This is actually almost as tame as he go with Fates Warning. Some stuff is absolutely insane! In 1999 Fates Warning put out a concept album called A Pleasant Shade of Grey (Gray if you’re American) where the entire track is essentially a single song split into parts. It’s really worth checking out.

Fates doesn’t get the recognition they deserve! The recording quality in a small enclosed space (I would assume) doesn't do justice to this masterpiece of a song. This is one of the songs I regularly listen to every now and then, ever since I first heard it somewhere in the early nineties. Anyone hearing this the first time now please go and listen the studio version of the song. And of course this recording goes with the theme of the channel, didn't mean it like that. Just that this song deserves a listen.
Yeah, Zonder is a fantastic player. Fates Warning didn't click with me until a few years ago, but I'm mad for the band now. The albums they've done with Jarzombek are out of this world.
Mark Zonder has been a favorite of mine for a very long time. You mentioned the "offtime china" he uses, he does that a lot in his grooves on the china, or the ride (or bell) and that's a very signature thing of his and Fates Warning's music, and something I also really love to hear from them. I actually started playing drums just because I wanted to attempt this stuff! lol. I'm mainly a guitar player, but several years back my wife had bought me a set of V-Drums for Christmas which are great to have in a home studio, but I spent many hours playing over some FW tracks. No way do I make all of those little hits and everything he does, but it's fun to break them down and put them to the metronome slowly and build them up and try! (Same process for learning anything you want on guitar, no matter how difficult.) Anyway, if you haven't found them already, Mark has three (I think) videos that are of really good quality that he did at a clinic in which are playthroughs of FW songs, so definitely check those out, or don't and do a reaction instead! Here is a link to one of them that I believe would make a great reaction video if you decide to do more of his. Also, THANK YOU SO MUCH to the one who made this request and made this video happen! - ruclips.net/video/3s1oacDFWyc/видео.html
Fates Warning is one of my favs ever. Zonder was unique, nobody plays like him. Bobby Jarzombek is a "better" drummer but the musicality and originality of Mark Zonder are incredible. BTW, that "rim" hits and the "moving" tom are electronic drums. One of the things made Zonder unique was the integration of some electronic drums with the acoustic kit. Nice video as usual, Andrew!
Bobby isn't a better drummer than Mark . . . They are VERY different players/musicians. But Mark took Fates Warning in a new direction in 1989 with his debut on "Perfect Symmetry". It was as if a Fusion player (even though he was in a Metal band) joined a Metal band who was creating a new subgenre, that would become one of the Fathers of Prog Metal. His timing made FW members take a more angular/atypical approach to their melodies. This was pushing the band forward and not afraid to experiment with their sound. Probably the reason they didn't take off like Queensrÿche, and many years later, Dream Theater, because FW didn't follow a formula. But don't get me wrong, Bobby's last 3 albums with FW and the 2 "Arch/Matheos" (Fates "sister" band) albums are ASTOUNDING. His Brother "Ron" of Watchtower, Blotted Science and Spastic Ink is an INSANE Guitarist :).
I was surprised that this drum teacher (no disrespect) had not recognized that it was electronic drums. "Better" is waaay too subjective for me to go anywhere near. Mark is one of my all time favorites. Yet Bobby is also right up there.
I had the great privilege of playing in a band with Mark in the late 80’s called Plane English ( spin off of Animotion with Astrid Plane). His drumming was always stellar and the best I’ve ever worked with, not to mention he’s genuinely a nice guy! Nice to see a full video of just him playing 👍
You have to out thus in context, that was around 1995. The first time i listened to parallels in college i was like damn, he has 3 hands because it is impossible to do what he is doing.
Great video. Love Mark Zonder's drumming. The album "Parallels" is a must own in my opinion.....oh and he isn't hitting the tom rims...he is hitting Tigger pads that he has placed in various places around his drum kit. ..some are circle pads but the one in front of him is a t-shaped trigger pad. All those odd sounds you heard are coming from those.
defiantly one of my favorites. Zonder is subtle and precise with his timing. would love to hear your take on the song monument. especially, the bridge instrumental. not only is the playing phenomenal imo but the overall orchestration for me is riveting
Andrew I really have enjoyed your vids & proud to be a subscriber for some time now, Fates warning is a great band that has done well & made there own mark & sailed there musical ship very well as metal found itself evolving in many different directions throughout the 90's. Thanks again for a fantastic channel Sir!!
