The 'oni' images you shown on the video are actually Nio guardians found at the entrance of Buddhist temples. They are Dharmapala, wrathful gods that protects Buddhism.
This is a great visual survey of Japanese mythology that makes some of their mythology easy to understand. This is the story of 2 (of 3) of Japan's most evil Yokai (meaning perhaps monsters). The third story is in Captivating History's book on Japanese Mythology.
Human mythology is captivating, the character arcs, fables, and philosophies are more ever the essence of energy in storytelling today. These are what broght me here after learning the moral codes in The Hobbit Trilogy.
Shoten-doji is kids play compared to Prince Stoku. He terrorized Japan for centuries. He was "pacified" by an Emperor who moved him to a shrine in the capital. The last part of her name is said "mah-eh." Also, her spirit went into a rock after she was killed on fox form. She was then released by a monk to go to the heavens. "Spread the knowledge." -Limfamy 😋
Jealousy drove her opponents to label her as a yokai. Over and over the narrative is spread around the country and thus she became the victim. Poor girl.
Hello Captivating History , So far loved this clip you made on Most Evilest Yokai. Cna be able to make one of the last most evil Yokai as well on the Japanese Mythology gods? Like on the story of creation from their POV ect.
Good work! My favorite part is the dead 酒呑童子's head keep on biting 頼光's helmet. It would make an awesome tatoo! (By the way, please be careful with the pronunciation of Tamamo-no-mae 玉藻前. It's -MAh-E, not like English female name, Mae.)
