Thank you for the simple and clean presentation. I appreciated the fact that you didn’t tell me all about yourself or show me how to take the deadbolt out of the box.
Great tutorial video on changing the deadbolt. Soooo much easier than doing door knobs and levers. I changed my deadbolt in about 15 min. Probably took this long because I kept pausing the video to perform that step instead of watching the entire video and going along at the same time. Thanks a bunch!
Excellent video! I've used my relay kit several times in the past with very frustrating results. I found this video this time around and it couldn't have been easier.
hi so I have used this video to attempt to rekey locks about 6 times. 2 of those times I followed this video and jammed the cylinder. The other 4 I did not listen to the video at all key step and it made all the difference. The problem arises when I am sliding the cylinder back on to the housing. If you slide it above those mini half holes and then try to turn the key, the pins get stuck in the half hole and you’ve completely jammed your cylinder. Instead, I slid the cylinder on the other side, without the mini holes, then just manually turned them back to the proper full holes. Has anyone else run into this issue? Am I doing something wrong or is this video incorrect?
Is this possible to do without the original key? like, would i have access to the cylinder and then re-pin the cylinder to a new key, WITHOUT having the original key to turn and unlock the cylindar?
anyway to do this with out the original key? I have 4 dead bolts on one of my buildings that I lost the keys too but i have another main Schlage key id like to rekey them too so all my locks will be one key. i love schlage and just figure i need to buy new ones.
Thank you for this video, it is very well done. I just an Encode deadbolt for my front door, and a lever keyed entry, and all my other doors are just standard Schlage deadbolts and keyed entry knobs, and the keys all look like the same blanks, so if I'm following this correctly, with this kit, I should easily be able to key all of mine to one of my keys, correct? Seems that way.
I have tried to find 4 sets of Schlage locks door & deadbolt all keyed the same as I lost my keys. I have one Schlage lock set on a door I recently replaced. So for the other 3 I’m going to get sets or individuals & rekey them. This looks like the cats meow.
Your video was very informative logical clear and useful. Is it possible to replace the 5 pin tumbler with a 6 pin tumbler as there seems to be enough space. I have a schlage sense BE479 and after a master key change to six pins I want to be able to replace the 5 pin cylinder with a 6 pin cylinder. If possible is additional hardware needed or other customization?
A quick question I couldn’t find an answer to on the Schlage website. I am hoping to rekey a Schlage encode, smart deadbolt and a Schlage B 60N deadbolt to use this same key. Is the five pin cylinder on the Encode deadbolt the same or similar to the five pin cylinder used in the B60N deadbolt? Would they use the same pins if I bought a rekey kit online to rekey these cylinders? A vendor on eBay is telling me they use different pins, but he doesn’t sound that sure of himself. Many thanks for your help. Q2: Can a 6-pin key be used with a 5-pin lock?
Is there a way to recover the lock if you do not rekey it properly? The pins were flush and everything went back to get her now but now none of the keys work
But you can’t take the cylinder apart unless the key is in the unlocked position, correct? So you would need to lock pick the lock in order to get the cylinder apart. So may need a locksmith. I’m not the pro here though... but you may find it difficult to remove the cylinder with no key.
What isn't shown are the springs and tops pins the follower keeps in place that line up over each pin chamber in the plug. If the follower is pulled out these parts will escape and will need to be replaced one at a time with tweezers. Do not let the follower come out without the plug to take it's place or you will be unhappy
Nice video. Question. If my kids lost the original keys how do I rekey to a new Schlage lock key? (The section in the video where you have to turn the cylinder to about 3 oclock position with the original key to take the cylinder out. The original pair of keys the kids lost. So I'm going to replace the other locks with new Schlage locks but would like to keep the original electronic key pad and rekey to the new locks. Thank you.
You have to pick it with a lock pick. Can be found on Amazon or ebay. I inherited 5 code locks with no keys. Took me 10 mins to pick but finally got it.
Reassembling the nut with the tailpiece + c-washer is much more of a pain without the special wrench shown. The video shows removing the nut with the small screwdriver and also using the wrench, but only shows reassembly using the wrench. Given this is the hardest part of the whole process (IMHO), it would have been helpful to show that. Lacking the wrench, having three hands would doubtless require a lot less patience than one must normally expend to get the nut back on while depressing the pin and keeping the tailpiece from flopping around like it was specifically designed to make doing so difficult.
I did all the steps and had all flush pins, reinserted the plug but was unable to get the key out. What was I doing wrong? Are all the top pins suppose to be the same length? I wasn't the one that removed the pins and springs but trying to put it back together. The key was broken off on inside the plug.
Thank you for the simple and clean presentation. I appreciated the fact that you didn’t tell me all about yourself or show me how to take the deadbolt out of the box.
You're welcome
For real
There is absolutely no way this video could get any better. Clear, precise with an explanation of each step. Brilliant.
Phenomenal instruction and clear demonstration. You just gave me the confidence to re-key three of my deadbolts. Many thanks, and best regards.
Off to Home Depot I go to attempt to rekey our 2 deadbolts. This video was great and gave me the confidence to do it myself.
Thank you. After watching this video I am excited to try. Thank You
Thanks for a great how to video on this and staying so focused on the task instead of getting off track
No worries!

