Just fyi, i took my encode plus to home depot and they rekeyed it for $5. It took less than 10 minutes. My original key was a schlage key which he said it had to be.
Great video. I just rekeyed my Schlage Encode Plus and it worked like a champ. Ordered the same Amazon kit as recommended in the video. Very straight forward installation, just pay attention. I bought one originally at a large chain home improvement store, the employee there wasn't very careful, dropping parts on the floor, I believe he didn't get the washer in the back as the key had to be pulled out a bit to work. I returned it before leaving the store as they didn't have a second one in stock. Ordered it online cheaper, used this video, and I'm back in business. Thank you Rey G.
Thanks for this. I rekeyed two Encode Plus locks with your help. I do wish you had made a bigger point about using the insert to keep the top pins and springs from falling out though. I missed your comment on that and thought the insert was mostly to push the cylinder out so when I saw it was coming out easily, I pulled out the rest of the way and dropped the top pins and springs. Then I remembered seeing that somewhere before. They are a pain to get back in! But overall, thank you for a useful video. I’ll be checking out your channel.
Rey thanks for the HomeKit goodness vid, I was trying to figure out how to do this as I wanted one master key for all my locks. As usual you take of the heavy lifting for me thanks.
Wow, thank you so much for this! I was thinking of getting the Level, but was hesitant to ask my landlord if I could change out the lock, as he's kind of old fashioned)) Now I don't have to!
Same. My issue is that my locks have a gold finish and the Level lock+ doesn’t seem to come in gold finish. Does anyone know if there’s a way around that?
You can swap out the cylinder with any compatible Schlage cylinder. Before, falling for the hysteria, know that both locks received the highest rating for residential locks, and even standard deadbolts can be picked by a skilled locksmith.
@@ReyG_HKSH Can you please do a video on this (i.e. replace it with something known to be safer... like a Schlage Primus cylinder). Considering the original LPL video that exposed this weakness now has nearly million hits plus those on 9to5mac channel. This can potentially help your channel to reach wider audience :) Thanks!
Great video. I have a related question. If I have a Schlage B560 deadbolt with a 6-pin, S123 cylinder, can I simply change out the cylinder of an Encode Plus and use the one from the B560?
Thank you for this video. Unfortunately, amazon has kits with the top pin sizing of 0.235 inches but I need the Schlage top pin sizing of 0.237 inches to rekey my Schlage Encode Plus and Level Lock. This is what I need for it: 2B pin = .195in QTY 2; 3B pin = .210in QTY 1; 7B pin = .270in QTY 2; 1T pin = .237in QTY 3; 3T pin = .165in QTY 2. Any idea where else can I find these?
@@ReyG_HKSH, I was about to ask the same question as I am swapping out a Schlage deadbolt with a Level Lock+ when it arrives. If I can simply swap the cylinders versus having to rekey the Level cylinder, that will save some time and possibly some frustration!
remember to change top pins if you are replacing bottom to a longer/smaller. top 1: plug 0-3, top 2: plug 4-6, top 3: plug 7-9. They have to match! For example, if both pins are small, the spring will push both down inside of the cylinder and it will not protect your lock anymore!
Thank you. Step by step video made an otherwise confusing process pretty simple. Additionally, is the a way to change the outer section of the Level Lock+ to a gold finish as the ones in Level lock touch?
So glad you found this video useful. It’s likely that Level will release these in other finishes on the future. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! 🙏
Did the Schlage key way have any security pins in it or was it the same straight pins that was in the non-Schlage lock that you showed the original pins were straight pins?
Hey Rey, thank you for the videos. I am still on the fence about smart locks. I am worried if they are really secure. Also, what happens with the entry doorknob? If I have a smart lock for my deadbolt then do I just keep the entry doorknob unlocked? Is there any products available to support smark locks for entry doorknobs?
For the doors that I have these installed on, the deadbolts are accompanied with lever type door handles instead of knobs, and these do not have a locking mechanism. I’m not aware of any HomeKit compatible smart locks for doorknobs as I would like one for interior doors for rooms. Thanks for watching! 🙏
You don't need a lock on your knob. Doesn't really make your door more secure. 90% of your door's security is in the deadbolt. Invest in a high quality deadbolt and security strike, and then use a "passage" lever or knob. If you're really worried about security, you can upgrade the cylinder on your deadbolt to a more secure keyway like Schlage's S123, or even something restricted. Electronic deadbolts are NOT more secure than standard mechanical locks. But they can be more convenient. In the security world there's a saying, "You can have security or convenience." Electronic deadbolts are for sure more convenient, but you open an additional mode for bypassing. A mechanical lock can only be bypassed mechanically. A smart lock (like the two in this video) can be bypassed two ways; mechanically and electronically. In the end, it's not more secure, but it is convenient and probably no worse than what you have on your door right now and what 99% of Americans have on their doors. Hope that helps!
Great video Rey. I just installed the Schlage Encode Plus and really like it. I was successful in installing the Encode Plus on my HomeKit + setting up the Homekey on my phone + apple watch. I also installed the Schlage app on my iphone. What I can't do is set up my wife or son's iphone with the HomeKey for the Encode Plus? When I go into Home Kit, Settings, People, it doesn't give me any place to invite people? Family member's have to be logged into iCloud (each my family members has their own apple ID; not shared apple ID). I understand that multiple home keys will work regardless if everyone has a different apple ID. How do you get multiple people in your home to have HomeKey on their phones? I should not have to have a HomePod Hub, right?
It should have prompted them to add Home Key automatically when the lock was set up. Go into the Home app on their (compatible - iPhone SE 2 and up) iPhones, under Home settings > their name, scroll down check locks. There should be an option to “show Home Key in Wallet.”
Wish there would be a HomeKey lock that was keyless already. Too much hassle to rekey for something I will rarely use. The 9 volt battery terminal on the front is a far better backup option when the main batteries go dry.
I believe Yale was on the list of manufacturers that intend to support HomeKey. I’ve never been one to carry a 9 volt battery around and having a manual way to unlock a deadbolt is ideal in my usage. Thanks for watching! 🙏
This is a good video but I am having a hard time seeing what exactly you’re putting the pin thing in. The blurriness is extremely distracting. I can’t see anything. Do you have a newer video on this?
I’m a locksmith. Just a friendly heads up, you’re taking way too many steps. Once the back cap is exposed, you can unscrew the cap, put your key in, turn it and use follower to remove the plug
Thanks so much! I bought the kit you recommended and rekeyed 3 locks! I really appreciate it :)

Is this possible if I lost the key that fits the lock?
Is the M1S hub support matter?
Will they also update the Level Bolt to have the same capabilities for Apple keys?

Yes.

Can you swap cylinders? Can you replace the Schlage Encode Plus cylinder with a Kwikset smartkey cylinder (sc1 keyway)?
I don’t have any kwikset cylinders handy but if it’s the identical shape, size, and mechanism, it might work.

At least I now know you can put a better lock cylinder in. Lock picking lawyer picked the level lock in about 10 seconds.
Well that’s kinda his thing. Locksmiths can do the same for just about any residential lock.

Which is why you have a backup dog and/or gun. Break in at your own peril.
