I have played both of those cymbals and it's impossible to totally copy Kenny's old K. That thing is beautiful. It feels great to play and sounds great. His new Bounce ride though feels and sounds good. Cymbals need a lot of years to settle and take on a personality. The old K sounds better because it is drier since it's older. Everyone has their own opinion on what they like though.
I agree 100%. I don't normally like rides that are made to sound dry when new (turk, unlathed ect). But when they naturally become dry through playing, age,hand grease and life that's when you get a keeper. Burying them in the ground and stuff like that does NOT get the magic. I'm starting to believe more and more that cymbals need to be played in and i think too many companies are trying to make them sound like that NEW by overhamering ect.
@BleepYouTwo I don't see or hear the resemblance but he could probably kick your ass like Mike Tyson....I was at the Vanguard one night watching him with Johnny Griffin and my friend and I went up ti him afterward and Kenny talked to us for a very long time...What a great guy and musician and historian...I never forget it...He could of went home but instead he gave us a lot of his time...I hope I run into him again...One of the greats..
Nice cymbals but to be honest, the old one sounds better and it sounds like my 21" istanbul agop mel lewis ride with 2 rivets. Maybe it depends on where the mics are placed.
There are so many alleged 50's/60's era copies being marketed now. To my ears, the rides on those old recordings are high-pitched, sparkling, sometimes shrill, with plenty of cutting high/mid resonant tones (eg think joe morello on Take 5) yet the modern jazz ride 'copies' tend to be too dark, low-pitched, with undertones that just won't audibly cut (probably due to a too-flat cymbal profile).
A lot of old A Zildjian cymbals were being used on those records, but there have also been a lot of old K cymbals with darker tones, that’s what these are trying to emulate
@vova47 O.K. the Part 3 of this video confirmed my guess (I am not a drummer) that cymbal indeed matures and mellows with playing time and age. Anyway Kenny sounds great on all of them.
@TOTALITARIO999 I absolutely agree. The old one just sounds so much like Mel ! The new one is nice though and maybe with time it will sound more like the old one. I am assuming the sound of cymbal changes and matures the more one plays it but don't know it for a fact...
I own a very light 60s Zildjian Avedis 21" with rivets that comes closer to that old K than the Bounce Ride. I guess after ten years that Bounce Ride will have lost some of those silvery overtones and will speak just perfectly! It shouldn`t be cleaned or polished of course, the patina will make it a little throaty...these cymbals all age beautifully when treated right and are worth every dime spent!
BEST RIDE IN THE WORLD, DOT. (DARK RIDES ARE THE BEST AND ONLY ZILDIAN GOT THAT DARK SOUND FROM SULTAN'S AGES: THEY ARE THE REAL ORIGINAL THING (SEE ELVIN WITH COLTRANE: HE CREATED THE K CONSTANTINOPLE!)).
To me it sounds like way more high end on the new cymbal. Having said that, let me add that I've seen Kenny play with Bill Charlap and I chatted with him after the show. He's an outstanding musician and a very nice person. He wasn't using a high tom but he got plenty of music out of a snare, bass, and floor tom.

Kenny is freaking amazing. Check him out on Bill Charlaps records.
Love, love, love, Kenny Washington. Great demo.

too many angry/jealous musicians here... K Wash is the man!
How do you get one with rivets in it?
But also, what are those hats??

@zachrhea3 yeah the old one definately sounds alot better...
Agreed!
The old one sounds exact like the New k custom special dry ride 21” to me
Sound like two different cymbals
@TOTALITARIO999 agree

Plastic tips with lighter sticks speak for me best.

Sounds pretty close.
@BleepYouTwo haha yea
I'll take the original cymbal, cracks and all.
I wish they'd use better mics.
kwash - it goes to eleven :-)
The original cracked one is a lot better. A LOT.
I don't think they sound alike, The old one is definately better...
As a child I used to bang a dustbin lid that sounded slightly better than these. But what do I know!!!
