I was 17 in 1988 and a huge fan, this was my mythical song. Today I am 52 and worked hard to fulfill my dream to become a pilot. When I land the A330 on JFK , I can see the skyline of New York and it still reminds me to this wonderfull song.
They were endearing and managed a unique musical charm, what they needed was some a bit more down to earth material, they needed hits for the real world and they had the opportunity since they released music from a major label, but yeah... that's a tough one, so they focused on refining the preciousness of their own style
The genius that is Prefab Sprout - this is the quintessential summer song about NY - whenever I am walking in Manhattan, this song plays in my head and this song brings back so many great memories. Love this song with a passion - no one does music like Prefab.
Brilliant song, one of their very finest. I love the retro-production here, it echoes a 1950s/60s sound (Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett...) and the layered vocals, strings and shades of ambient sounds (the passage from 1:50 to 3:00 !). Thomas Dolby, with his production skills, brought so much to the sound of this band.
Would love the 4 Prefabs from the classic lineup to reunite not only with themselves but Thomas Dolby as producer and make a new album. Continue that legacy and make another masterpiece.
@@richardcoles2432 Yes, both hold their own appeal. Latest news on Wendy was this:- www.sagegateshead.com/press-releases/sage-gateshead-announces-wendy-smith-as-new-direct/
Prefab Sprout was never underrated by the people in the know. Sure, they didn't sell millions of records like others but how do you quantify success? The fact that they left an incredible musical legacy is success itself!
I guess they did have a peak of true success with this album. I guess I did constantly listen to the singles from this album on the radio as a child of 12 in my native Spain, so I guess the band's tunes had a whole lot of airplay at that point in, at least, the whole of Europe.
Heard Farron Young on the radio bought the album Steve McQueen still listening to it all these years later , such a brilliant band with so many wonderful tracks to their credit .Paddy is one seriously talented dude.
Prefab Sprout were a brilliant band, the singer/songwriter was a very talented guy. I always thought that they should have been a bigger band than what they were, but they has so many great albums.
Awesome song, exquisite melody uncommonly beautiful music. I felt like I were soaring like a condor over Manhattan, just listening to the song. I've always felt and believe to this day, Prefab was genius, underrated, under appreciated. I only heard "When Love Breaks Down", until I started listening to samples. I was dumb-strikingly amazed, wondering where was I all the years they were around? Stationed in Holy Loch back in the 80s, and I'm sure they passed by Glasgow a time or two. My bad for not having paid attention, nor having had the opportunity to witness greatness in concert! Love you Sprout-you're in my top 10!
I was listening to this song today on a Portuguese radio and it sounded very familiar. When I came home I googled "Hey Manhattan, here I am" and I ended up here. Nice to find another cool song from the 80s! :)
Not by the fans. They did make it in the end, but Cars & Girls was one of their best songs, yet was not a hit when it should have been. In this song, there are so many genres of music, classical (strings), calypso, soul, pop, smooth, jazz (trumpet).
Loved this song and had the album when it was new. The song would made me wish I was living in Manhattan while I was living in the other coast of SF which was also great but wanted to be in a bigger more exciting city. I just came across the album and I still have a turntable and made me want to own again. Not sure how popular this group was back then bc I hardly heard anyone talk about this group or this song. Yup, back when you could love groups and songs all to yourself and felt more connected to the songs.
Este tema fue producido por Andy Richards, quien trabajó también con los Pet Shop Boys, entre otros grandes artistas. Su remix de Suburbia es espectacular.
I simply adore this song! Prefab Sprout was an amazing group. Love their music. Actually I really miss the music of that era. They don't make good music anymore..
One of my fondest memories is attributed to this song. I saved up for 6 months from Christmas to the beginning of july for my holiday. It felt like the longest 6 months of my life waiting for that holiday from work to come around but it eventually did. In my mind I had imagined the moment it would officially start for me over and over again. I hired a flash car on the Saturday morning, jumped behind the wheel, put my shades on then fired up this song on the stereo at full blast........."Guess what, summers arrived......I feel the worlds on my side". Happy days!
Tremendous group and what a songwriter ... I believe Paddy Mcaloon was ambivalent to fame itself and let his music do the talking ... certainly a magnificent creative talent. Always liked them and listening to them as I get older somehow brings back memories and make them sound even better ... the music is timeless and hopefully more and more will enjoy the exquisite sounds of Prefab Sprout and I regard that as sweet success much more than by expessing it in financial terms
l'émotion que cette chanson que je pourrais écouter en boucle m'ouvre une envie de croisé le monde ,les gens , m'enivré de découvrir le plus beau ! la fraternité, l'amour!
I was 14 when I´ve heard this wonderful song for the first time. I still ´love it as a spring/easter popsong and will go on listen to this song every spring. I´m almost 50 now!
The most beautiful and the most current song that we could write in tribute to the city of NEW YORK and Manhattan, definitely.Equal to "NEW YORK,NEW YORK" by Frank SINATRA even if my preference goes to PREFAB SPROUT (then i already love SINATRA's song). There is magic that is discovery, wonder and to end the attachment. The fascination of this song and Manhattan is inseparable and irresistible,a masterpiece more of this wonderful band.
That is such a feel good song... I love the bit where you see the close up of the Statue of Liberty ... that’s so great it just slows... especially when you have phones or cans on your ears so uplifting..
Forget Yesterday - this is the song I wish I'd written - firmly in my top ten tunes of all time (cheek to cheek, bye bye blackbird, carey and six more...)

Prefab Sprout: Criminally underrated band
Absolutely agree entirely! 😊
Yes my friend. Criminally underrated
this guy is a genius...songwriter.- lyricist....super talent that was never recognized by the music industry...

Totally agree with your statement. And it is the truth.
Absolutely spot on👍🏻
i bought a few records

I love how the violins in this song makes the whole composition so light, it feels like flying over Manhattan like bird.

Paddy at his most Broadway-like songwriting, even the music video looks like a montage from a musical lol
I love this so much!

agree...as does Lorraine from Deacon Blue

amen to that!
Unfortunately, here in the States they were underrated. Supplanted by weak, angry rap, hiphop, garbage (not the group) etc...
This is real music and rap is crap!
it took me a while to have close look at them, but now I'm hooked very sincerely

Hey Manhattan!
Guess what, summer's arrived,
I feel the world's on my side
The Brooklyn Bridge stretches below me
A billion souls all dying to know me
Well here I am, loaded with promise
And knee deep in grace
What I want is here on my face and
I feel like I own the whole damn place
Hey Manhattan, here I am
Call me star-struck Uncle Sam.
Strolling Fifth Avenue
Just to think, Sinatra's been here too
These myths we can't undo,
They lie in wait for you
We live them till they're
True Manhattan doo-bie-doo
Hey Manhattan doo-bie-doo
Somedays you've got to get outside
Look there's the Carlyle
That's the place where Kennedy stayed and,
Where were you when he died?
(Yeah some things are slow to fade.)
There they were, loaded with promise
And knee deep in fate
When what you want shows on your face and
All that's left litters the whole damn...
Hey Manhattan, here I am
Call it bad luck Uncle Sam
Scrounging Fifth Avenue
Just to think the poor could live here too
But what are they to do? These myths belong to you,
We live them till they're
True Manhattan doo-bie-doo
Hey Manhattan doo-bie-doo
