This is true to how Deckard Cain described him in Diablo III: Book of Cain. He claimed that Baal is just as cunning and nefarious as his siblings, quite capable of using strategy and deception to further his goals. Yet, a lot of people find him predictably destructive simply due to being outwardly brash and reckless

yeah that was awesome. the dark wanderer was THE symbol of diablo 2. throughout the marketing and trailers, this dude was shown front and centre. in the game itself, the player character literally follows him throughout the entire story. hes even on the damn cover of the game.
so having baal look kind of like a new "dark wanderer" for us to hunt, as a teaser for act 5, was really really well done. shows how much thought they put into it. makes the original game and xpac really flow together, and not feel like 2 entirely different things.

It honestly might have. It's implied that Baal had been looking for awhile. Even assuming that he left to find Marius right after opening the gateway, you don't arrive in Harrogath until Baal had conquered almost all the barbarian lands, there's a pretty sizeable time window inbetween act 4 and 5. I took to interpret it that you just relaxed for a few years, and then later on heard about the ruckus on Mt Arreat and showed up, way too late in typical diablo fashion.

As I was lucky enough to play D2 before expansion came out I must say this was a perfect ending for the game.
Although LoD brought a lot of improvements. The whole Act V just didn't have the same feel, story was little weird all the sudden we were supposed to care about some world stone we never heard before. Baal turned from his great mummy/demon look in D2 into that crab legged monstrosity. For me Act V was never something I looked for playing since game clearly reached it's climax in hellish Act IV. Although game wasn't ruined by the expansion by any means, I wish they kept Baal for D3 and went with different direction.

Angels and Demons in the Diablo Universe don't have "Free Will". Humanity, that comes from both Angel and Demon has. Free will and that that makes us Human (a.i. more complete) is the main Theme of Diablo, as established by the Sin War Trilogy and D3. So in here, Baal is making Marius give the stone of his free will judgement, which is a symbolism that humanity is a slave to Evil's influence. A moral victory on top of a physical victory for Baal.
However, I personally don't think that Theme was invented at the time of D2, so you can look at this like Dracula asking Randfiled to enter his home "of his free will", which goes to the same theme of "humanity accepting evil willingly"

I have to say, this one was better in the original solely due to Marius. Compare the original one to this, and you see how much more affected by Baal's Soulstone he was. He looks not only old, but also ragged and decrepit. He is twitchy, his hands move irregularly, he is constantly weeping and close to doubling over. He was a shattered person, where as this one just kind of has a sad face and doesn't emote enough.

I cannot understand why people like Marius. He seems like a total coward and a fool.
Firstly he follows the Wanderer. Clearly the Wanderer is not a good guy so why follow him at all? I can pass it up as maybe the Wanderer could have killed him otherwise so he decided to obey him in order to survive. Okay. I can pass that.
But then he frees Baal because Baal asked him to? Why help the forces of Evil like that? Because he was afraid? Tyrael was clearly winning so why screw Heaven and Humanity by freeing the imprisoned evil?
And then for some reason Tyrael asks the same weak old man that clearly is a fool and a coward to go to Hell and destroy the Soulstone? WHY? Not only is Marius weak but he is a coward as well. Even if he tries it, there are two Primal Evils he needs to pass by unnoticed, even if he does that by some miracle in Hell he will meet waves and waves of demons.
I am new to Diablo and understand little but this baffles me so much.