Yes! Mark Zonder is a fantastic drummer! 👍 Very creative and unique style. Has done some great work in other progressive rock/metal projects as well. Check out some of his later stuff too. Thanks, great video! 👍
Please do more reactions for Mark Zonder! This guy have some outstanding videos! His creativity and playing were out of this world, really! I'm a big Fates Warning fan, and until this day I can't believe the drum lines this guy created! Seriously! Watch any "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" performances or "Leave the Past Behind"
Mark Zonder is one of my absolute favorite drummers ever. Totally unique style, while mixing power and finesse. and that high note from Ray was INSANE!
Mark Zonder is an incredible drummer. The Parallels album by Fates Warning is my all time favorite album along with the Perfect Symmetry album. Mark uses electronic drums for a lot of the songs. The guy is an icon.
Hands up to Mark Zonder.in my opinion he's the most complex drummer of all times.big fan of Mark Zonder and fates warning. You can also here his drumming with warlord. His band before joining fates.and also other projects he's done.Mark thunder child Zonder.hell yea.
Zonder is the masterpiece of drumming, after 30 y of playing i manage to play fully only 7 songs of his (1 fates warning and 6 warlord), while i play others, way so many. his complexity is 3pled beyond other drummers so far.
Love Mark Zonder, one of my all time favs. The electronic pads are LP Spike triggers. You need to watch more of him, criminally overlooked and in the shadow of Peart and Portnoy.
Been a fan of Fates Warning since 1984. And they have been putting out albums since then, the latest coming out a little over a year ago. (which also had a guest appearance by Gavin Harrison) They definitely had a huge influence on Dream Theater. Mike Portnoy has filled in for them on drums a few times. There is even live footage of him doing 'Life in Still Water' with them on a tour in Brazil in 2012. You reacted to their current drummer, Bobby Jarzombek, who has been in the band since 2007, around that same time, though it wasn't a Fates Warning song. Check out the official bass/drum playthrough of the Fates Warning song, White Flag, from their album Theories of Flight, which came out in 2016. If that gets blocked, Bobby has other playthroughs from earlier albums on his own channel.
Mark Zonder is one of the few drummers I have ever heard that: 1.) makes the drums sounds like its own instrument in a musical arrangement (no disrespect to all the drummers out there) by adding unique voicing and texture, rather than "just" keeping time by holding the bottom down along with the bass; and 2) I listen to specifically to specifically because the drum parts are so interesting when he plays. I am life long Fates fan and can't wait for Mark and Ray (the vocalist you hear performing on the video) to reconnect for the A-Z project. Thanks for doing this. Stopped by on accident and now will be back... Cheers! :) PS I think those are drum triggers he's using. Not rim shots. But I could be wrong...
Very under rated. I've seen them live 17 times dating back to 1988 at Dallas City limits when Ray could still hit the notes, to Arch/matheos in Houston recently You should friend me maybe we could see a show together
Looks like a mini-China with those offbeat hits; I'd seen Zonder in a few ads for GMS drums and Sabian, this honestly is my first time hearing him play too. Pretty darn amazing.
It's called Ray...and if I'm not mistaken I think James Labrie contributed vocals to the final mix....you'd probably have to ask Mark....just saying...

Great reaction video. Thank's for sharing it. It was a great pleasure watching it. Mark Zonder is my favourite Drummer. And such a nice Guy too ❤️ (Btw.Mark Zonder shared this Video on his Facebook page!) This Beatles hint... Not really one of his Influences in Drumming. Mark Zonder is more like an Unicorn. Nobody plays and sounds like him. Very unique and different to all other Drummer's. If you would like to get more in touch with him, it would make sense to start with Fates Warning's Album : A Pleasant Shade of Grey. Such an amazing Recierd. And in humble opinion it is the second best Progressive Metal Album of all time. Right after Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime. It's separated in 12 Parts. And you will find a Drum Cam Video for every single Part here on RUclips. With a better Quality. This high Notes by Ray Alder you mentioned... You should check out Queensryche's Video Take Hold of the Flame from 1984 LIVE in Tokyo! That's for a lot of People's was the greatest Vocal Performance of all time. Without no doubt. Something you never heard before... Something you will never hear again.... unfortunately.... Those e5 Note Geoff Tate sung are unbelievable! The greatest Vocal Performance of the last 500 Years, if you ask me. This drumming as wel. By Scott Rockenfield. Another totally underrated Drummer. This Guy is incredible. Ray Alder's greatest Vocal Performance for me was on their Double Album : "Still Life". Check out the Song: The Eleventh Hour from that Album. You will also find it here on RUclips. Unbelievable good! Hope, you like it. Keep up your great work. Can't wait for your next reaction videos.👍👍

Get your copy of : A Pleasant Shade of Grey (called: APSoG). The perfect Album to get in touch with them. Or with their Live Album Still Life. It's an Double Album. APSoG - the entire Show on disc 1. And on disc 2 a very best of Fates Warning - also Live. The main reason for that is, everyone in Fates Warning was on their highest peak of Creativity and on their highest level musically. But it would also be great to ask Mark himself what to do next.❤️ That would be amazing!❤️ Wouldn't it? Just an Idea... ^^
I just about wore out this cd as well as well as their perfect symmetry album. I believe the rim hits were electronic on the album with effects added. Very cool and talented progressive band. I want to say they shared a practice space with dream theater in the early years. This was a great time for progressive rock between them and queensryche I was in listening heaven. Thanks for this one Andrew and to the person who requested it.

