Fun fact, in Stadium, critical hits are based on Speed still, but the formula is actually different to the handheld games so the critical hit rates are more spread out (for example, Jolteon crits slightly less often in Stadium, Snorlax crits slightly more often). Also, the teams of 3 that the enemy chooses aren't COMPLETELY random (in most battles). They're semi-random. The AI looks at your team and has some system to pick its teams based on how whether their Pokemon outspeed yours, how many hits it would take to KO each of your Pokemon, how many hits each of your Pokemon would take to KO theirs, whether your Pokemon are immune to their status moves, etc, and then chooses from the best ones. Some Pokemon will almost never get chosen, or will almost always get chosen, depending on what your team is.
How does high crit rate work btw? Is razor leaf still a special flower trick for Victreebel and Venusaur, or is now harder to guarantee the crit. PS: Forget about it. It still is a X8 multiplier, and now you need only 52 speed instead of 64.
I'm so glad you said this because when I completed both stadium games 2 years ago I could have sworn certain CPU's picked the same team depending on which team I chose. Good video still but it had me questioning myself
"Early civilizations came up with fantastical legends to explain this unlikely phenomena. Modern science puts the likelihood of this occurring at one in over 800 quintillion." *Werster clip plays*
i think if you know what's good and what's not good in gen 1 it's definitely doable without trying too hard. most mewtwo sets, if they're piloted by an AI, are hilariously easy to stall with chansey. looking it up, 2 of the 3 rental chanseys you'd end up using have rest. even though none of them have softboiled that should be plenty. also one of them has minimize which is nice to have. all the gengars and zams explode to tauros or snorlax can switch into them. the abra/kadabra psychic spam is perfectly good and those mons both also get twave most of the time
Round 2 Pika Cup(?) with the Lvl 15 only is according to the prime speedrunner of said category Werster like... 15 in difficulty on a scale of 1/10, where in his FAQ for the game he says that he doesnt' feel comfortable even with a 2hour lead going into that particular cup in round 2, it's that hard.
did you know when using your Gold/silver/crystal games with stadium 2 and if you used your pkm in the mini games it raises friendship values? (easily noticeable with eevee)
The computer actually does counter-pick you at team selection, but it does so before you pick your 3 choices. It doesn't cheat, and picks against your full team of 6 by determining which 3 it thinks you'll take.
Stadium 2 GLC has some very interesting strats, because of the greater pool of rentals, more widespread Selfdestruct, Explosion and reworked Counter and Mirror Coat
2:48 Shoutouts to @Werster, the legend who inspired me to take up pokemon speedrunning and truly the ultimate pokemon video game master. This dude is just built different. Highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen it watch his AGDQ 2013 Firered post-event speedrun.
There are some good choices in the rentals. Jynx, gengar, starmie, slowbro, rhydon, and some others I can't think of off the top of my head. You sort of have to pick based off of movesets instead of pokemon in stadium.
I remember beating this game a few times between the ages of eight and 10 with only rental Pokémon. The elite four in round one was pretty much the only frustrating challenge. Round two was hell, but it was definitely doable.
So my cousins have pokemon stadium on the N64 and we never transferred any GBA pokemon into the game so we just had tons of fun with rental pokemon. While we never beat any of the regular cups, I am the only one of us who beat the elite 4 in the gym leader tower. I don't remember everyone I used, but Haunter, Jynx, Zapdos, and at least one of the other legendary birds were on the team.
definitely would love a 100% video. i played this game religiously as a kid and there is so much i did not know. (i only used rental Pokémon cause i was a foolish child who didnt know any better or how to use the game pack
I played r/b/y and stadium a LOT when I was a kid, and let me tell you. Thunder, hydro pump and fire blast seem like great moves, and their power is incredible... until these 70% accuracy moves miss four times in a row. I understand why speedrunners rely on those moves, but at the same time, I can only imagine how many runs have been killed by "lol thunder missed five times in a row"
Lmao I just watched Werster lose an hour to full-para + missing a bunch of thunders with Jolteon/Starmie vs the cool trainer with mew and tauros. And now this came up in my recommend
You can't overpower Stadium with transfers because enemy pokemon are always set to be the same level as your highest pokemon. So bringing imports means training all your transfer pokemon to be the same level first. But you could EV train and carefully choose and control movements before transferring pokemon.
I haven't forgot when I set up rain and used thunder with my Dragonair on the CPU's Spearrow, both lvl15 in Stadium 2 AND IT, FREAKING, MISSED! If I remember correctly it was holding bright powder and man, does it still infuriates me?! And this video just took my soul to that very moment...
I absolutely adored this game growing up I got it as a Christmas gift from my mother when she sent us an N64 that had the game with it. I had played it from the time I got it when I was five all the way up to 15 when the TV that we used for the game broke and we couldn't use it on our flat screen. And I vividly remember unlocking round two by myself using only rental pokémon and struggling to clear round two using those same rentals because I did not know I could use my pokémon from red blue and yellow in the game.
I decided to subscribe in hopes that you do the 100% video. I'm turning notifications on and I'll be looking for it within the next month. Take care brother and have a good one 👊
cant remember but beating pokemon stadium as a kid was a nightmare didnt get pokemon yellow till later on.. so had to use mostly rentals and they suck lol
As a child that didn't really know or care about stats that instead just played with my favorites, the only reason I was able to beat Stadium was because of a chance encounter with a kid I don't remember even knowing that lent me their copy of Yellow version to give me their Mewtwo and Mew that was somehow taught Surf twice 😂 All that said, I at least knew that Starmie was really good and my all-time favorite attack animation in any game has to be Starmie using Thunder, and the play-by-play text for super effective crits was so absurdly frequent that I just thought it was the default 😂
When I was 10 this game was the definition of HELL and I didn't have any way of transferring Pokemon into Stadium and those rental cancer pokemon were awful that I never beaten R2.
I couldn't find a clip, but thankfully there was enough UI for me to find the moment in the full run: ruclips.net/video/6g-V7prG9zA/видео.htmlh37m08s (17 hours 37 minutes in if the timestamp doesn't work) Kind of amazing that he got it during his world record attempt
Are there categories for playing with Pokemon from the gameboy games, but where you have to include all your time catching the team in them? I think it would be interesting to balance the amount of time it takes to catch a team, vs the amount of time it saves in Stadium itself. (Especially if glitches are restricted, so you can't just pick up something overpowered in five minutes.)
I grew up lower income. Someone gifted us an N64 and Stadium. I never had a transfer pack, GB, or the GB games, so I have only ever played with rental Pokemon. It was one of my favorite games growing up because of the minigames and playing rental team battles against my brothers. The fact NSO doesn't have transfer mechanics doesn't bother me in the slightest cause my nostalgia for the game is transfer Pokemon free. But I get why people are upset. Regardless of the fact that the meta is paired down to like, 10 Pokemon, I imagine it would be fun to play through RBY and then be able to take your beloved team into another game to play through with them. TLDR; I never had transfer so rental IS what Stadium is to me, but I get the backlash
Here's to hoping that RBY and the other GameBoy (and GBA) Pokemon games will be released on the Switch! Now my Zoomer self can play Pokemon Stadium like I've always hoped lmao
That mispronunciation of Gengar 🤨 had me pause and be like... Do you even play pokemon bro? This is my first time watching your video so I instinctually got that vibe
I just saw the title and caused pain and I cried cause it triggered nightmares (and the good YoloDrill) Edit1: ty for the correct Gengar pronunciation Edit2: go for Complete Round 1 👀 I’ll allow footage for it
"We're gonna give you Pokemon Stadium but we're going to leave out the most important feature." I mean I expected this of Nintendo but I'm still disappointed.
man when i was useing zapdos. the pokemon in the gym castle used thunderwave and i was laughing thinking its not gonna have no effect. and then it said zapdos got paralized. im like what!!!!!!!!!! man gen 1 sure was diffrent back then.
Should I cover a 100% Speedrun of Pokemon Stadium? 🤔
I'd love to hear about Stadium speedruns. I love the difficulty of their battle system.
Yes! Love it
Would be amazing to here about to beat the game category!
Absolutely, it's a 19 hour run and that's gotta be full of crazy things
I'll watch anything you feel inspired enough to cover

