It makes sense that the Relativity would be rather small. It's a very specialized as opposed to a multi-mission ship, meant to preform a single function, police the timeline, and coupled with increased miniaturization of technology along increased automation reducing crew size.
Temporal Transporters would let you bean through the gaps in a ship's shield pulses. Or, possibly, to the area in spacetime where there wasn't a ship there, then to when there was.
Perhaps the dedication plaque on the Relativity says that quote was from EM Rauch because it is from a timestream where Rauch said it. Something happened to the timestream, and now Einstein says that quote, and it was just not worth repairing the timestream for reasons.
MOVIE era time ships exist. Starfleet commissioned a few of them , based on the Connie II design with just a saucer section and isolated warp nacelles. similar to a light cruiser, but in a different engine config.
I think the smaller size of the Relativity makes sense, a number of missions wont require the ship, just its ability to send people back through time and retrieve them again. With the level of automation there must be, a small, more specialised mission focused crew seems logical. You have to wonder why a ship would be required in some circumstances, as they can scan all time and space a temporal starbase or two may be cheaper than a mobile platform. From a cost point of view, maybe there are a number of bases and just a few mobile starships for missions requiring them may be a way to go.
Temporal warp core? So what if you create a small burst of energy, then use that energy to create a small jump back in time inside the core, which basically means the burst happens over and over and over infinitely, then use what ever left over energy to power the ship?
Was disappointed in the Eaglemoss model that it did not include the Starfleet markings on this particular model, but once again another awesome ship from the Voyager series.
They have slipstream by the end of the 24th Century so I'm sure by that time, Warp would be seen as too slow. Drexler also said that the Enterprise J could "fold space" so this probably has some advanced version of that.
I agree with the captain, I think the holomatrix is more advanced than a simple holodeck because the holograms inside the holodeck are nothing more than photons and forcefields, in otherwords, hyper realistic and interactive 3D projects...but remember the Voyager episode "hope and fear", and how The Dauntless didnt use holograms..but particle synthisis instead. I think thats the holomatrix works, actually creating and/or reprogramning the atoms in the room to become whatever temporal location was scaned.
Maybe, probably more based on really theory that if we slam photons together just right they will make electrons...add in build shield/deflector tech to keep them in place Oh wait forgot about this one being upgraded...you're probably right on this one. Old one electrons, this one matter
I always thought the Relativity looked mostly like the 1986 concept F-19 Stealth Fighter model kit by Testors , and the 1988 G.I. Joe X-19 Phantom Stealth Fighter by Hasbo.
If I remember correctly, one of the Star Trek novels dealt with a future Federation and Starfleet (towards the end of the novel) and talked about 'SideWarp' as they exited our galaxy to explore parallel dimensions.
+lrdofstrms Star Trek Federation. A fantastic novel, if not completely invalidated by subsequent canon ST works like First Contact and Enterprise. Written by the Reeves-Stevenses, aka the ones who really wrote the Shatner books
A temporal ship probably has a whole separate dedicated computer with a lot of fine tuning control systems that cost a real brick of currency. They may also use a HUGE amount of antimatter as well... An expensive ship that is expensive to operate.
watchthe1369 Maybe, being a timeship, they know where there are caches of antimatter in the past/future. Or ships that are about to go down, where they can go in, freeze time long enough to take some of their reserves.
I wish there was more information on the Temporal Dreadnought on Star Trek Online there is not much information about it beyond the game specs I can find.
I'd love to see your thoughts on The Relativity's older brother... The Chronos class Temporal Dreadnought... It's my current ship in STO and it's torpedo spread is utterly devastating.
Should've had 3D controls! Remember that DS9 episode where the crew brings the Defiant out of mothballs to help Jake save his dad? I think it was Nog who said "How did we ever operate a ship without 3D controls?" And Bashir says "We always seemed to manage somehow." Point being, it would've made sense if the Relativity had that technology which seemed to exist centuries ago.
interesting i originally had a very different feel and thoughts about this ship. it's a lot smaller than I suspected those are some miss leading windows
agreed with everything you said - the ship looks beautiful and enigmatic - however the interior wasn't up to the same standard, the interior designers had kept everything familiar and recognisable - the desks/TCARs displays, workstations and transporter pads within the bridge module - replicating the same layouts from ENT to TOS to TNG & VOY. You'd expect walking into a ship from the 29th Century would have been bewildering, with (to our eyes) an unintelligible - almost magical? - command/control interface - such that we'd never be able to guess at how to operate it - as if the captain of a medieval warship walked onto the bridge of nuclear submarine .
+Trekyards FYI. The one in STO, U.S.S. Pastak, is the closest thing to a series ship recently. It is the center for the 50th anniversary story with the temporal front/temporal cold war for the next several months.
Smaller ships = Smaller crews Smaller crews = less people that can get drunk and talk about the future/past less people talking = less problems down the line with people that might have heard or The Temporal agency, most likely being a "small in numbers, big in results" kind of group wouldn't want any more people on a ship than required, lest it take up valuable manpower. Just my two cents.
