A carb rebuild is a simple fix. The needle valve is sticking open and flooding you out.

Thank you Al for hangin out with Buckin. Look forward to you guys finding the issue. Had a couple issues similar to this with my 78 Ford. One ended up being the pickup coil in the distributer and the other was the shear pin on the gear of the distributer let loose. Love ya Buckin. 🌲❤🌲👊🪓

Pull the number 1 plug completely out put your thumb over empty hole and as you bump it over you will feel the compression blow on your thumb. Two revolutions you could feel the same thing, that's called 180 out of time. It may look like you are on #1 fire position but in actuality you could be 180 off thous no fire try that.

To check the timing chain, take the distributor cap off so you can watch the rotor. Put a socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt and rock the crankshaft back and forth while watching the rotor. There should be very little movement of the crankshaft, in both directions, before the rotor starts to move. Good luck Buckin!

Runs until things get warmed up, then quits, classic bad coil symptom. Those hall effect switches in the distributors take a certain kind of coil, or they burn up as well. If the float is sticking on the carb, give the bowl a little tappy tap tap with a hammer. 9/10 times it'll unstick the needle. Also, have Al show you to use a vacuum gauge. Old school way of checking an engine out.

Some times a pin in the gear on the distributor will sheer. Causing the timing to be off . The cam gear is got a fiber gear that can go bad and your timing can jump back and forth
Allowing you to have an intermittent timing problem . If you are flooding the needle in the carb is not shutting off the fuel to your bowl .some times if your float is bad or it's sunk it will flood .pull the carb and take the top off the carb and check for loose needle seat or trash in the carb ... Change all your plugs they are gas soaked .

12 degrees btdc is where you need to be for that year 460. Can go a few more degrees advance to get a better burn for E 10 fuel. Those came from factory with a nylon cam gear that is prone to breaking.

Had ford's all my life a whole 30 years of being around them. First thing I know that happened to my 460 when replacing the carb was to much fuel pressure. If running a electric fuel pump it needs to be before the fuel pump so it can act as a pressure regulator. Probably the spoiler comment right here. Good luck Buckin'.

Hey buckin a more accurate way of testing the piston is tdc is put a screwdriver down the hole turn it over by hand with the fan or ratchet on the pulley screw driver will go up hit tdc then start going down again . Flooding issue is most likely the float sticking.old fuel will varnish it all up being stood.give it a good clean out with some carb spray cleaner . Take all the plugs out clean them to before you try it again .good luck pal 👍

The timing chain wouldn't jump a tooth. When dropping the distributor u gotta line the oil pump rod .. into the bottom of the distributor.
Line it top dead center.. apply pressure down on the distributor while jumping or bumping the relay... it will drop all the way.. bring it back up to tpc... see if the rotor is pointing to #1 position.. if so ur good.. if not ur off a tooth.. do it all over again
20 mins I cud have it running

  • @waynetharp
    @waynetharp 2 года назад +2

My guess is the distributor shaft coming out of engine has broken or was lifted when the cap was replaced and put back in out of time. I can't see this truck having enough miles to wear out a timing chain to the point it jumps time.

It's got to be the carburetor Billy. At that's what my mind is telling me. Heck, pull the carb off, turn it over till you can see the intake is dry on the inside. Remove the plugs, clean them. Then spray 2 cycle gas in the intake where the carb goes. Use something along the lines of a windex bottle to spray it. You're basically creating your own fuel air mixture with the bottle. I'd be willing to bet she'd fire right up. The only thing that would prevent it would be incorrect timing, or a massive vacuum leak somewhere around the intake. Good luck buddy.

You have gas soaked plugs..... Change your plugs ....your carb needs rebuilt because your float is sunk or needle and seat in bowl has trash under it not letting it seal off .your timing is good.also keep in mind that you and the other guy made it run.... porcelain on your plugs get soaked and it shorts out killing your fire at the plugs .

Flooding is needle and seat issues, or float sticking! I would clean the carb. And you can bump the starter with a simple piece of wire or a fork right at the solenoid from Bat+ to start terminal.
Disconnect the fuel line, and blow off the spark plugs, then try starting it with a little either, or a “spray of gas” not a squirt, if it fires off, then the issue is in the carb.

Um its been a while since ive worked on a distributor set up..but to be a chain issue means it wasnt put in time to begin with cus unless the chain is old and stretched or a tooth on the cam or crank is broken it cant jump time . The most common issues is the distributor being off a tooth cus they are a pain to set on some engines.
