A bit of cultural info, for those not in the know, Halloween is derived from the celebration of All Hallows Eve, which is the Christianized version of the Celtic Holiday Samhain (pronounced sah-win). Samhain was the Celtic New Years' celebration, and many of the practices for the holiday we have today actually have roots in that ancient holiday. The Celtic peoples believed the veil between the realms of the living and departed were at their weakest at the point where one year ended and another began, the celebration of that time was Samhain. In order to keep faeries and goblins from messing with the festivities several people, especially the children, would dress up as fey and goblins and dance about to distract the faeries and goblins; grand feasts were set out for the living and the spirits of those that have passed through the veil for a visit on that night, presumably there were places to eat that were apart from where the dead did so you could actually eat food that wouldn't potentially hurt you; people would wear scary masks to frighten away any fey or goblins that got passed the dancers or malicious spirits that passed through the veil for the night, some sources I came across even made mention of the masks being used to scare away other supernatural creatures as well (like demons, but this is likely the work of Christian scribes adding in their own religious contributions). Jack-o-Lanterns actually date back to an Old Irish tradition of carving Giant Beets, and possibly overly large Turnips, into lanterns. You can still get "giant" beets today, they're called Sugarbeets, so if you want to get a bit more historically authentic with your Jack-o-lanterns, you could go and get a few of those and try carving them into actual lanterns. They even have an old Irish tale attached to them on how they got their name, it's called Jack of the Lantern. Now, whether Gaijin Goomba decides to do research and video on all this remains to be seen, but I think it would be seasonally appropriate. That said his specialty tends to be Japanese culture, so the cultural aspects of European nations is a bit outside his wheelhouse. I'm part Irish, and I'm proud of my heritage; even so, I'm also a bit of an anime fan, a bit more than casual but a bit less than a devotee. Ireland has a lot of interesting cultural components that aren't found in any other part of Europe, or the world. The Courts of the Fey are something wholely unique to Ireland when looking at European faerie lore. While things aren't entirely one-to-one, I think it's safe to say that fey are Europe's version of youkai as much as Youkai are Japan's versions of Fey, both groupings have a wide swath of entities in them and many of those entities actually seem to have similar traits when compared. The Brownie (pronounced Broo-Nee) is a faerie that is entirely Ireland's, they're described as being tricksters and pranksters, but they always seem to go out of their way to make sure the mortals they mess with don't inadvertently die or suffer potentially fatal wounds, they like to keep the game going with a single mortal for as long as they can, but if you manage to successfully catch one then the brownie is forced to be a servant in your house for the rest of your life and only requires payment of scraps from at least 2 meals from you every day. The Kelpie, in Irish lore (I heard it also has tales in Scottish lore but I don't really know much about the Scottish Kelpie beyond its color being white), is a bit more malicious and dangerous. In Irish lore, the Kelpie is a black horse that resides in the deep waters of rivers or ponds, usually rivers, and will do it's best to drive mortals into the water, sometimes carrying them personally, and drowning them so it can tear out their livers and feast upon them, but the black horse isn't its only form. According to the Irish tales of the Kelpie, this fey has the ability to take on the form of a big black dog and human (usually a man) dressed all in black, each form has different approaches and strategies for getting you to go in or near the deep waters that are its home. Then you have fey that aren't benign or malicious, they're more reflections of aspects of nature and life in a more cohesive form, like the Dullahan. The dullahan is another of those Ireland only faeries, and has been getting a lot of attention the past few years in anime and manga. The Dullhan is known by a few nicknames: The Night Rider, The Headless Horseman with a Headless Horse, The Coachman of the Dead. All are pretty accurate, for entirely different reasons. Dullahans aren't actually headless, their head just isn't attached their shoulders (some accounts even state the eyes glow and it uses its own head as a lantern), and its horse (or horses) is/are stated to be headless, I've never found any accounts of where the heads of their horses are kept. The Dullahan is called the "Night Rider" because it is known to only ride about at night. Some accounts say they are actually driving coach with 5 to 12 horses (all headless). But no matter which version you are talking about they all have one thing in common, they reap the souls of the dead and cart them off to the afterlife, the act is usually somewhat messy. It is said that if blood from the weapon of a dullahan strikes you then you are fated to be reaped by them the following night, it is for this reason people are told to keep off the road at night, as well as keep away from the doors and windows at night. As for their weapons, they are usually stated to have a sword made from the femur of a human or a whip made of a human's spine, which is pretty dark (and maybe a bit metal). And in the world of not-fey lore, we have the tale of the King of Birds. In Irish lore, it said the Wren is the King of Birds. Long story short, Irish lore says that the wren earned the title King of birds by sneakily riding upon the back of an eagle to the highest the eagle could go then jumped off its back and flow as high its wings and the air would allow, thus earning the title King of Birds because it managed to fly higher than any other bird. Now, wouldn't that be interesting dive into? Sorry about that little rant, this season is the only time I feel is appropriate to really go off on Irish lore.
