This is probably the greatest cymbal demo on you tube Tobias! And I've seen a lot. Your execution is insanely consistent and you wrote the perfect four bar phrase to show every kind of hit on a ride cymbal. We'll done and thank you for taking the time to do this.
Really appreciate having such a massive back-to-back-to-back comparison of all of these rides, especially with consistent volume levels of the kit and beat. That helps give an impression for each cymbal's sound, and how loud it is in context to the other rides. Videos that showcase just one ride make it hard to hear that comparison to other rides to know if one is bigger, louder, softer, drier, brighter, darker, etc.

It's not gunna change the sound of the cymbal really all that much at all. The only thing hes doing by cranking it down is adding more attack and killing the overtones which make it incredibly difficult to get an accurate EQ that reflects each cymbal properly. In studio it's fine to push your flets down a bit more, and most smaller studios will make you do it because otherwise the cymbals (especially the ride) wash out the entire mix. You keep your felts loose when playing live because you need your cymbals to cut through the rest of the mix and you don't have to worry about overtones at all. I think it's also because he's playing with a rack that obviously holds more cymbals and doesn't want them colliding with one another and he's reduced the amount of cymbals for this video to show the ride off better. That may just be speculation, but overall I really don't think he's altering the tone in any meaningful way for most peoples ears. It might matter more for high end recordings where certain frequencies need to be more strictly monitored, but I don't think for a youtube videos purpose that it makes any audible difference.
@@Southboundpachyderm tightening down cymbals like that is the no. 1 reason they break on the bell. I think you mislabeled one cymbal. As far as I know there is no 22" K Custom Special Dry Ride... only a crash. I think it was actually the High Definition Ride.
What a great video I stumbled on! I'm a K guy but some of them took me by surprise as versatile crashes too... the 20" A Crash/Ride, 22" Avedis, and 22" K Renaissance were my favs as "crashable" rides.
Red Head Drummer I can attest that the 21” K Custom Hybrid Ride sounds amazing in person. 22” K Custom Medium Ride and 20” K Heavy Ride are also amazing. I might pick up a K Custom Ride for that sick bell. The K Custom Hybrid is the same cymbal just with the edge lathed down for some crashability and less dry stick sound.
Damn they must have thinned out the Rock Ride since the redesign in 2013. I have a 1996 and you cannot Crash on it. It give a belly gong sound. Great stick definition and awesome bell....but no crash.
Cool my 21" rock and 20" K custom rides were my faves here as they cut the mosts which is why I own both. I also have a 22" k light ride and a 22" Constantinople thin that is the most beautiful ride I have ever heard but not for rock of course like the first two I mentioned.
14:18 This K Overhammered thing is just phenomenal in my book. Discrete yet present, arty with smooth complex overtones and the most important thing, the bell is set back like a Rolls Royce turning signal not like a tin alarm. Less is more. If only had a big more ping definition... 12:26 Honorable mention: Addresses the ping definition of the Overhammered K but it`s not quite up there in style, although very close.
Tobias, thank you. This video is an excellent resources for drummers to hear a number of ride cymbals, as even in stores, one doesn't have access to this many. Thank you. Without this, I don't know what would I have done. I hope to buy the A Mega Bell Ride someday, though I can't afford it now. BMM
Tobias, thank you for the excellent comparison, and it helps a great deal for many of us who can't test play these cymbals ourselves. I am thinking about buying a new ride that has a more distinct "ping" sound. I have a 21 in. Zildjian Rock ride that is over 30+ years old. It's still good, but the district ping is not as strong as I'd like. I think the one that I like is the 21 in. A Mega Bell Ride. It's "ping" is quite strong. I can't believe some of these rides are close to, if not more than, 3 bills each! I know the Mega Bell ride retails for about $325, not including tax and shipping. Thank you for the comparisons! Brendan
Top 4 favorites: 4. K Custom Ride 20'' 3. K Custom Hybrid rides (any size) 2. K rides (any size) 1. A Sweet Ride (any size) I'm a Paiste guy, but I actually like Zildjian rides to be honest. Nevertheless, the Paiste rides are still my top favorite
I’m more of a fan of the niche cymbals towards the end of the video. I have a k high definition 22” and I love it even though pretty much everyone I know hates it. That’s the way it is, but if a cymbal makes you play differently then that is totally worth it
nice work, lot of work, very useful for allowing folks to hear the differences between models, even if a cymbal is played with a genre they wouldn't usually be played in.
