Try the Crossovers, that’s one of the strokes we designed this stick to handle. Also, every thing we design and the materials us d have a natural dynamic range. If any drummer exceeds that, then the result are what you can expect. It is up to a drummer to develop the skill sets to determine how best to play in a dynamic musical situation. Otherwise maybe play another instrument that has an amplifier and a volume control.

For an hour long video i think that's respectable
The felt on the mallets will last longer if you avoid touching them with your hands because the oils from your hands actually breaks down the felt.

I wanted to see him play with chop sticks.
I love that video! Nearly 20 years ago I bought my first pair of "Hot Rods". They lasted only a few weeks. The second pair was better and I found a way to repair them myself. I replaced the single broken rods. We had a rehearsal with a new guitar player and while all the others talked I repaired my Hot rods. The guy looked at me with big eyes like I was inventing my own Light Saber. Take care and greetings from Germany!

Suggestion for a future installment of a comparison like this, review them by category. So that as a viewer we go from category to category with all the variations of the "same type of stick" in sequence to compare them in an A/B test
Some of these make me glad I'm a Vic Firth player. No gimmicks, just the best friggin' drumsticks on the planet.

I think those crossover sticks are for reggae, when you want to rimclick almost everything, and the design will give you the sound of holding the stick upside down, a common technique by reggae drummers to enhance the sound of their rimclick.
Crossovers are a combined stick and bundled rod concept. We leave the skin on the bamboo rods so they are much stronger than standard rods. Because Crossovers are made on a stick platform, they are rimshot and cross-sticking friendly. We drill a hole in the end and insert and epoxy in the bundle of bamboo. Right t the base where the bamboo bundle is connected, there is ‘an enlarged area that is solid wood. This is the target zone when going onto the bell. The bell sound produced is just like a stick.The Crossover have a huge dynamic range. We have 7 models of Crossovers to cover just about anything!
I like how focusing on the sticks makes Jared come to his natural 'groove comfort zone'. I think you have a lesson with Benny Greb teaching us about the 'drummer's muscle' that keeps us turning towards the floor toms while playing a fill :D

With Felt Mallets as soon as the oils from your hand hit the felt that's when they start to break down!
I have large hands and have always been a Vic Firth 2B guy (danny carey signature is nice) but for the last few years I've really enjoyed using the VF Matt Garstka models. Lately though I tried some Vater 2Bs and fell in love again with what a heavier stick lets you do.
The first sticks should get a bonus rating for matching the drumset and your shirt Jared!

I feel like a lot of these would sound really good played on congas, maybe timbales, etc. Also wood blocks or jam blocks.

My personal favorite sticks to play with are the Promark ROCK 747 nylon tips....they’re very long and I love how durable and sturdy they are also!!!

I've been using Promark oak 2b with nylon tips on my ekit, recommended by my teacher. So far they've been pretty good at bouncing off the walls when they go flying out of my hands, not bad at all ;)
As a beginner, I haven't seen sticks like these lmao. That's awesome.
EDIT: I had to replay the mallet playing, that's some epic sounds that thing could make. Oh my God.

I've found that Vater grip tape wrapped from the butt of the stick to halfway point works just as good as mallets against a cymbal.

Cool review on the sticks...
I am learning how to play Timbales and for practice I use a heavy thicker wooden tip stick made by VIC ...very comfortable for practicing.
Then I have two more sets for the actual usage on the Timbales made by VIC ...no tip...exactly the ones that you kept is a two-tone color. I have 7/16, 5/8, 1/2 inch..don't like the feeling of plastic either. The sound is too dull.

I have no Earthly idea how I wound up on your video, but I’m sure glad I did. This video was fascinating. I’m not a drummer. The closest thing I got to drums was back in high school. I was in the Flag Corps. in the marching band. In parade formation, the Flag Corps. was right behind the drumline (great movie, by the way lol). When practicing for the halftime shows, to save the field for game day, we’d use the back end of the Senior parking lot. We’d get into parade formation outside the band room, and march to the Senior parking lot, the drumline playing a cadence. When we were marching through the Senior parking lot, the drumline set off the car alarms. LMAO It was just so damn hilarious. At least us chicks in the Flag Corps. had to smile all the frickin’ time. So there is that. lol Anyhow, thank you so very much for the entertainment. ❤🥁❤

I’m digging the ninja tips and crossover II’s both by headhunters. I’d like to try those out for church.
So far the best sticks I've used are Promark, Mike Portnoy signature 420x with activegrip. They are very durable and even when my hands start to get sweaty they have tons of grip

