What, no it's not. A bow is much more agile and he's trained with a bow, not a crossbow. Makes a lotta sense, it's actually quite intuitive.

I'm not familiar with the drawstrength of a chu-ko-nu like this, but with a european crossbow, it would be a terrible idea to do this. Crossbows had very short arms but a far heavier drawweight to compensate for the shorter distance it accelerates the arrow. A heavy warbow could weigh up to 150 pound. 200 pound is simply way to heavy. Crossbows could have a drawweight of upt to 1000 pounds.
And a bow is not more agile, quite the opposite. At least, if with an effective warbow, not the 20 to 60 pound showbows they use in movies. And yes, I know Lars Andersson, but he uses a 60 to 80 pound bow most of the time, which is almost half the weight of historical warbows.
@The Little Drummer Boy In faster, do you mean arrows/bolts per minute or the velocity of the projectile?
In the first case, the reason is that the bow has a far lower drawweight. However, the bow that he broke was a chinese repeating crosbow, called a chu ko nu. These could fire as fast, if not faster than a normal bow. Up to 10 shots in 20 seconds before a reload. If you have tried normal archery, you will find it difficult to fire 5 arrows in that time.
About the velocity of the chu ko nu, I can't say much. When you compare a crosbow and normal bow with the same drawweight, the normal bow wins because of the longer drawlength. A normal bow has a drawlength of just over half your length, say a meter. So it can gain velocity over that length, and gain far more energy. The drawlength of a european crossbow is less than a third of that. However, a 1250 pound crossbow will always launch it's projectiles with a higher velocity than any normal bow could.
But the chu ko nu is probably not even close to that drawweight because it is repeating. But still, the arms are not made to fit the drawlength of an adult human. And using a bow that is to short is not good for your archery.
But before I ramble on even more, what I want to say is:
Matt Damon should not break down a crossbow to use the arms as a bow, because they aren't made for that and won't work. He should just pick up a normal bow. That is far more effective. Or use the crossbow as intended, because that is still more effective than breaking it down.
@The Little Drummer Boy repeat bow is one chinese most iconic weapons, it is one of the weapons that help qin united the whole china, because even skillless people can use it. BTW qin built the wall as well
i like how these guys are so much better at fighting those things than the people who trained probably their entire life to fight.
That's because these guys are American and are the main stars.
They took about 5 minutes to kill one out of the millions, while the archers were wiping a good portion of them out so the amount of training did pay off (unless your talking about the Crane Corps strategy).
They could have had more actual combat experience which is > training.

@Emperor the problem is the queen doesn't know it's winning. It doesn't know if there are more soldiers waiting inside the wall. That's why it decided to fall back, also it had a different plan to invade. It was already digging a tunnel underneath, she purposefully let one of its soldier get captured. That soldier then gave off a signal back to the queen giving the location of the capital. Winning with brute force isn't always the best approach, you gotta be smart too.
Mad respect to the cameraman. Able to film this whole thing and risking his/her life.

the ones up top have many arrows in them but when our hero shoots, his arrow kills them
Nothing beats a Zerg rush.
Most likely it comes down to gravity and accuracy, the archers are shooting down at them, which means the force of the arrow would be amplified by gravity. you'd also have a much easier time precisely shooting a target moving in a relatively straight line with no immediate threat to yourself than you would a close target moving sporadically which does prove to be a threat to yourself, likely causing panic.
Its actually harder to hit their eyes when they are right on top of you, people panic when their lives are at stake which makes them less accurate.
People think too hard about this movie. Give me badass monsters and I'm happy.
if they were going to do a horde of monsters vs a human army defense then they could of just went and asked GW for a license and make a Warhammer 40k movie based around the Imperial Guard fighting against a Tyrannid Hive Fleet

They're not trying to save one another, they are bringing back the corpses to feed the Queen. It also prevents humans to study them in order to be more efficient against them while battling, though this second point is pure theory from the strategist.

im gonna get so much hate for this but i really REALLY liked this movie, i found it fun to watch and was basically candy for my imagination. i did not see it in theatres but was more than happy when i got the blu ray copy of it
and i forgot to mention that i found the ending satisfying

I agree with you. This movie is like Independence Day: Yeah, the plot is a bit silly and topical. But man! What an spectacle! It is the sort of movie you enjoy because you know how it is going to end.

A thought occurs. If they don't appear for so long, you'd think they'd have time to plant traps, spears, or other such things in the valley. After all the Wall must have been built during a period of inactivity, so it's possible to an extent . I'm guessing some are still active closer to the mountain? But still
vexxama that's what I was thinking. Form several lines of defense within the valley and use the tops of the cliffs as a sort of high altitude defense station.

This is such a comfort movie of mine, ik its not the best but i cant help but love it. It just holds a soft spot in my heart. Also the soundtrack slaps hard and the monster design is sick

I like how one of them takes like a dozen arrows and two drawn out stabs to the throat to kill, and the other ones are instantly down with an arrow to a shoulder.
That wasn't its shoulder, that's where its eyes were. Remember when they were saying aim for the eyes? The eye is the weak spot but it's really small and it's where you'd think a shoulder would be. Watch it again.

If you want to forcibly comatose your brain and try to enjoy it for the effects then you can but it's hard for me to suspend disbelief to that extent. I think the blue crane corps are actually useful in two ways, first, it’s extremely evident how dangerous the creatures are in melee seeing as how even one getting on the wall killed several people and they were nowhere near stopping it, the crane corps can drive the javelins way deeper with the help of gravity, then the cranes allow them a better chance of escaping, the survival rate of the crane corps is actually way higher than those melee fighters on the wall considering it took so many just to kill one. Second, the only way the creatures can scale the wall is by stacking themselves against it, when the crane corps drops down, the creatures lunge at them and lose all their progress.
so the crane corps are literally hooked bait? got it.
@@bradley4465 more pile breakers. like shooting the bottom of a wall pile in a zombie game. Done right you stop them climbing up , done wrong, you end up in a woodchipper.
It is much *much* more effective to replace the crane corps with more archers. Leave the hanging platforms as they were and place crossbowmen in their place. Now, the crossbowmen will have direct line of sight onto any monsters that are at the base of the wall and shoot at them with impunity with little to no risk to their lives (the only risk they have apart from the odd monster getting through is that they fall off from the platform, which is where the harnesses come in handy).

Or just have huge stacks of blocks of concrete at the top of the wall, and when the monsters climb up all the way, u release a block from the stack and it just cleans the monsters right off...so many more efficient solutions to this.

I like how the first monster to jump in took a couple of arrows and spear shots for it to be taken down but then the ones that came afterwards got killed by a few arrow shot only lmao

I just realised that the reasoning for the monsters taking the corpses of their fallen, was less an act of camaraderie, but actually a more easily obtained food supply for the queen.

I feel like this movie went way out of it's way to look cool
When it comes to they Tao Tei, I feel like the designers had great ideas when designing their heads, but then ran out of ideas when it came to their bodies as well as the Queen. Granted, they couldn't give the Queen a Tyrannosaur-frame because that would be ripping off Aliens, but I do think they could have made her an immobile titan(like the size of Godzilla), just sitting inside the meteor laying eggs.
They could have had several different kinds too like the zerg where there are like huge ultralisks and swarming zerglings and ranged hydralisks and flying mutalisks and that would have made for a great foil for the chinese army and their specialized squads
And that’s the roar that the raptors did in Jurassic park