Im a huge Zonder fan. Glad i had a chance to see him twice & their previous drummer Steve Zimmerman once. Another excellent drummer you might want to check out.
Mark Zonder is a gentlemans drummer who has a skill & understanding wich enables his drumming to compliment his fellow musicians seemingly effortlessly. That is until you watch him play exclusively & seperate from the other pieces in their( Fates Warning band)music & how complex his rhythmic skill carries.Ray Alders singing in these songs are enhanced & thoroughly supported by Mark Zonders drumming wich we are able to fully experience in every song.
Love your channel mate, already seen couple dozens vids, you re doing a great job! Zonder is on my top 5 list.. I'd really like to see you doing a video with APSOG part 5 from fates warning as many things are going on there on his drum cam! Or anything from Warlord period. Cheers!
Andrew, those other things Mark was hitting were electronic drum triggers for samples, if you listen to the studio recording you can hear them more clearly, there are three of them on his kit, the on front and centre, one down just under the ride, and a third further back on the right. He was very ahead of his time incorporating samples to enhance the music.
The great stuff on Mark Zonder is, one could already hear back in '83 when he was with Warlord how exceptional his drumming is. Totally different from what regular metal drummers played back then. e.g. 'Aliens'. Hoglan, Zonder, Jarzombek - the top of the cream.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums it's super cool, you can hear it much better on the albums obviously, but he'll have some electronic cymbal sounds as well. Super cool and interesting
Andrew check his Warlord era as well, you might find some intresting drum grooves and there as well. Mark is a one of a kind drummer in mixing rythms and electronics!
Great reaction Andy! Song is from the 90’s video is earlier 00’s. He uses a lot of triggers. One of my absolute favs along with his replacement in Fates, Bobby Jarzombek. Glad you’ve finally reacted to him! Probably would have picked something off of A Pleasant Shade of Gray, the live drum tracks of which I have conveniently linked here for you. The orchestration on these is off the hook! ruclips.net/p/PLF8q015XmkPTV1l35CBIE7aLOaUZj1gIL
If no one ever mentioned it, you asked what he's hitting(like rims) to make some odd sounds, if I'm not mistaken those are drum trigger pads. They're oddly shaped, but they don't seem to get iin the way.
Zonder much like Peart did, has the ability to make an excellent song even better than it would be, with his magical drum parts. Go watch Portnoy or Jarzombek play this song with Fates and you'll see and hear just how special Zonder is. One of the best.
Mark Zonder, one of my favourite drummers, not only when it comes to Porgressive Metal durmmers. I am a guitar player, but I spent a lot of time listenting to both Part of the Machine and Parallels album focusing only on the drumms, it’s always a joyful experience. When DT came out I couldn’t swallow Mike Portnoy. It was inevitable to compare them. While Portnoy is extremely proficient in tehcnicallity, Zonder maybe not as much, but over all he has a style of his own that is very distibgushible that comunicates a lot about steadiness, fluidity and melody, with a lot of elegance. He is a real artist, and very underrated. Whenever I listen to him I cant evite thinking about Jaki Liebezeit
Neil will always be my favorite percussionist and Danny Carey and Portnoy in and around there but, I always thought that Mark's style was so unique and, as has been said, elegant, that there are times when I consider him my favorite. His ability to weave in and out of time has always seemed unworldly to me. What else to listen to by him? My God, where do I start? From a pure drum porn perspective? APSOG Part V: ruclips.net/video/ZUERwmjS1bI/видео.html Songwise, Monument got a lot of love: ruclips.net/video/gbRQyJ2uuNw/видео.html and maybe my favorite: ruclips.net/video/r7qbBtXULOQ/видео.html
FW wouldn't be the same without Mark....... I first heard him play on this EP called "Deliver Us" by band named Warlord...... man, I wore the shit out of that record :D:D
Thanks for sharing such an Amazing drummer!! Sometimes the patterns hurt the brain. Such as Arena & Apsog Part 5~ Fates Warning!! Also his solo Slavior. Too bad it was short lived. May the band find another singer.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums great content andrew!!! you should definitely check out their current drummer, bobby jarzombek...he's got his own thing goin...oh, n by the way, i'm a 51 year old guitar player that loves watching amazing drummers!!! cheers brother!!! 🍺
Awesome!