Your pronunciation of Gengar made me do a double take 😂
I...how...how do you mess up gengar...
Jenjar
Going to use this to tilt pikemon fans now 😂
Same, lol
It’s the world champ diff baby
Give it to Werster to have a Thunderbolt miss late in the run.
Oh, don't curse him with the gen 1 miss...🤣🤣
@@johnathanpatrick6118 That gen 1 miss wasn't a 1/256 either. It was a 1/65536 chance. Stadium does the miss roll twice for that perfect miss.
Werster's reactions are always incredible to witness

Seen his pokemon safari zones? Incredible funny when he caught tauros and chansey, but not the actual easy ones.

i LITERALLY could hear the thunder sound effect despite having it heard the last time like 10 years ago

Beating round 1 with rentals is rather easy, including Mewtwo.
Round 2 on the other hand... Good luck and pray to the RNG Gods, you WILL need it.
Especially with how many Stadium R2 trainers have multiple mons with twave and body slam :')
i think if you know what's good and what's not good in gen 1 it's definitely doable without trying too hard. most mewtwo sets, if they're piloted by an AI, are hilariously easy to stall with chansey. looking it up, 2 of the 3 rental chanseys you'd end up using have rest. even though none of them have softboiled that should be plenty. also one of them has minimize which is nice to have. all the gengars and zams explode to tauros or snorlax can switch into them. the abra/kadabra psychic spam is perfectly good and those mons both also get twave most of the time

Werster: It’s free real estate!
lmao I can't believe I never thought to try 1-hit KO moves against the Mewtwo fight. Crazy.
Did he say Jinjar and not Gengar?? I thought I was experiencing a Mandela effect 😂
I heard jenjar lmao