Richard Costello can it crash well?? I was curious about that exact ride. Bout to order one Wednesday but I really want it to crash well. Otherwise I’ll be going with the special dry 22” crash.
Benjamin Boyfriend it’s crashable, to and extent. It’s kind of like a special dry crash, but less punchy. But overall it’s a decent crash, amazing ride and bell though.
K Customs are in a different league. Numerous top drummers use the K custom rides. Carter Beauford, Gavin Harrison, Larnell Lewis to name a few legends.
I own every one of these cymbals and then some with my superior drummer software and Roland digital ride. ;-) Still, nothing beats the real thing.... A sweet ride 23" @2:19, K Dark Medium 22" @6:02, K custom 22" Dark Ride @8:26 and a couple others. Love em!
What an amazing company and what a great video. 400 years and so many tones! I’m a guitar player who just got sucked into a ride cymbal rabbit hole. In general, I like the sound of the K Custom special dry rides the best 21, 22 and 23. And the K. Constantinople medium high thin lows rides. Can someone explain what that even means?
Thanks for making a great video, about half a million bucks of a setup. Glad to know that the hundred bucks I spent on my PAISTE Alpha heavy ride 20 was well spent as I still like it more than these. Amazing how some of the real expensive k customs look and sound like a garbage can lid, apart from having a decent bell sound.
If had two rides set up on two stands, you could "push and pop", and use a "stack" protocol, while you are playing one cymbal, a stage hand can be swapping the other one over! Hence you could achieve this all in one take. Extra points for knocking the cymbal off the stand when youre done with the passage.
Thanks bro for taking the time to make this video for all of us… Fir my money I love the regular 20 inch k ride the best… it’s got the perfect amount of ping and wash and probably on of the best bell sounds imo….
I did a blind listen and marked down all the ones I liked the best. Giving them all a score out of ten. And here is what I liked the most. A Sweet Ride 22" Avedis 20", 21", and 22" (though the 20 sounded the best by far and the 21" was my least favorite) A Custom Sizzle Ride 20" (I think, I forgot to write down the size) K Ride 20” 7 K Light Ride 20” and 24" K Crash Ride 20” Brilliant The first two on that list are by far my favorites. I absolutely hated all the flat rides, and the one with the giant bell. And I didn't like most of the Constantinople as much as I thought I would. Although I am sure in a Jazz context my list would be completely the opposite of what I picked here. All the dark K stuff and the hammered Constantinople would probably be my favorite. I like my rock stuff to be pretty bright, pretty sticky, and pretty washy. Jazz stuff sounds best DARK and a little bit dryer I think.
I'm 67 years old and have never found my dream cymbal.....I've come close.......I don't like anything over 20" ......I don't like a ton of wash......but like a dry ping.....and mostly love a great bell........any suggestions? I've had luck with some.....PAISTE 20" signature heavy dark ride and used to love the Zildjian earth ride. I hated it at first after buying it (Newpaper ads back then)......stuck it a closet. Months later I pulled it out and thought I'd gig with it one night before I sold it ...just to get my money back out of it....I have to say.....I had other drummers come up during the break to ask what kind of ride I was using! They loved it! Taught me that it's not always what your ears pick up at close range but how it projects..........
Thanks so much for appreciating what I do! Don't forget to subscribe & please THUMBS UP the video!

I think you mislabeled one cymbal. As far as I know there is no 22" K Custom Special Dry Ride... only a crash. I think it was actually the High Definition Ride.