I’m currently using Vic firth freestyle series and promark oak 747.
I suggest trying Drumart's softshot, they're like in between a stick and an hot rod. It's made of wood and you have a big sound out of toms and great definition on cymbals with a medium/low volume
Promark, active grip, 7A, 5A, 5B, all wood tip. Stick choice depends on the music.
Quick question about the active grip, do they cause any blistering ot hot spots at the fulcrum? I've used ProMark grip tape, and it caused a blister. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!
@@jackehlers2072 no they don't. I find the active grip treatment works really well, especially for me as I have a very light grip and used to drop sticks like it was my job.

Pro tip on the brush playing is to slow down as much as possible with the actual brushing motion. A lot of people I see look like they are trying to whip cream. Start as slow as you can and see if you can get the sound you are going for. Increasing in speed should be used for dynamics whilst pushing harder into the batter should be used for accenting specific beats within the rhythm. You are gently massaging the drum so keep it relaxed and don't try to create too much friction.

The one stick I use which isn't on here is the Vic Firth Hickory American Classic Rock. They're thicker and a bit heavier stick than most. Great power and attack. They last forever and pretty good for the price.

I love my 5A Neil Peart signature sticks, been using them for a few years now and they are great and light weight but I chew through them fast. Still a great pair of sticks and they are fairly cheap so I stick with them. Side note also very versatile sticks, I am able to play in different gigs with different styles and they just work.
first time i saw the pro mark tubes was 1997, modern drummer festival. Paul Wertico play his drumset with some kind of cloth over the kit. So the sound of the tubes was more evident

I love the clear difference of opinion coming from the post editor. He clearly said a different rating at the end of some of the later sticks, but while the timing of the overlay is still perfectly on point the value shown is not what he said.
One of the more unique sticks I’ve ever used…and loved…Hornet 5B. Crazy ergos and what a feel. The company is gone and I only have my one pair for dropouts. I was thinking of going over to the Amish and have them cut a few pair out. LOL

Neat video. So far I use either Vic Firth 2B or Rock sticks for practice (build strength and coordination with something bigger than I prefer playing on). But I'd definitely include some retractable brushes when I get a kit again (I only have a practice pad for now). Maybe the dowels if I found myself in a small venue or church setting. And honestly, as someone who is also figuring out making a video game, some of the special effects sticks... probably won't be something I buy, if I'm honest. I can probably find good substitutes without spending some absurd amounts of cash per few minutes of audio recording.
Gotta say, I love these videos. Get a good idea of some of the unique products that are available that we might not know is out there. I was however, put off a little bit by the way you played one pair of the hotrods. Intended to be a low volume set but you played them like a sledgehammer, and rated them a 4? Probably last forever if used as intended. I wouldn't put a cast iron skillet in the microwave, but I guess it can be done!
He was just trying to put them at the word of the advertising. It looks ridiculous to play hot rod and blastick type sticks so hard, not to mention how much they cost to begin with.

It’s a Bridge System. There is a video out by Peavey explaining why they made their drums the way they did. I am so happy to own one of their drumsets, they’re pretty great sounding!

Do peavy drums have a badge on the shells? How old are they? I remember seeing these in the 1990s but not really since then
@@tbiffard As far as I know - not every Radial set is badged. They also made a cheap "International II" series, but It's nothing special. Terrible hardware. Shells are bearable, at most.
Wish I was more like you able to say "I'm never gonna use these" but I'm the kinda guy that's more like "I'm keeping these too because you never know" lol.
...and end up not using it. SMH

The best regular drumstick I have ever used is the relatively new Diamondback Drumstick. I use a 5A but I would love it if you would try them and provide your own viewpoint. Previously I had been a beta tester and then user of the ProMark Fire stick but the #diamondbackdrumsticks are superior to any I have used. While I enjoyed the video, it seems primarily just a infomercial for Headhunters gear.
At one point Vic Firth Rock "tree trunks" were my default, haha, and I didn't even really play rock. I eventually ended up and stuck with Vater 1A. 5B will do the trick if 1A are not immediately available but I like the extra length on 1A's. I don't like sticks that are particularly light or short.
If you haven't yet, TRY HEADHUNTERS! You will find a model that is so fun adn won't be disappointed
Zildjian cymbal mallets are extremely durable I've had mine for years and have used them regularly. They're still in perfect condition.
The tubz are great to keep your brushes protected in your bag
