    Ha ha... I'm making the sound of the castanets with my heels ! I was thinking too much about the pride of the Spanish dancer. Intonation issues, rosin not sticking much, some notes missing... but many added for the spirit :)

    I didn't realize how lively baroque music could sound as I've only really "read" through it on my own! Do you pick and choose what ornaments you use for each individual performance or do you just stick with your favorites? I've heard there is some very slight improvisation with baroque music and was curious.

    • @andrewsappel
      @andrewsappel  3 года назад +18

      HI. Thanks for your nice and appreciative note. Ill answer for the ensemble. We know that Corelli was a master elaborator and when his solo violin sonatas were published in Holland and in England they were published with the ornaments that Corelli added to simple and lyrical adagios and andantes. We aren't sure that these ornaments were really his but they are contemporary and give us an idea as to how elaborate Italian ornamentation was for violinists. I think that most good baroque players use these as a good guide post, playing them or inventing their own ornaments that seem in the ball park with them. We also have examples of other great violinists of the time printing their own ornaments to the Corelli sonatas. Each violinist brings his own character and art to the pieces. In this set of variations, Corelli does not add the elaborations he brings to the other sonatas. What you hear as ornaments are Olivier's spontaneous additions...always a delight to the continuo section from performance to performance.

    Could someone please explain, why this version is in C# minor while the original Corelli scores are written in D minor? I have found several records on RUclips in C# minor and several in D minor. At the same time all Vivaldi versions are in D minor. Most scores that I have found on the internet for Corelli's version are in D minor. Sometimes I can find G minor version but still very confused where C# version comes from. Of course you can tune half step down any string instrument though not sure about key instruments.

    • @andrewsappel
      @andrewsappel  9 дней назад +1

      This is an honest mistake based on your gift of perfect pitch. Our edition, from the original, is in D minor but pitch in Rome was lower than modern pitch of A=440. We were probably playing at A=404. Pitch varied greatly in the past. Venice was very high...Paris and Berlin quite low...Bach worked with old organs tuned high (A=460) while when he used French woodwinds they were tuned very low (A=390). The best book on this is THE STORY OF A by Bruce Haynes. In the meanwhile, stick to your D minor Folia at whatever pitch. Best regards.

    • @ArtemSopin
      @ArtemSopin 9 дней назад

      @@andrewsappel To be honest I just wanted to use standard Corelli's scores in d minor and learn by ear improvisation pieces from your version when I though my guitar was out of tune, then I realized it was ok but if I do half step down. It is how my confusion started, haha! Thank you so much for the explanation and the book reference! It is real eye opener for me. I have never though that the pitch could have changed over the years. In electric guitar world, some guitar players prefer half step down tuning. I have always though about it as using E flat instead of E but probably proper way to think about it is that they use different pitch. That might sound obvious for you but for me it is a new world and indeed now I have read they are turning "standard A=440 to approx. A=415. Thank you one more time for the answer! Your performance and improvisations are amazing!

    La Folia est elle une oeuvre de Corelli ou bien de Vivaldi ? les Américains choisissent volontiers le premier, mais les Européens restent fidèles au prêtre roux

      @andrewsappel  5 месяцев назад

      Folia is a bass line and harmonic progression that was set by countless composers. Corelli's, published in 1700 is a cornerstone of Baroque chamber and violin music. Vivaldi's came a few years later...but there are variations on Folia by Marais, d'Anglebert, Couperin, CPE Bach, Liszt, up to Bernstein's America from West Side Story which is a take on Folia. It is a theorbo--which is a lute with the added long bass strings that are simply tuned to the low notes you want and never stopped with the fingers as the lute part of the instrument is. However this reminds me of a funny story I heard from a fine viola da gambist. She had played a concert for music lovers who were not particularly savvy about original instruments and after the concert was over a member of the audience came up to her and asked if that was a piano she was playing. She told me that under such questioning, the best policy was to be agreeable and she said yes.
