In similar way the Tanuki suit, from Super Mario, comes from a leaf. While being able to fly, Mario also can turn into a statue using the suit. Tanuki, for his association with money, it's said to give lucky in your business. Hence the whole joke/pun of Animal Crossing.
Oh wow, this had a few mistakes: 1) "Racoon dog" is the correct english term for this canid. The mistake people often make is calling them racoons. 2) Foxes are not universally evil in Chinese folklore. 3) Considered how rarely racoon dogs appear in Chinese folklore, I would say that the tales of them mostly originated in Japan.
Tanuki are indeed Raccoon Dogs, but not all raccoon dogs are tanuki. Tanuki is the formal English name for the Japanese sub-species N. p. viverrinus, which is markedly different from continental sub-species like N. p. procyonoides or ussuriensis.
Fun fact Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period, was nicknamed “Tanuki (たぬき親父)” because of his cunning way of taking over the whole Japan.

The hilarious thing is that the tanuki having giant balls isn't about fertility. Japanese gold smiths would use tanuki fur pelts to flatten golden balls out into thin gold leafs/sheets, because the fur pelts are durable and yet soft, able to allow hammer blows to shape the gold underneath it without being damaged. So the connection between tanuki, giant balls, and wealth are the result of a casual crude observation for how literal balls of gold were covered with tanuki pelts while being flattened out.
I am currently at episode 1 in an anime called BNA and got so interested in a Tanuki, which led me here. Thanks to your funny and informative video. 😂 now I understand why a character is embarrassed to be called a Tanuki.
It’s funny because I’m looking this up to learn more about the Nook’s and at 0:19 the first picture of the Tanooki statue it looks identical to one of the statues in the game that I have placed right outside of Nook’s Cranny

@@cosmicdoggo9296 In Japanese folklore it's just the opposite. Kitsune (foxes) are highly skilled transmorphers who can doppelgange about any other creature and easily maintain the form/shape. Tanuki (raccoon-dogs) are much more rookie and clumsier in shape-changing, easily get distracted and lose the camoflauged shape/form. Tanukis hold leafs on their head to help concentrate in holding the doppelgange shape. EDIT: Cats are somewhere between those two. Then, cats usually acquire shape-changing only when they grow old and like to stay in the shape they have changed into
I'm seeing that Trigger incorporated a little bit of the lore when making BNA. The Tanuki girl Michiru could shapeshift, and when she was trying to change into human form, she put a leaf on her head. They had the Tanuki statue in her room where she was staying. When she flew with the albatross, she wished she could be a wanderer as well. Perhaps it's lore will match up with Nazuna's character. BNA: Brand New Animal is an amazing anime done by Trigger. I highly recommend it.
Tanuki is Japanese Raccoondog. Only subspecies that differ from the other sspes in chromosome level. There are about 5 other raccoon dog subspecies in Koreas, Vietnam, Eastern China and Ussuria/Amuria (S-E Siberia). The Ussurian subspecies was introduced to West Russia in early 1900s and is now conquering Europe piece-by-piece from East to West. Consider invasive pest species in here as they eat about anything, survive high-snow Winters by hibernating from November to March and produce up to 10 pups /year...
