actually that would not be that unbelievable. troops stationed at the great wall were mainly guys living nearby. so guys at the wall that know what to do in the situation depicted would be very rare. because guys that know, would stay home providing for the village by fishing and if the province conscript for wall or war, the mayor would rather conscript another farmer than the villages only few river/lake fishermen. An adventurer from europe that traveled all the way to china on the other hand in the medieval time definitely knows how to fish or he would lack a trait to make it more realistic to survive the journey.