Ok guys, when you said that 'G' does not make sense considering this is supposedly the eighth ship to bear the name "Relativity', I immediately knew that you forgot something important about Star Trek. Here is what I figured out, and when you read it you just might understand: Since it is the eighth ship to bear the name 'Relativity', you need to think about the naming conventions of Starfleet in the Star Trek Universe. Take 'Enterprise' as an example; and I'm not including the NX-01, only NCC-1701. The first of those was just NCC-170. "No bloody A, B, C, or D!" as Scotty famously said in his appearance in TNG. All subsequent ships bearing the name and the number were given letters that followed the number; hence 'Enterprise 1701-A' was a renamed and refitted Constitution class ship that replaced the 'Enterprise NCC-1701'. All ship bearing the name after that also bore the next letter in the suffix of the number '1701'. Likewise, the 'Relativity' would follow the same Starfleet naming convention, with the first to bear the name having no letter designation; thusly the 'Relativity NCV-474439-G' would be the eighth ship to bear the name. The number of the ship will be one more than the letter designation's numeric alphabetical position Hopefully you can now understand. Cheers!
i always thought the holomatrix worked like a tardis in that it's confined within a small space but projects as much volume as needed for whatever simulation is appropriate. These things could be inside a small closet and would make sense given the size of the ship. Plus we already saw that timeships had that technology in enterprise. I know it was 31st century, but there's no reason to assume that technology originated in that time.
+Dot Matrix I've been wanting to watch this movie for years, and finally watched it tonight in preparation for the upcoming Fleetyards not knowing it'd be referenced in this episode. What a good time that was, really. I can see why it's so loved
You would have to figure the relativity is a specialty ship so it's design may be much different then a regular ship of the 29th century. I would Like to see a scout, cruiser or battleship design of the 29th century that isn't time capable.
Great Video. You asked about why the ‘USS Relativity’ didn’t deal with Nero? Nero failed to alter the timeline and instead created a new timeline. As the prime universe is unaffected by the events that occur in the JJ verse there would have been no reason for them to intervene in this situation. I am assuming that the temporal accords/prime directive would prevent them interfering with events that occur within alternate timelines. However, what I would like to know is what involvement they had, if any, in the temporal cold war. It would have been nice to have seen the ‘USS Relativity’ again in the Enterprise series.
Hi and thanks for your Trekyards videos, I've watched and enjoyed most of them! One thing I would like to mention, though, is that Cmdr Cockings' voice is always quieter and I always struggle to make out what he's saying. I'm from the UK by the way so it's not an accent thing! I know he has a softer voice but is there any chance of raising his feed volume a little in future vids? I often miss what he says, but can clearly hear everyone else.
+Tim Harrison I bring both of our audio tracks to a -12 DB to ensure that the audio doesn't blow out or anything. There will be elements where we are quieter and louder and some people have a problem with volume but most are fine with it, different speakers, different headphones etc. Thanks though!
The Relativity has always somewhat reminded me of this Transformers toy : www.tfu.info/2001/Vehicon/SpyStreak/spystreak.htm Just as the Aeon looks like a Starcom Shadow Parasite Fighter (in it's closed form) : www.toyarchive.com/STAForSale/NEW2001+/Starcom/ShadowParasite1a.jpg
I always thought that the best usage of the timeship relativity would be to create an ideal version of the timeline where earth was more advanced and the Federation was more resilient! for example they could have stopped world war three and saved the great cities of the world and prevented that earth quake that devastated the west coast of America! given humanity certain tech earlier to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Great ship but it's still not a TARDIS Mark 8 which or can get much smaller and go many more places!!! And still if you have a Time Lord not mess with temporal space!!!. Oh and its original size is a size of a small planet
This episode could also be turned into a J.J. Abrahms movie starring William Shatner, as well as Chris Pile as Captain's " James T. Kirk ". Much like J.J.S.T. 2 gave us 2 " Spock's " !
I'am sorry for my bitch fest here, but this is not what I am use to as being a Starfleet ship. It looks like some sort of Aquatic ship....but I must realize this is in the far future, and it's a time repair type ship...so therefore the ship looks awesome 😊☺
Too bad the show was limited so much by it's budget. They basically reused the same old bridge design with the same type of consoles and all that. Super advanced 29th century timeships should have crazy holographic displays or just be linked directly to the crew's minds. Seems pretty silly that it's almost exactly the same as the primitive starships from 500 years before.
+billyboyjennings Kind of...STM called the control interfaces TCARS instead of LCARS. The crew could control them by either touching the console or waving a hand over some controls...it's a little more advanced at least.
weird ship for star trek as star trek seemed to prefer ships that looked like they where incredibly impractical. This is the first ship that looks remotely like it could fly and looked like a stealth bomber suggesting the writer wanted to give you a deja vue kinda feel to all those triangle UFO sightings you might have had when living near a military air force base trying to give the fiction some potential backstory realism.
this is the most alien federation ship ive ever seen. i wonder if the folks at voy r like, hmmm yeah we should have kept it more federation looking. i mean i was ok with how it looked cuz it was in the 29th century but now cuz of the enterprise j and the ships of the 32nd century from discovery, looking more like federation ships, i just dont know
Saying the ship is too advanced to be threathened because its a 29th century temporal starship is being a bit naive, you do realize that there would be contemporary starship /temporal ships that it might have to go up against, think that silly Temporal Time War from early season of Enterprise. You really think that nothing from it own time would be able to be a threat?
6:10 I figured that they made use of particle synthesis at this point.
I am very excited about this episode.
It makes sense that the Relativity would be rather small. It's a very specialized as opposed to a multi-mission ship, meant to preform a single function, police the timeline, and coupled with increased miniaturization of technology along increased automation reducing crew size.

