      it definitely does. I was using Wobbuffet and over the course of 5 turns against Growlithe it used Flamethrower only twice - on both the occasions that I selected Counter as my move. Every time I selected Mirror Coat, it used Swift. And when I got low on health and started using Destiny Bond, the computer just kept switching pokemon until I had no PP left. It was 100% reading my inputs.

    I'm pretty sure I've seen this "reading the RNG ahead of time" behavior even as recently as Sun and Moon's Battle Tree. Was using a Poison Heal Gliscor to stall out a Houndoom that knew Flamethrower and Dark Pulse. Flamethrower was the stronger move so it used Flamethrower *almost* every turn for optimal damage, but sometimes it would (sub-optimally) use Dark Pulse. Whenever it did, Dark Pulse would *always* score a flinch, like it knew ahead of time that it would flinch and thus Dark Pulse was "more optimal" than Flamethrower that turn.

  • @cherryb0ng

    For those who don't play Stadium 2 or Gold Silver or Crystal, there is a mechanic specific to generation 2 where you thaw at the very end of a turn (while it's still on the field) and not during the turn like every gen after that. What This means is that if your frozen Pokemon has enough bulk to take an attack you can switch it in later for 10% chance to heal it even though it didn't do anything that turn. This also means that it is the only generation where you have a 1% chance to thaw out on the same turn that you got frozen.

    If I’m remembering right GSC actually uses a similar system. I can’t remember exactly all it considers, but I know it does one damage roll to pick a move then another when the turn plays out.
    This means it’ll pick Quick Attack to finish off your faster Pokemon, only to leave you with a sliver on a lower damage roll. Surprisingly advanced and human-like compared to how exploitable RBY’s AI was.

    I've played this game for 20 years and the evidence to me suggests that they do NOT know secondary effect success or damage roll outcomes in advance. The AI is clearly aware of secondary effects of moves and it knows the max rolls for everything, but it doesn't know the outcomes.
    The clip you show of the Poliwhirl using its weaker Body Slam to get paralysis before switching to its stronger move. I've seen countless times the AI use Body Slam or Dragonbreath or Zap Cannon to fish for paralysis and take 3-4 times to succeed before switching to their stronger move. And that's the best play a lot of the time. The same in Stadium 1. Use Chansey against an AI Starmie with Surf and Psychic. It goes for Psychic first, fishes for a special drop, and then switches to its stronger move Surf after succeeding. It will spam Psychic multiple times until the Special drop happens. Same if you're against a Jynx with Psychic and Ice Beam and many others.
    Competitive players do the same in Gen I. They will often use Body Slam and Psychic (or even Ice Beam) to fish for their secondary effects even if they have a stronger move. Same with Scald in more modern generations. It's a shame that the one Pokemon game where they actually put a lot of effort into the AI is so shocking to people that it's suspected of just cheating. All you need to do is write a line of code something like "If strongest move is a 5HKO or more and opponent is not statused, use move with 30% paralysis chance until enemy is paralysed". It's normal AI behaviour in this game. Maybe you've been unlucky so far and they've always succeeded 1st try at the secondary effect so far (or you knocked them out before they succeeded so you didn't even know that they had a stronger move). But one day you will see them fail multiple times, then succeed on their 4th try, and switch to Earthquake or whatever and you'll be like "Oh, why didn't they use Earthquake earlier?" It's because the AI is programmed to try to paralyse you.
    The example you show of Omastar vs. frozen Venusaur. The thaw chance is very low, I would've probably gone Ancientpower in that situation too. Freezing is fairly rare, so even after 20 years I'm not 100% sure if the AI behaves differently when you're frozen, but considering the AI reacts differently when you reveal Counter/Mirror Coat (tries to use the opposite category move), when you are boosting evasion (eventually favours Swift, Faint Attack, Vital Throw, Toxic), when you are poisoned (favours Protect, Dig, etc.), when you use Destiny Bond (tries not to attack you, sometimes just switches), when your speed is lowered (favours flinching moves), when you boost your stats (favours Psych Up), when Perish Song is up (usually switches out at some point), etc. I would expect that they programmed in different AI behaviour when you're frozen too, at the very least to not use Fire-type moves!
    And as for damage rolls, I am certain the AI doesn't know damage roll outcomes in advance. I admit that they clearly do know the max damage a move can do. When you're on very low health, the AI usually goes for a weaker, more accurate, higher PP move to knock you out if it has one. Which again is a sensible play normally. But often they get a low roll and you survive with a few HP. This suggests to me that the AI KNEW the weaker move COULD knock you out based on the max roll that it knows, but it didn't know that it would low roll before choosing it. So I don't think it reads the damage rolls either. It's something I've seen happen a lot, way too much in fact. I sometimes have to bank on it to win in some fights, which I wouldn't be able to do if the AI knew the damage roll outcome in advance all the time.
    Also, another thing to add is that there's like 60 different enemy AIs in this game! So two different opponents might react quite differently in the same situation.

      In some pokemon games (stadium probably too) there is a specific AI command that read your imput and act according to that. That's why AI can use a move that it's super efective to the pokemon you just switch.

    Also your pieces are Crumpled Up Straw Wrapper, Years-Old Dry Piece of Chewed Gum, Button That Fell Off the Ref's Jacket, and Your Angry Gamer Tears, none of which have actual rules as pieces and consequently you lose before you even decide your first move.

    7:11 This makes perfect sense but now I’m even more confused by this one Stadium 2 scenario I had awhile back. The last two Pokémon were my Jolteon versus the AI’s Starmie, with both at single-digit HP. Starmie was faster and had a 100% accuracy attack it had already used once, so I figured the battle was lost, but then it used Confuse Ray instead of just going for the easy knockout, which allowed Jolteon to knock it out instead. Do some particular trainers prioritize certain moves even above knocking out an opponent? Was it a programming error, somehow? A completely uncharacteristic show of mercy..?

Idk if you could even land an advantageous match up in the 1st in line pokemon you send out at the start. It makes me so thankful that mainline pokemon games rarely allow the npc to swap. It just seems silly that they read your mind and swap a step ahead of you indefinitely.

  • @bigtimetimmyjim6486
    @bigtimetimmyjim6486 2 месяца назад +1

    The AI does NOT know the outcomes of effects. If the AI uses a move with a secondary effect over a more damaging move, it is because the AI knows your team and predicts a switch. For example, in Sabrina R1, there is a speedrun spot where we have Voltorb Explode on Mr Mime and send out Haunter to finish it off with Kadabra in back. Shadow Ball will kill Mr Mime, but the Mime has a Focus Band, which means certain death for Haunter, right? Nope! Sabrina's AI sees your Kadabra in back and has her Mr Mime use Ice Punch instead of Psychic. thinking that there is no way you would keep Haunter in against a pokemon with Psychic, and the Ice Punch has the same 10% freeze chance that one would expect it to have.