(Same process for learning anything you want on guitar, no matter how difficult.)
Anyway, if you haven't found them already, Mark has three (I think) videos that are of really good quality that he did at a clinic in which are playthroughs of FW songs, so definitely check those out, or don't and do a reaction instead! Here is a link to one of them that I believe would make a great reaction video if you decide to do more of his. Also, THANK YOU SO MUCH to the one who made this request and made this video happen! - ruclips.net/video/3s1oacDFWyc/видео.html
One of the very best drummers in prog. No one could incorporate that much melody in drumming as MZ could. Just a true King of his art!
Thanks for the info!
@@mvunit3 Of course mate. That's why i quoted "better". Bobby is monster with more common approach.
Oh that's awesome Jamie!
Very cool. I will have to look for anything by Plane English!
You have to out thus in context, that was around 1995. The first time i listened to parallels in college i was like damn, he has 3 hands because it is impossible to do what he is doing.
100% context is everything
Great video. Love Mark Zonder's drumming. The album "Parallels" is a must own in my opinion.....oh and he isn't hitting the tom rims...he is hitting Tigger pads that he has placed in various places around his drum kit. ..some are circle pads but the one in front of him is a t-shaped trigger pad.
All those odd sounds you heard are coming from those.
Thanks for the info Mark!
Zonder is an all time favorite for me. His style is so chill, complex and effortless
defiantly one of my favorites. Zonder is subtle and precise with his timing. would love to hear your take on the song monument. especially, the bridge instrumental. not only is the playing phenomenal imo but the overall orchestration for me is riveting
Andrew I really have enjoyed your vids & proud to be a subscriber for some time now,
Fates warning is a great band that has done well & made there own mark & sailed there musical ship very well as metal found itself evolving in many different directions throughout the 90's. Thanks again for a fantastic channel Sir!!
Yes! Mark Zonder is a fantastic drummer! 👍 Very creative and unique style. Has done some great work in other progressive rock/metal projects as well. Check out some of his later stuff too. Thanks, great video! 👍
I’m sure I’ll be looking at more of his stuff. Thanks David!
Mark Zonder....one of the greats!!!!!
AMAZING
I've been a fan of his drumming over 30 yrs.he is a big influence on my drumming.and he's still killing it.
That's awesome Gary
Mark Zonder is one of the most unique drummers out there. Check out Fates Warnings entire catalog. You will be astounded.
Can't wait to check out more!
Can’t wait to check out more!
Totally underrated drummer and band!
So good Steven!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Do check out their albums "Perfect Symmetry" and "Parallels" (and others).
Hands up to Mark Zonder.in my opinion he's the most complex drummer of all times.big fan of Mark Zonder and fates warning. You can also here his drumming with warlord. His band before joining fates.and also other projects he's done.Mark thunder child Zonder.hell yea.
Nice one Antonio
The drummer drives the band and Mark Zonder definitely drove Fates Warning during his tenure with them. Very cool to see him play his parts like this.
as soon as you said Come Together by the Beatles it instantly clicked for me. Great observation and analysis!
Thank you! 🙏
Mark Zonder is pure class! Amazing technique, musicallity, elegance, power, creativity... he has all, he is The Man! 😌☝️
I ask asked Mark on his yt channel. That electronic devices are called 'Spike' drum triggers
Those 12" hi hats really cut through
They were actually just some cymbals he put together as hats.
Well done
Zonder is the man!!
I like small hats despite current trends :)
Thanks for the input and info!
Mark is a fabulous drummer. Fates Warning is sooo under rated. A amazing band to Deep Dive!
Very under rated. I've seen them live 17 times dating back to 1988 at Dallas City limits when Ray could still hit the notes, to Arch/matheos in Houston recently
You should friend me maybe we could see a show together
Mark is one of my all time favorites, so busy & unpredictable !
Looks like a mini-China with those offbeat hits; I'd seen Zonder in a few ads for GMS drums and Sabian, this honestly is my first time hearing him play too. Pretty darn amazing.
Yeah I really dug it Todd 🥁🙌
met him back in 1989 real nice guy love his drumming
Great to hear 💪
So glad you did a Zonder/Fates video!!

And such a nice Guy too ❤️
(Btw.Mark Zonder shared this Video on his Facebook page!)
This Beatles hint...
Thank you so much for these very kind comments :)

Don't mention it!