I always thought this was a Mario reference. Tarin clearly looks like Mario and he eats Mushrooms. Also the fact Mario has a Tanooki suit in Mario 3. I know he doesn't turn into Tanooki Mario from a Mushroom but thats what I thought this was referencing. Maybe it is a double reference.

Hey gaijin and fans I could use some advice. I'm currently writing a novel set in the modern day where the main character is a ninja working with an international team. Throughout the book she's demonstrated a number of techniques and feats during her missions (side note your "which ninja" series has been extremely helpful with those) which has her teammates openly speculating wether she's actually in fact a human and not actually a vampire or a succubus given her apparent abilities to hypnotize, move without sound, be in multiple places at once, change her appearance to look like almost anyone and seemingly appear and disappear at will (much to her amusement and subtle encouragement). What would make the scene perfect is if I could have her say something like "Well actually they aren't native to Japan but there's a Yokai called the ..... which fits the bill" But yeah love your channel, keep up the good work P.S, when I get it finished I'll send over a copy for you. Here's hoping you like the result
I headcanon Tarin as having the same voice as Mario did in the cartoons. You know, the New York accent that Lou Albano had? This is pretty much because he looks like Mario.
I'm considering starting a list of each individual youkai you've covered and make a counter for every time the same ones are mentioned. I wouldn't be surprised if Tanuki would have a count in the double digits by this point. Maybe I could do that with the various ninja techniques brought up in Which Ninja also.
Of course he would repeat the jutsu though. They are essentially judgement criteria by which he ranks the would-be ninja. This isn't a high school course, so there wouldn't be much of a point to make a comprehensive video about all the jutsu and just point to them in his analysis videos and how they are utilized by the character in question. I'd like that too, but that's not quite the charm of GG's videos.
ya know.... that story about the tanuki beating its belly so long that it died reminds me about the pokemon move belly drum. it maxs the users attack stat but at the cost of half the pokemon's hp
4:10 Ah, yes, the tsutsumi. Mid-range percussion beauty. It is indeed the primary inspiration behind the tom-tom, and is still used in percussion samples to this day. Back home, this is also a common drum for bards to play, going by 'serodara', or 'calming' (terrible translation but it is used for soothing melodies and rhythms). Actually, the Tanuki are really awesome, kyuute, ornery little shits, lolz Like lemmings, they have a really endearing quality to them...and likely have just as harsh of a bite... xD
Do you think you could do a video on the Shopkeeper in Link's Awakening? I dont knkw why but his appearance as well as his profession has me to believe that he was created based on a type of magician or wizard that involves theft. But his inspiration seems hard to find.
I have a suggestion. With Halloween approaching how about a discussion of the festival of Samhain? Another could be a video about vampires seeing as every culture has their own.
Heck yeah, do more Zelda yokai! I'm not a Patreon supporter because I'm broke, but consider this a verbal ballot in favor of more episodes on Zelda creatures!
When I first played Link's Awakening DX, I thought it was a raccoon dancing. Later on, I learned about Tanooki. Then I realized how much the raccoon made sense. When I saw Gaijin Gamers play Link's Awakening (I can't afford it...or any Switch games, right now), the belly drumming reminded me of Haunted Junction. NOW, that Gaijin explained about WHY the drumming makes sense, I enjoy the Tanooki legend even more!
I had never played links awakening past the starting screen on its original GameBoy release, and this was when I was nine. I was born in the same year this game came out. But immediately upon seeing that raccoon thumping its belly in the mysterious forest, I knew it was a tanuki with all the fog going around. These little critters are notorious for pulling pranks; it was tanuki possession I was most surprised to learn about in this video, yet it makes an odd amount of sense. I didn’t make the connection until you pointed it out, thinking that Tarin was just referencing Mario eating mushrooms when he turned back.
Also Mario likes mushrooms and transforms into a Tanooki but is nice to see another layer of inspiration that explains the origins of why that animal in particular.
I swear I thought that drum sound was computer or keyboard generated for almost all my life just for comical relief sounds in Japanese moments in cartoons
I Remember Seeing my Very 1st Picture of a Tanuki a Few Years Ago Because I Also Remember Thinking”oh my God,It’s so Damn Adorable,Where Can I Adopt 1 of Those?”a Few Weeks Later I Watched 1 of Gaijin Goomba’s Videos About a Tanuki,&,I’m Still Very Disappointed
In a future episode of Pokemon, Ash's father has been tricked by a tanuki-Pokemon, after going to the bathroom one night. He hasn't come back ever since.
