    Always loved Jupiter station! Would be one of the places that I personally would love to reside in the in sector 001.

    Interesting and informative! My first thought with the 'cosmic energy collector' was that it could have been lifted from the side of Babylon5.

    Yes the station doesn't have phaser strips but it might have phase cannons. In Enterprise, the phase cannons came out of the bottom of the ship and you guys did say that the station made the cannons so it might have 2 or 3 underneath each the saucer :)

    One of my favorite space station designs in Star Trek! And to hear from the designer himself that it is meant to be build out of decommissioned starship hulls makes me pretty happy. It somehow shows that, even with replicator technology and insane efficient energy sources, the federation still has a pretty tight ressource budget to work with, so that it actually makes sense to use old hulls for stations and so on.
    As far as weapons go, I like to imagine that the lines in the show, telling us it has no armaments, only refer to its designation under normal circumstances. This station is purely used for research, so starfleet command doesn't classify it as a military asset, therefore, officially there are no weapons on board. But that doesn't mean that none could be activated if needed.

    The stacking of discs looks kind of cool, it kind of looks like something from a power station.

    I simply love the concept of having the well proven and tested saucer design for crew living quarters and workshops, then simply copy and paste for as many people that will be occupying it as needed.
    So you can have them stacked as tall as you want and then have as many stacks in clusters as needed.
    If you get tired of the conventional saucer design then since outer space has zero gravity or wind resistance you can go with any shape or size your heart desires.
    Of course in sci-fi movies there are no negative effects of living in outer space or even low orbits but in real life there are literally tons of adverse effects of living in space and all of them are cumulative and life threatening.
    Starting with muscle atrophy, your eyeballs lose their shape resulting of loss of vision, you can begin to grow taller as there is no gravity to push against, and there is the constant exposure to high levels of very hard radiation from space and cme blasts from the sun which will immediately cook you like a hot dog in a microwave oven for 15 minutes!
    So yeah it's fun to imagine living in a space station,Trek style, but in reality you really don't want to even set foot on the rocket to get up there.
    If you are an astronaut in real life, you are immediately classified as Uninsurable.

    I like that it DOESN'T try to look cool. As Rick said, "industrial." It looks like a real-world station, not an architect's or designer's wet dream.

    I'd prefer to think those saucer sections are custom built for that design of station... We've never seen a class of ship with that saucer type, I think star fleet would just design the station from scratch...

    I Hypothesize that The core of the TNG Jupiter station (The center piece with the Cosmic collectors that runs perpendicular to the Saucer connectors) was the original Jupiter Station. It may have had docking facilities where the saucers are now and a different power generator. Early 24th century there would have been a bunch of ship classes that we hadn't seen (Like ambassador until it's major appearance in TNG) that may have been reaching the end of their life span/ being decommissioned. Instead of throwing away the saucers, some engineers got drunk at Utopia Planitia, saw one of these ships (Seeing double or even triple) and thought it would be a great Idea for the Jupiter Station Retrofit project.
    My hypothosis / headcannon. And nothing you can do will take the drunk engineers away.

    Great job as usual Captain and Commander. Always great when you have the designer on the show. Just had an idea, what if you had a designer on talking about a ship/station he didn't create. What they would change. But be a nice twist. Cannot wait for next weeks episodes.

    Guys, I think you do pretty awesome work. As a future video as you start running out of ships, maybe you could look into some of the aspects of the Federation and other space nations that we don't see too much of on the shows. One of the things I've always been curious of was Sol system itself. In TNG it's obviously a hub of interstellar commerce, yet there is almost no orbital activity when we see it. Earth is supposed to be a defensive hardpoint of the entire Federation, yet when the Borg first head in Earth defenses consist of about 3 small fighters. And then there's the moon. Luna is supposed to be home to several hundred million people in THG area, and Riker even describes Lake Armstrong, but it looks like the same Lunar surface I see when I look out the window; it's supposed to be terraformed.

    There should be torp tubes on Jupiter Station just to test new probe designs.
    "Hey, got this new idea for a propulsion system for a probe! Let's test it...oh wait, no tubes to shoot it out of on this station."

    • @FLAME4564
      @FLAME4564 8 лет назад +1

      +gwensdad2003 Torpedo tubes yes. but probbly not Propulsion. Since its already fitting that its locked in place via orbit of Jupiter itself and using Jupiter's huge gravity to keep it in place and moving.

    • @markplott4820
      @markplott4820 8 лет назад +2

      +FLAME4564 fixed tubes not good on a orbiting facility, photon torpedo turrets are needed, reduces the number of tubes required to cover 360@ flank. IE - DS9 had photon turrets that were deployable.