Thanks for sharing your experience!
Great demonstration on how to perform this task with such clear tutorial. Very appreciated!
Thank you for this detailed video. I was reluctant to try but your instructions gave me all the confidence I need to tackle this.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome sauce! So good to see manufactures helping out in the DIY world!
Our pleasure!
Great informative presentation. You spoke in very easy to understand instructions. Thank you
Excellent and informative video. I did not understand how it would be possible to rekey a lock, but now I understand how it's done! Thank you.
Wonderfully useful explanation. Thank you!
Awesome video. Rekeyed all my locks in no time. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Very Clean Presentation. Thanks
Excellent video! I've used my relay kit several times in the past with very frustrating results. I found this video this time around and it couldn't have been easier.
Thank you, you just answered all my questions.
Wow you are a great teacher!
Thank you for the quick and simple tutorial. Helped out a ton
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for sharing your expertise.

How do you remove the core without having the key to rotate the cylinder?
Has to be picked, I bought a cheap picking kit from ebay, still cheaper then paying a locksmith
Excellent Video!! Thanks so much for posting this!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
God bless you for sharing!
Nice video!
Did the security pin come in place? I missed!

I did the first deadbolt fine, the second I'm unable to turn the key. Is there a way to remove the cylinder?
All the pins fell out thanks to my following the instructions on the back out the rekey kit. How do I replace them?

Does the rekeying kit contain the keys?

Does Schlage offer an "extension collar" or escussion plate for a dead bolt installation where the hole in the door was cut out slightly too large ?
What kind of lubricant if any would you recommend for a deadbolt ?

Q2: Can a 6-pin key be used with a 5-pin lock?
Thanks, old man! 💪🏻👴🏻
You bet!
Great video for rekeying, you should show how to add anti bump pins, security pins and anti drill pins would be great.
Great suggestions, noted
Is it possible to rekey a double key deadbolt?
What is you need to make a different key..
Awesome video! What's the part number for the solid brass 5-pin cylinder? I've never been a big fan of the zamac cylinders used in most B60 products.
Is there a way to recover the lock if you do not rekey it properly? The pins were flush and everything went back to get her now but now none of the keys work
I would re-check that the proper pins were used.
If the key don't work or turn how can I make it to work so I can re key it
Can this method, or something similar, be used if you no longer have a key for the deadbolt?
I don’t believe so. May need a locksmith for that one.
Yes, once you take the cylinder apart you can pin it to a new key.
But you can’t take the cylinder apart unless the key is in the unlocked position, correct? So you would need to lock pick the lock in order to get the cylinder apart. So may need a locksmith. I’m not the pro here though... but you may find it difficult to remove the cylinder with no key.
thank you for your responses!

Where do you get a new key to rekey your locks to?
I have the same question 😅
Very informative...
Well done.

Bart, good comments. We do recommend using the proper tools to complete these tasks.
Not that hard with a screwdriver. Put it in a bench vice if you needed an extra hand, not necessary actually.
Thank you!
What to do when you dont have the key !!
What a mission
I tried this using the same style lock and follower, but I could not get the housing past the threads onto the follower.
Had to skip to the end so I could finish rekeying a customers key I hate keying Schlage locks kwiset is way easier
Everything fell out 😭
Am I the only person who pronounces it “Shlog”?
10 minutes of commercials. I figured it out myself before the commercials were fininshed.
Would the lock still work without the Retaining pin?

Top pins should be the same. Did you wiggle the key in a bit? Also make sure you picked the correct bottom pins for perfect shear line