I like the more staccato sounds. Get out of the way quick. Amazing line of products this company has. So much options. Great video! Thanks.
What a great video I stumbled on! I'm a K guy but some of them took me by surprise as versatile crashes too... the 20" A Crash/Ride, 22" Avedis, and 22" K Renaissance were my favs as "crashable" rides.
2:03
5:32
7:25
7:48
8:13
These were the best sounding cymbals.
Red Head Drummer
Yes the sweet ride does sound good
7:25 agreed here. My fave
EastBay MauiBoy same
I agree with the last 2
Red Head Drummer I can attest that the 21” K Custom Hybrid Ride sounds amazing in person. 22” K Custom Medium Ride and 20” K Heavy Ride are also amazing. I might pick up a K Custom Ride for that sick bell. The K Custom Hybrid is the same cymbal just with the edge lathed down for some crashability and less dry stick sound.
Loved this! I'm going 21" A Sweet Ride for this setting. :)
Arnav Gairola nice!
Damn they must have thinned out the Rock Ride since the redesign in 2013. I have a 1996 and you cannot Crash on it. It give a belly gong sound. Great stick definition and awesome bell....but no crash.
Jonathan Wheeler you're edgier than a scalpel my guy.
I picked up a 20” K custom medium ride for $175@ the Memphis Drum Shop. Awesome cymbal. Very versatile.
I find the bells on the Avedis Rides to be unique. They seem to have a bit of a changing sound when playing them, which is cool.
One helluva job. Thank you for this, it surely was a lot of hard work.
Cool my 21" rock and 20" K custom rides were my faves here as they cut the mosts which is why I own both. I also have a 22" k light ride and a 22" Constantinople thin that is the most beautiful ride I have ever heard but not for rock of course like the first two I mentioned.
What an excellent comparison best on RUclips! Although I was disappointed not to hear a K Sweet 21 inch ride. Looking at buying that one.
Thanks for putting this altogether! Very well done.
That 22" A Medium Ride sounds superb!
Dab King94 I agree, it’s the most vanilla of the bunch and is one of my favorites.
I've had one for almost 10 years and it can take a good beating. I use it as a crash ride.
I like the 20" Hybrid Ride, it has a nice bell and very crashable.
Ditto
0:27 A Med 22”
0:43 A Med 24”
4:10 A Custom Med 22”
8:10 K Custom Hybrid 21”
The A custom ping ride sounds gorgeous , I have the A ping ride
14:18 This K Overhammered thing is just phenomenal in my book. Discrete yet present, arty with smooth complex overtones and the most important thing, the bell is set back like a Rolls Royce turning signal not like a tin alarm. Less is more. If only had a big more ping definition...
12:26 Honorable mention: Addresses the ping definition of the Overhammered K but it`s not quite up there in style, although very close.
It’s a crazy sound. It has practically no attack and crashes like a china.
A custom 22" ping ride will be my favorite
1:30 that 21” A Rock Ride nails it for me 🤘🏻🥁
Tobias, thank you. This video is an excellent resources for drummers to hear a number of ride cymbals, as even in stores, one doesn't have access to this many. Thank you. Without this, I don't know what would I have done. I hope to buy the A Mega Bell Ride someday, though I can't afford it now. BMM
Thanks for the help,I need a new ride,I don't want to break or crack my 50's Zildjian Turkish ride
Stellar video man! Thank you so much for making it!
Nice job, excellent video, greetings from Argentina!
Brendan

I'm a Paiste guy, but I actually like Zildjian rides to be honest. Nevertheless, the Paiste rides are still my top favorite
Literally how do you even play that consistently goddamn lol. Great job!
Tobias, these video's are so valueble dude! thank you !
The K Custom Hybrids are sensational!! 🎶🎶🎶
so how in the hell does one person get ahold of 50+ rides?? that in itself is majorly impressive, but seriously where'd they all come from??
He is sponsored by Zildjian. I think they give him the rides for the video. Forgive my English.