As far as the holo-emitters, the Doctor was had his own. That time has the equivalent of it being like an X-Box or a laptop for personal use.
Perhaps the dedication plaque on the Relativity says that quote was from EM Rauch because it is from a timestream where Rauch said it. Something happened to the timestream, and now Einstein says that quote, and it was just not worth repairing the timestream for reasons.
The Relativity is my favorit Ship in the entire Star Trek Universe ! By far.
looks far cooler than the lollipop dish designs
I have this ship on my main toon on STO.
I also have used the Mirror Universe 29th Century Timeship.
Which is also badass.
MOVIE era time ships exist. Starfleet commissioned a few of them , based on the Connie II design with just a saucer section and isolated warp nacelles. similar to a light cruiser, but in a different engine config.

Motherbrain Jr Or maybe they've embraced the work of Tesla.
Was disappointed in the Eaglemoss model that it did not include the Starfleet markings on this particular model, but once again another awesome ship from the Voyager series.
Michael Loar Thought mine was the only one that ended up that way.
Anyone else think this ship design, while cool looking, is basically taken from the 1990s GI JOE toy Phantom X-19?
They have slipstream by the end of the 24th Century so I'm sure by that time, Warp would be seen as too slow.
Drexler also said that the Enterprise J could "fold space" so this probably has some advanced version of that.

