  • This easy morning yoga routine is made up of the yoga poses I do daily. Before I even get out of bed, I do these yoga poses for energy, to feel more centered and also to help alleviate my POTS symptoms. If you’re a yoga beginner or if you live with chronic pain and chronic fatigue, this practice is for you! Starting the morning with a bit of yoga can set the tone for your entire day.

    ABOUT ME + SLEEPY SANTOSHA
Hi! My name is Rachel. I am the creator of Sleepy Santosha. I am a certified yoga instructor who specializes in yoga for chronic illness. Although I hold two teaching certifications, the classes I teach are largely inspired by my own firsthand experiences with chronic illness and my personal yoga practice.
Because I know what it is like to live with chronic illness, I am able to create yoga classes that intuitively support the needs of someone who is experiencing chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, etc. and many of my classes can be practiced in bed. If the practice in this video didn't suit your needs, be sure to check out the other yoga classes on my channel. I try to provide a variety of intensity levels.

I have Fibro and neuropathy....even these gentle poses can prove painful for me! It makes me feel angry and depressed that I can no longer do what I want and need to do.....any suggestions ? I used to do yoga years ago but had let it slide over time. Now that i want to do it I find i am so less capable!! Thanks for all you do for our RS !

Becky Kueng I can totally relate to those feelings of anger and frustration. Sometimes those feelings still come up for me. When that happens, I take a deep breath and soften. I offer my compassion to those feelings because I know I’m not feeling them for no reason. And then I choose to let them go because they do not serve me. It’s okay that I can’t do the same things today that I did five years ago. My body doesn’t need to be perfectly healthy in order to be worthy of my yoga practice. It’s so important for us to practice being present with ourselves exactly as we are in the moment.
When you practice yoga, are the poses causing additional pain for you? It’s okay for us to experience pain during our practice...especially considering that with chronic pain, we are usually experiencing some level of pain 24/7 anyway. But if the poses are making the pain worse, that’s the sign that we should stop. Are there any poses that you know feel good for you? Does adding props help? Maybe one of my supine yoga practices would feel better for you? There are so many ways for us to practice yoga. It’s not about what the poses look like. It’s about feeling good and spacious in our bodies. Give yourself permission to experiment. Even if they aren’t actual yoga poses per se. Find what feels good. You know your body better than anyone else ❤️
I’m going to link a couple videos here for you that I think might help, and I’d also encourage you to check out my membership program. Next month our theme is “working with our pain” and I think you will enjoy the classes I have planned.

Remember savasana is a yoga pose, sitting is a yoga pose, as long as you have that mind, body and breath connection then you're practicing yoga. Give your body time and the postures will come back. They may look different or there might be ones you can do but couldn't before and vice versa. It's your yoga practice. I could write a story here about my current situation, my yoga teacher has left and the girl she's passed the class onto is no good and I wish I hadn't bothered going. Now I'm in more pain today than usual but I will get back into an at home practice and I've found a class that will suit me, hopefully! Like Rachel says props are great, old pillows, cushions, blocks, straps bolsters etc really help especially if you haven't practiced in a while. Try 5 mins a day for a week then 10 the following week and build on that. I'm telling you, you will find a practice that fits you. I really wish you the best, chronic pain is really shitty!!! Keep us updated I'd really like to know how you get on. We need to create communities and support for each other, worldwide. I'm in Scotland and I love that I get to communicate with people like yourself and I love that we can help each other. I've got spinal stenosis and a plethora of other spinal problems. Anyway I've blethered enough! 😂😂😂💕💕💕

@@kirstymacfarlane1620 thank you so much for your caring and compassionate answer . Yes !!! I do feel we need to find a community of support when we are challenged by chronic pain or illness. I have little or no support from the people around me, they either just don't understand what is happening to me or they just don't care to find out. Either way I end up feeling alone and struggling to get my life back and to try to explain to them why I cannot be the person I used to be . I could go on about things that frustrate me but I will tell you that I managed to do some ( a few minutes) of this routine last night . It made me feel so proud of myself, even with the tiny bit I accomplished. I confess I did end up with some pain afterwards but I hope that will subside. Thank you again for caring and taking the time to contact me . It meant a great deal to me !! I do wish that people like you existed in my circle of " friends" , it would make like so much more rewarding! BTW- I LOVE your part of the world ! It always makes my heart ache when I see beautiful photos of Scotland! Maybe in a past life I lived there...😊 Thank you again !! Becky

@@beckykueng3017 you're so welcome Becky. Kindness costs nothing and I know how you feel about the people in your life. I have my husband and my dog, she's my world. I'm so glad you managed some of the practice. There's a book by Scott Rennie called one percent yoga, he was my first yoga teacher and basically 15 minutes is 1% of the day. That's all the time you need to spend practicing, even if that 15 minutes is 2 mins legs up the wall, 2 mins child pose, 2 mins savasana and the last 9 is sitting, on a chair or the floor, just listening to your breathing, then that's advanced yoga. This is where people get confused. Advanced yoga is about how aware you are of your body, mind and breath not about getting your legs behind your head. Yes the postures are beautiful but what are they really gaining from them? I've only had 2 yoga teachers and I've been super lucky because that's the attitude they both have taught with. When Angie my last yoga teacher hurt her back her yoga practice was sitting, with her hands in prayer posture. Then she tried child's pose, extended child's pose and she went from there. So don't worry about getting into the poses. Do a bit of Googling about the history of yoga and you'll be surprised by what you find out. I'm so glad I lifted your spirits, there's nothing nicer than when a stranger shows some compassion and makes someone feel better. Good on you girl 💕💕

Very practical (since every morning start in bed) and feels so good to begin my day with! I’m dealing with pain-issues and have once and again realized how great this kind of gentle yoga is for my body and soul. So- THANKS! Wish you the best! /Eli

This is really great. I'm still kind of new to being a spoonie, and I used to do Hatha yoga and power yoga pretty regularly before I got sick. I keep feeling like I'm not doing enough because I'm not able to do those more rigorous dynamic flows. I'm working on accepting what is, finding my new normal, and enjoying life with modifications. Thank you so much for this video! I had created a vigorous flow with sun salutations as the base, and every time I try it now, I put myself into a flare for close to a week. Thanks for a more realistic morning practice that still wakes me up and makes me feel good! Namaste! 😊🕉️

Really enjoying this video. Before my fibromyalgia started 5/6 years ago I used to do yoga 6 days a week but slowly I had to stop practicing because of the pain. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to build a practice again but either my pain or my thinking would stop me. Yoga in bed is so much more accessible to me, 1 because my symptoms are worse in the mornings, and 2 it doesn't seem like a mountain to climb, just a really positive way to get going in the morning. Thank you for taking the time to create your videos and giving people like me the chance to fall back in love with yoga. Sarah

Hi Rachel! Recently diagnosed with POTS+ITS with severe deconditioning over the last few months. I've been doing this video and your bedtime one for a couple weeks now. A month ago I could barely sit up but now I find this routine doable. I feel very accomplished and focused when I do these! Before this I was extremely active, working out 3-4x/wk (HIIT, barre, pilates) and constantly on my feet so I'm continuing to adjust/accept my new lifestyle. I admire you for all the hard work you've put into your mind and body over the years of your chronic illness.