I didn’t know that this Tanuki was drumming on his belly before I watched this video because of the Sprites in the Game Boy Versions of this game I thought he was Constantly looking right and left
Pon poka Pon? Now you have me wanting to play patapon. I really enjoy that game. I wonder if that game will ever be on here although I don't think there are any yoki in that game. Although some of those bosses probably have connections to yoki if not some of the enemies.
I think it’s a mario easter egg, since Mario has a tanuki costume, and moustache like our guy here. But this video got me thinking about Majin Buu, because he do share some traits and after the last Episode of Gegege no Kitaro that had Dragon Ball and Naruto characters, such as; King Yama and Ninetails. Majin Buu must be something similar to a tanuki, he beat his chest, he posses magic and can transforms to deceive.
I would also like to point out that there is a tenuki doing the very same gut slapping thing in Mario Sunshine only this one sold you shine sprites as well as a dysfunctional boat.
The fat plumbers, Mushrooms, Leaves, a Tanuki Suit, a Racoon Tail & Ears, the coins... [Thinks back to Super Mario Bros 3] Are we sure.... Mario & Luigi aren't possessed by Tanuki...?
I’ve been curious about Tanuki Tarin ever since I realizes he was a tanuki, not a raccoon! (Also...that sprite scared me as a kid.) But...did Tarin eat the Sleepy Toadstool you eventually pick to take to the witch to get the powder to break the curse? I...kinda always assumed that (even though it sets most everything else on fire...) since he spends all his time you can find him sleeping.
Did you see the 2012 TMNT(well, specifically theTales of The TMNT,(the final season with those characters and world)) storyline The Samurai, starring rabbit Samurai Usagi, which had a big segment were they were getting the run around from Tanuki? If you haven't, i'd highly recommend it.
Okay, great show and all, but that's twice you said "back to the start" of the forest. It doesn't take you back to the start, it takes you to a different location around the middle that you might not have even seen yet.
Y’know, I’m just glad it’s big belly he’s pounding on, and not his...OTHER enlarged body parts... This game would have had a much different ESRB Rating xD
Yeah, considering the mythos about their nutsacks, I can't help but thinking there are stories bout them stretching it taut as a drum skin to make those sounds. If their sacks are as large as they say though, I think you could be excused for thinking they're pounding on their bellies and not their junk.
There are several accounts of murder victims being tossed into outhouses, so it's conceivable that the dead would "reanimate" as yokai, but yeah, I agree with you. I don't think they would be as friendly as the TGH in Zelda :P
Gaijin, there's a recent episode of Carmen Sandiego that takes place in Japan. I would love to see you look into what there is about Japan in the episode as well as some characters in the series (Paperstar, Shadowsan etc.)
@Gaijin Goombah Media This is a recent movie I watched on CrunchyRoll, but I think you could analyse it for the Which Ninja series. It's a movie called "BlackFox." The opening scenes might peak your interest in classical ninja equipment.

Oh. Interesting and relevant. Most pokemon who know this move are racoon-like as well, no? I'm not enough into pokemon, I'm afraid.
Actually, the Tanuki are really awesome, kyuute, ornery little shits, lolz
Like lemmings, they have a really endearing quality to them...and likely have just as harsh of a bite... xD
Gaijin: 'Yokai are everywhere lately'
Mien Keredomo Orun Da Yo (song): "Kon'nani oru yo obake-tachi"
7:17 He has an Italian accent, obviously.
I always imagined him sounding Scottish, even his name sounds vaguely Scottish to me.
I drum on my belly all the time. Maybe I was a tanuki in a previous life.
I think covering "Western Yokai" is a must for Halloween.
Had a tough day at work. Time to relax to some Yokai Watchers.
Would love to see a deep dive on the concept on the world of Link's Awakening. Especially the no death ending.
Do you think you could do a video on the Shopkeeper in Link's Awakening? I dont knkw why but his appearance as well as his profession has me to believe that he was created based on a type of magician or wizard that involves theft. But his inspiration seems hard to find.
Wonderful video, GG! You always provide us with such quality content. Thank you so much!
I appreciate all the hard research you do
This is awesome 😎 and the history and the video
8:29 okay, curious now. Anyone know where the clip from came from here?
It's from the 2018 iteration of the Ge Ge Ge no Kitarou anime. Fun series of spooky yokai-themed manga/anime.
Did you know that Ieyasu Tokugawa was nickname tanuki because of talent in tactics
More like because he was fat. He even died by choking on tempura.
8:27 "GeGeGe no Kitarou is a cute little show where nothing bad happens at all!"