Aldebrian Whiskey - good stuff!
You didnt say temporal enough - Im still relativity-ly sober ;-)
Wait till part 2 comes out next week then watch both back to back.
relativativtubly sobuber....... yeah bolld wine wooooeeew

Size is Relative in Starfleet's future. Consider that at least one future ship shown in Trek Lore, was bigger on the inside.
Double-Barrelled Simian
Same size. Just used a few more spatial dimensions to use the available space more efficiently.
I wish there was more information on the Temporal Dreadnought on Star Trek Online there is not much information about it beyond the game specs I can find.
The Aeon reminds me of the Shadow Force Parasite from STARCOM.
You've just gotta love the the Tholians!
I was looking forward to this one!
May be the Relativity's advanced holodecks now produce smells and tastes to add to the realism?
By green stuff if you mean the green alcoholic beverage from the next generation episode relics I think you'll find it's aldebaran whiskey.
So at 11:30, why is the ship's name spelled incorrectly on the CGI model?
+Paul Costa Fascinating! They spelled it wrong on the studio CG model! Never noticed wow!
+power543 And this is why we can't have HD...
+Shawn McDonald Well not really...thats a very easy thing to re-texture and fix! Would take minutes
I do play Star Trek Online I have the Wells, Mobius, Paradox and the Aeon all of them can equip the Tipler Cylinder and the Manheim Device.
I'd also reckon that temporal ships require specialized training.
What means NCV in the registration?
What is the max warp speed for this ship
How would you design a 29th century star ship that if next 2017 series was set in that time period?
Very awesome video.
Aldebran Whiskey, on the rocks.
The fore and aft views look like the "whale" shape, seen in the back in time sequence, in ST4:TVY.
Tholians. Little thieves always stealing other people's ships.
Jonathan Fairchild Tholians... the Jawas of Trek.
I'd love to see your thoughts on The Relativity's older brother... The Chronos class Temporal Dreadnought... It's my current ship in STO and it's torpedo spread is utterly devastating.
I'm going to buy this on Friday, but I haven't seen the V_____r ep, so I'm boning up.
No floating nacelles? Old school!
It's because the first ship doesn't have a letter. E.g. NCC 1701 is followed by NCC 1701-A
Should've had 3D controls!
+Brian Dellinger They've gone to 4D controls or better by the 29th century. We just can't perceive them via our limited televised interfaces.
This always reminded me of stealth fighter concept designs before we were shown what the real one looked like.
+Mark Bernero I just about to post exactly this. More than anything else it reminds me of an F-19 in space.
+Shawn McDonald I can't believe I had a model of Relativity in 1987! It had all of its markings too, unlike the one available now!
What is that series or movie you have been showing. I saw seven of nine in it, and now I want to watch it because I'm curious.
interesting i originally had a very different feel and thoughts about this ship. it's a lot smaller than I suspected those are some miss leading windows

Yes. I do know the real name of the Aldebrian Whiskey or "green stuff". But it's what we like to called a joke. 😉

11:40 Who made that model? They misspelled "Relativity". For shame! ;)
Shadowbat from Starcom the Aeon reminds of, my bad.
Not me just watching this episode today 😂

No one else had GI Joe toys growing up? This ship extremely similar to X19 Phantom
I might be drunk thanks to the temporal drinking game, but I can't unsee the spelling mistake on the render. Or I've forgotten how to spell.
Isn't it about time Cmndr Cockings got a spot for his name on the Trekyards LCARS border?

Yeah, instead of Daniels, it could have been Ducaine. Daniels was kind of flakey
Where was the Temporal police when Nero showed up?
Ouch! The drinking game shouldn't be played with my morning coffee.

Looks like a Babylon 5 ship..... Mimbari White Star.
I've onnly just started watchingg aands I'm aalready ddrrrrrrumk...

It's just a jump, to the left.
the Relitivility looks like a stretched out SR-71 Blackbird. interesting.
Can detect any time changes, except Kelvin
Captain - Nero is to us as Eddington is to The Sisko.
you cant have a higher energy output than a matter/antimatter reaction because the entire mass gets converted into energy.
finally a cool designed Federation ship...never liked those lollipop dish designs

Temporal warp core powered by a caged baby universe.

The romulan warbird I think was powered by an artificial singularity

I noticed the misspelling as well...lol