Right??
@@mjmartinez3454
I dunno. Around $420 ea average probably, =$21,000 worth of cymbals. I don't know if they gave them all to him
Thanks Tobias! I learned a lot about the tones of the different groups and sizes.
Amazing video. I was expecting the K custom dark 20". Unfortunately you jumped directly to the 22". Could you put it please?
Great video.....thx for posting. Ignore the negative replies. This was very helpful.
Great comparison, thank you. I know there was "jazz" version of this, but can't find it anymore.. Is it down? Thanks
Man.. I Can Listen To This All Day Long!
You're doing god's work here man, thank you for this
This video is simply:" Brilliant!!" Thank you, sir.
GREAT video!!! Thank you for taking the time and effort to put this together! Very useful information! (Liked 👍🏻 and subscribed). Cheers!
Just purchased a 22’ k custom high definition aka “22’ special dry” love that ride
Awesome! 20 Constantinople Medium thin low
Can’t wait to see my bandmates’ faces when I pull up to a jazz gig with the ride at 4:59 😂
Where can I Finder the comparition with K flat ride?
I'll take 20' A Crash/Ride. Because the sound was really heavy
K. Custom Ride, and K. Custom Session were really nice.
Those two were my favorites!
This is an awesome video that taught me a valuable lesson!
*Zildjian has way too many ride cymbals!* lol
I know right 😂
K Customs are in a different league.
No, they just are darker and dryer cymbals which plenty of people like. So it's not suprising they are costly.
I have a hand hammered brass cymbal that sounds dry like some of them, I guess not as great as a b20 but still not bad for brass, hehe..
Ugh zildjian... so many rides. Lots of work put in to this video, thank you
I wish there was a 21" k custom ride
They have a 21 inch k custom hybrid ride tho
If had two rides set up on two stands, you could "push and pop", and use a "stack" protocol, while you are playing one cymbal, a stage hand can be swapping the other one over! Hence you could achieve this all in one take. Extra points for knocking the cymbal off the stand when youre done with the passage.
To these days my favourite rides ever are the 22" soultone custom brilliant and the old 22" ufip ping ride. I have had many rides as well...
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DRUM SOUND
Great video! Thank you for sharing. I didnt see a zildjian K custom medium ride...
Fantastic! Looking forward to that jazz version. Thanks a lot!
Thanks bro for taking the time to make this video for all of us… Fir my money I love the regular 20 inch k ride the best… it’s got the perfect amount of ping and wash and probably on of the best bell sounds imo….
K custom 20" is the best 07:21
Das ist ein Video was jeder brauchen kann! 😁
Thank you so much for this vid man. I'm trying to figure out what ride I need , doom stoner Sabbathy sounding stuff. 22 sweet I'm thinking
I did a blind listen and marked down all the ones I liked the best. Giving them all a score out of ten. And here is what I liked the most.
A Sweet Ride 22"
Avedis 20", 21", and 22" (though the 20 sounded the best by far and the 21" was my least favorite)
A Custom Sizzle Ride 20" (I think, I forgot to write down the size)
K Ride 20”
7 K Light Ride 20” and 24"
K Crash Ride 20” Brilliant
The first two on that list are by far my favorites.
Months later I pulled it out and
thought I'd gig with it one night before I sold it ...just to get my money back out of it....I have to say.....I had other drummers come up during the break to ask what kind of ride I was using! They loved it! Taught me that it's not always what your ears pick up at close range but how it projects..........
Paiste dark energy mark I or II
This video deserves MAJOR kudos.
A Custom Medium Ride 20", K Custom 22" Ride, and maybe the A Custom Ping 22" ( brings back the 90s..lol).
Really really nice 👍 so consistent !
I can’t decide! I have it narrowed down to K Custom session ride, K Custom hybrid 21, K Sweet ride and A sweet ride.
I didn’t see a 21” K Custom Organic ride. Could you please redo this video and include it?
Thanks
These videos are so usefull! Thanks!!
