wayne doesn't feature much. There's a heck of a lot of Batman, and in previous films people have complained about a lack of Batman.
    There is one scene where he walks around without a shirt and of course he doesn't have the pumped physique of recent heroes. But of course Keaton wasn't big either.
    Regarding the Joker, we really didn't need to be introduced to yet another version of that character (yet).
    Lastly, I too thought of 'bat' straight away with the flying rodent clue thing and was surprised the characters didn't.

    • @MrHEC381991
      @MrHEC381991 2 года назад

      I honestly thought Alfred said "stool pigeon" just to throw Bruce off the idea that Thomas Wayne was connected to all of it which in turn made me think that's how Riddler knew Bruce was Batman. THAT would've been more interesting. But no it turns out they had a brain fart. If you asked 10 people what a "flying rat/rodent" was, they'd all say "bat". But yeah, they had that Joker scene for sequel bait -_-

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Год назад

      Yeah, I'd rather the 'Joker' was given a rest in the Patterson series [particularly as the Joaquin Phoenix film is getting a sequel]. Batman has such a great 'rouges gallery' and it's better to given some of the others the spotlight [The Riddler and Penguin were good choices for this as they didn't feature in Nolan's series].

      See, I'm much the same. I enjoyed it fine too, but it's not like it's a game changer or anything. I completely get what Duncan and Richard are saying in terms of what issues they had with it (And it did have issues here and there) but I REALLY don't get the backlash of people treating this like the second coming of Jesus ("QUICK! Everybody look busy!") And then getting angry that people don't see it as the greatest work of art of all time. It's just a film. It's there to enjoy.... With a delicious pack of Oreos at your local Café Nero.
      Still, I absolutely love the visual puns of the film. That it ends in a LITERAL crime wave thanks to RiddlerAnon. It's like how the Dark Knight Rises ends with a reference to Adam Wests Batman. "SOME days you just can't get rid of a bomb!"
      Also, I bloody KNEW watching this thing that Duncan would be the first to point out the symbolism. I KNEW it! Second Batman falls into the water I was like "... My Duncan Casey senses are tingling".

    PROS

    + acting great across the board
    + atmospheric, dark and brooding
    + exciting action set pieces
    + Dano is creepy (he's also great in this film ha ha ha) but could have dialled it back in places

    CONS
    - meanders between plot lines and feels like a seasons worth of stuff crammed into a standalone film
    - Catwomans parentage is kinda an unnecessary twist
    - Alfred is underused and his relationship with Bruce doesn't have much chemistry
    - lacks an emotional core
    - Bruce needs to develop more in the sequel, because he's very much a blank slate in this

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 2 года назад

      Agree with all you positives.
      I would disagree on the Catwoman's parentage isn't necessary. It ties into the 'Sins of the father' idea and Catwoman's story being parallel to Batman's where they reach different conclusions [as shown by the very ending].
      I wonder if the lack of 'Bruce' is to try and differentiate this from Nolan's trilogy where his Batman persona was absent from large portions of Begins [as it's an origin story] and Rises rather than a disinterest in him [which Batman Returns suffers from] but I agree they need to beef up his character in the sequel.