You're welcome! ❤️
It's always a great pleasure watching these Reaction Videos.
Because sometimes I learn a lot by watching these Videos.
That's exactly is the main reason why I love that so much.
Even, when there is such a nice Guy like you reacting on Music Videos I've watched a thousand times or more.
Sometimes I realize I didn't payed enough attention on Videos I love to watch.
And right than I'm learning something completely new.
It's also a great pleasure watching People's reaction on Music I've listen to for so many Years.
And having exactly the same reaction I had so many years before.
This always is something like a Time Machine to me, ya know...
I just love it to see people enjoying the same Music I falled in love with many many years ago.
And finally I'm feeling young again.
I'm very thankful for that.
Because this is so very special to me.
Many Thanks again!❤️
Seema like Music is a never ending Journey.
I love great Drumming.
As much as I love great Vocals.
Fates Warning has that.
Their Live Shows they played here in Germany always was something very special.
I can't tell you...
They always delivered.
Favourite Live Band?
Definitely yes.
So finally...
But it would also be great to ask Mark himself what to do next.❤️
That would be amazing!❤️
Wouldn't it?
Just an Idea... ^^
@@AndrewRooneyDrums
I forgot to mention my ranking... ^^
1.) Fates Warning - APSoG
2.) Fates Warning - FWX
3.) Fates Warning - Disconnected
4.) Fates Warning - Still Life
5.) Fates Warning - Parallels
6.) Fates Warning - Inside Out
7.) Fates Warning - No Exit
8.) Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
I just about wore out this cd as well as well as their perfect symmetry album. I believe the rim hits were electronic on the album with effects added. Very cool and talented progressive band. I want to say they shared a practice space with dream theater in the early years. This was a great time for progressive rock between them and queensryche I was in listening heaven. Thanks for this one Andrew and to the person who requested it.
He's using a lot of pads and stuff. Badass hybrid kit player. Fates Warning always had cool rhythm sounds.
Need to check out more
Yep, has been requested before! Short while ago by myself amongst others.
I thought so!
Yesssss matey absolutely yes
Mark rocks
Awesome and inspiring drummer 🤘🏽🥁
Please add more videos from Mark with better drum quality on the sound he has a lot awesome drum videos 🍻
I will do more from him George!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums appreciate a it my friend
Thanks for the reaction videos and great work 🍻💪👋🏼
I discovered Marks drumming when he was in Warlord (Deliver Us - 1983). 🥁
My favorite drummer of all time!!
Fates Warning is just about the most under rated metal band. He almost sounds like he's so off beat at times that it makes sense. Dudes amazing.
Fates Warning are one of the top prog metal bands !
Great 👍
I love the fact that Mark Zonder looks like you, with hair! HAHAHAHA
Ooohhhh finally!! GREAT drummer!!
Yup! Love this
Mark also has a fondness for 13" hi hats which is what he's using here.
Partial to “The eleventh hour”, but Zonder anything is wonderful 👍🏻
Awesome Ken! 🥁🙌
Zonder… 👍😎👍 Definitely among the best Drummers EVER.!!
One of my all time favorite Drummers!! Check out his new band A-Z.....He is absolutely amazing on every damn track and the album is a must have!!!
The great stuff on Mark Zonder is, one could already hear back in '83 when he was with Warlord how exceptional his drumming is. Totally different from what regular metal drummers played back then. e.g. 'Aliens'. Hoglan, Zonder, Jarzombek - the top of the cream.
Awesome video! Love the t-shirt
He has a lot of electronic pads on the kit, so those are not rim clicks, they are tom sounds from a drum module
Right on!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums it's super cool, you can hear it much better on the albums obviously, but he'll have some electronic cymbal sounds as well. Super cool and interesting
Mark fuckin Zonder!!!! The magnificent artist of drums.
A great album to check out is A Pleasant Shade of Grey from Fates Warning
THANKS!
Saw them in Qc with Dream Theater , it was just an amazing concert!
🙌
IN the top middle of his kit, he's hitting a trigger device that we can't hear clearly here, it's in the PA. Loud boomy tom type sound
Late 90s sounds right to me too, I think that's a good guess.
Zonder kills it here but Alder is having a really bad night.

FW wouldn't be the same without Mark....... I first heard him play on this EP called "Deliver Us" by band named Warlord...... man, I wore the shit out of that record :D:D
Love Zonder since No Exit way back in 87/88 .. great drama!!
He didn't play on No Exit. That was Steve Zimmerman. The first record Mark recorded with Fates was Perfect Symmetry.
@@kevinmadden3396 My bad, yup, Zimmerman was the drummer.