    I always thought of those saucers as being all from the same class of ship, perhaps a failed class that was just a disaster when at warp. The saucers all look newer, and no 24th century ship had that saucer.

    Can't Jupiter Station simply be multi-purpose? If I recall the Federation in TNG is all about multi-mission platforms ala the Galaxy-class.

    • @FLAME4564
      @FLAME4564 8 лет назад +1

      +Mariah Sinclair (Mariahsyn) I most likely speculate that it was. I mean to me Those saucers if nobodies noticed are actualy reminiciant of the Ambassadore class.
      But those actualy are De commissioned Galaxy Class Saucers.
      But yeah Mabey the Station itself could have been a multi purpose type. I mean common since it would have labas aswell as military training stuff and mabey even holo decks.
      Since the EMH designer Dr Zimmerman was most likely in one of those saucers were his lab would have been.

    • @VERTHASAMVS
      @VERTHASAMVS 8 лет назад +2

      +FLAME4564 The Galaxy Class saucers are oblong while Jupiter Station's saucers are perfectly round. So unless they shaved off the sides of the saucers before attaching them, these are not Galaxy Class Saucers.

    • @MariahSyn
      @MariahSyn 8 лет назад +4

      I never actually said that they were Galaxy-class, what I meant is this was during the TNG era where multi-purpose was a big deal in Federation design.

    hmmm Orbiting Jupiter in the radiation belts? Perhaps the designers of Jupiter station probbly found a way to get around and solve the issues related to Jupiter's radiation belts with special tech designed to deflect radation off of it.

    • @markplott4820
      @markplott4820 8 лет назад +5

      +FLAME4564 or better, harness the radiation to create space energy.

    I think the telling factor of if it has weapons or not is if its run by Starfleet or if its a civilian installation. I think if its civilian it probably wouldnt have weapons

    • @markplott4820
      @markplott4820 8 лет назад

      +Skyla Jade Forster (Sky) true that civilian research facility doing military research are not armed but they do have heavy security. so, I think Juipter station has very strong shields as well as other Starfleet security features like Transport inhibitors and Biogenic EM Fields in addition to MACOS running the security detail there.

    I was raised Jupiter Station. actually it was Saturn station.

  • @Carwyn.Morris
    @Carwyn.Morris 8 лет назад +7

    why would it need to be armed? Its a research station located in the heart of federation space one of the most peaceful places. As far as I know the International Space Station is a research platform and to my knowledge that doesn't have weapons.

    • @MariahSyn
      @MariahSyn 8 лет назад +3

      +Carwyn Morris I'd like to point to the feature film Gravity. What if there was a hunk of space junk heading their direction? Even basic deflector shields and meteor disintegration would probably be a good idea. Not to mention the ISS is governed by a series of treaties keeping weapons out of space. =)

      +Carwyn Morris Good question.
      I mean we've seen stations like DS9 armed to the teeth with phasers and photon torpedo launchers aswell as Earth Spacedock with phaser cannons and phaser banks. It would be nice to see Jupiter Station armed. But that would have meant exploring more concepts for the producers aswell as Rick himself.

    • @Carwyn.Morris
      @Carwyn.Morris 8 лет назад

      DS9 is a Cardassian station in the middle of deep space. As for SpaceDock I can find nothing that says it had any weapons at all I did find one on Memory Beta that said "it was originally designed to be equipped with 40 massive phaser banks, but the United Earth government objected to the presence of more weapons in Earth's orbit[citation needed]. A compromise was eventually reached and it was constructed weaponless, relying on high-powered deflectors." But concerning Jupiter Station I can't think of a good reason why it would need weapons.

    • @FLAME4564
      @FLAME4564 8 лет назад

      Thats because most of Earth Spacedock has is not active. And the Phaser Cannons are most likely hidden in a special section housed at the very top of the station. And yes your right. When DS9 was used by Cardassians it was formaly known as Terrok Nor. Deep Space 9 is actualy the starfleet name though. The Torpedoes and Phasers were ofc installed and made operational with the help of starfleet. Since that in itself has become a multi purpose multi practical station. Not to mention it has 6 thrusters to help keep its orbit stable around Bajor.

  • @technopoptart

  • @markplott4820
    @markplott4820 8 лет назад

    I dislike the space between the saucers, too long, fragile, prefer them shorter connections. Prefer station to be armed in case no starship in Quadrant to come to aid. Torps and phasers but not mega phasers. I also assume a small contingent of MACOS to run the security like Navy ships have marine patrols onboard. and a small contigent of fighter craft or killer bees.I would be willing to accept extremely strong shields in lieu of actual weapons. if they had a Destroyer class starship stationed at Juipiter station. or better yet a Defiant class escort production version manned by MACOS.