Well, October dose seem to be the best time to make a Yokai Hunters month if you want.
I really hope the Patreons have you explore more yokai in Zelda cause this was fascinating
At 7:04 the guy looks like Mario holding mushrooms turn into a Tanuki in the last thing he he remembered was biting into a toadstool.
Damn tanukis always getting into stuff but their cuddly
they’re
Great video as always~!
I have a suggestion. With Halloween approaching how about a discussion of the festival of Samhain? Another could be a video about vampires seeing as every culture has their own.
Id like to thank you for introducing me to Onmyoji in the last vid. I started playing it after watching the vid and its such an awesome game O/
Please do more Yokai in Link games!!! The Link games are one of my favs
Less than a minute ago. I"VE FINALLY DONE IT!
Man, Tanukis were trolls before trolls became a thing
Raccoons play the drum, but do they flip rooms like my oni? No? the supreme sutzumi drummer is decided then.
if you broke into a song at 1:54 i would say that was pretty close to prince of egypt.
Long story short : The Tanuki are Japanese equivalent of the Celtic Fae Folk
It’s not a raccoon but a raccoon DOG!
5:04 Someone walking home after a night of drinking and getting hopelessly lost? So, Conker's Bad Fur Day?
i love your videos man! can you plz take a look at pokemon conquest and how the pokemon fit the warlords?
It's spooktober my dudes
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!
With Persona 5 Royal coming out soon, any plans on taking a look at some of the monsters from the Persona series?
I just wish that they properly called him a Tanuki in the remake.
Dang, where is the music from 0:25 to 1:17 from? It sounds so familiar.
He ate a toadstool... and then turned into a raccoon?
Are we sure he wasn't just a Mario gag?
Love the voice for Tarin.😂
Oh yes pretty pls! *not a patreon but still loves the idea of all the Zelda yokai*
1:05 ....paper? What's the name of that Yokai?
Wonderful Video 👍
Wow that sommening anamashion is amazing
I would also like to point out that there is a tenuki doing the very same gut slapping thing in Mario Sunshine only this one sold you shine sprites as well as a dysfunctional boat.
Anyone know the anime with that little girl with black hair getting duped by the tanuki? Looks funny. :P
what's the name of the anime on the 4:43 mark
Although not mention it's Bulbapedia article the tanuks'i drumming of its belly could have been a partial inspiration for the Pokemon move belly drum
Has he gone over Calamity Ganon? I know he’s covered the blights, but I am just curious.
Cool video!
The fat plumbers,
Mushrooms, Leaves, a Tanuki Suit,
a Racoon Tail & Ears, the coins...
[Thinks back to Super Mario Bros 3]
Are we sure.... Mario & Luigi aren't possessed by Tanuki...?
8:29 Where is this clip from?
Gegege no kitaro
I've been watching it its pretty good
I’ve been curious about Tanuki Tarin ever since I realizes he was a tanuki, not a raccoon! (Also...that sprite scared me as a kid.)
But...did Tarin eat the Sleepy Toadstool you eventually pick to take to the witch to get the powder to break the curse? I...kinda always assumed that (even though it sets most everything else on fire...) since he spends all his time you can find him sleeping.
Well that explains the ghibli movie title pom poko then. The sound of tanuki drumming their bellies.
I hope you can look more into the yokai lore in LoZ.
MINI-SERIES! MINI-SERIES! MINI-SERIES!
Where's the Zelda-focused Yokai Hunter episode?!!
I WANT TO KNOW WHICH YOKAI IS THE MOST SIMILAR TO THAT TOILET HAND
HELP:What's the name of the Anime at 2:24
So Gaijin I heard a new SSR is coming soon and particularly its a Shikigami not from the Minamoto family so I’m excited
Awesoooomeee! Hpi Spooktober, Bruh! 👌🎃🇵🇭❤️
5:04 you sure they didn't just get lost cuz they were drunk?
8:28 Would that Really be the worst thing? I'd rather be a Tanuki than a human!!!
I really hope the patreons vote for the Zelda yokai. I may know of Keaton but the hand in the toilet has been haunting me for years!
*cops arrest a tanuki*
Tanuki: It was prank bro!
I would love to learn more about the tenuki and a kitsuni
I would love to see an explanation for the toilet ghost hands. I can only think of one similar yokai, but that one is a very very evil spirit.
Still surprised we haven't seen an episode on Nurarihyon no Mago yet. That show is literally about yokai and the Night Parade
Which explains the abilities in Pom Poko.
@Gaijin Goombah Media This is a recent movie I watched on CrunchyRoll, but I think you could analyse it for the Which Ninja series. It's a movie called "BlackFox." The opening scenes might peak your interest in classical ninja equipment.
