In order to save his dying father, young stunt cyclist Johnny Blaze sells his soul to Mephistopheles and sadly parts from the pure-hearted Roxanne Simpson, the love of his life. Otherwise, his girlfriend would feel the suffering she inflicts just the same as everyone else. Everyone inflicts pain even if they don't mean to. And stacked up that's what makes the Penance Stare so deadly.

If it was D&D, Abigor would have been immune to nonmagical weapon attacks.
Which is why the first swipe missed, but the second hit -- it was just a mundane chain at first, but then Ghost Rider imbued magic into it and that kicked its effectiveness up several notches.
He never wrapped the chain around him. He spun the chain to create a vortex to draw in the “wind”. He lite the chain so that it would burn him up as he was drawn in.

Actually Ghost Rider did kill Thanos before in the comics and it was confirmed Thanos is scared of Ghost Rider simply because he's literally a supernatural being that is capable of killing bad people without remorse and that's what makes Ghost Rider the most terrifying anti-hero
