I just bought the same rekeying kit from Amazon, but I'm curious about the new key which looks like exactly the same as the one in the website. Can I use another new key with these pins?
What terrible bitting on that new key! LOL That was a great explanation. I thought it would be much harder to re-key locks. It seems so easy thanks to your video. Thanks for your insightful content! That kit is pretty awesome too, especially one geared towards average consumers. So well-prepared.
What a great video. I have 3 doors in my rental, w/deadbolts, cost me 50 bucks last time to have them rekeyed. Never again, thanks to you. Awesome!!! Question. How do I know if the follower will fit my Schlage lock, or are they all the same diameter?
As long as you are working on door locks it should be close enough. It is when you get to smaller cylinders like a padlock where you need a smaller one
Comments by purchasers of these kits note that the keys provided in these kits are cut similarly (and bitting is not aggressive) making the “Re keyed” locks easier to pick. Would appreciate your thoughts on that. Also, we have a Schlage deadbolt and are purchasing more. Will be watching more of your videos to learn how we can rekey the new locks to the existing key (want to use Re-key kits that do not include the keys). Thank you for your videos!
I would say for anyone with an interest in locks I would just buy the key pins and get a code cut key to your desire, however, for a basic instillation for someone not looking to hire a locksmith it is not an unreasonable thing to buy
@@joanna0988 It's commonly done for car locks too. Either re-key the replacement to match existing, or replace them all with the same lock/key combination.
When you buy a lock at the store often several packages are all keyed the same for convenience so if two people buy the same lock from the same shelf they could have both locks potentially be keyed the same.
I'm moving into my first home at the end of May, should I see if the seller knows what brand of lock they have before hand? So I can buy the right kit and change them on day one
Wiser is a different key way and also uses different length pins. This would not work. You could buy the tens that go to a Weiser lock and use universal pins. The packages usually come with about 144 four pins so you would probably have way more than you would need. Check out CLK Supplies
This was a good video. I give the rekey set a 4/5. I'd have given it a 5/5 because it genuinely did work in just a few minutes on the first try, but the little tweezers they gave were complete garbage. Fortunately I had other options. the follower was also not very good. It was slightly too snug and I had to apply more force than should have been necessary to get it through the cylinder. It worked, but not super easily. All in all though for less than 10 bucks I paid at the hardware store I now have matching locks on my front door and garage. It came with 3 keys but I think it had enough pins to do 4 or 5 locks. I only needed 2.
That's hilarious. They might be using the same bitting for every single one of those kits! Would explain why the instructions are so specific, in terms of the color order of the pins. Hmm..
@@ginobean737 I read a reply to a question about this on a site selling the kit. The manufacturer says that they have 100 different keys/kits. So, if you buy this particular brand of rekey kit you have a 1 in 100 chance of having the key to someone else's door. From the outside of the lock, there's no way to tell that the kit was used to repin it. While 100 different combinations isn't a huge variety, I think it's enough to not be worried that a bad guy has a key to your lock. Realistically, if someone wants to break in to your house, they'll find a way...
What if I want the lock to fit into a different key (not included by the kit)? Do I *HAVE* to set the pins in the correct order for any key? (obviously not, right) For rekeying a different key, do I just have to reorder the pins over and over until it fits nice and flat on the top of the lock? Will I have to shorten the pins if they don't fit? Does this kit have all the necessary pin sizes for rekeying a different key (not included by the kit)?
Each type of lock has a different type of keyway which fits a specific blank so if you do it have a SC1 lock this won't fit. Also, their keypins are specific heights, Kwikset is different from schlage, etc. So, you would want to get a set specific to your lock
I have a different Schlage kit that doesn’t come with a key. It comes with a set of pins that are unlabeled. The pins are numbered 0 through 9 but not color coded. Included was a pin gauge that allows you to determine the PIN number. If you look at an original key that came with a lock, it has the sequence of PIN numbers engraved on the key or they might show on the original box. Each number designates the pin needed for that key code with the first number being the pin closest to the large end of the key. As you mentioned, you can just use trial and error to find the correct pin 0 through 9. So regardless what kind of Schlage key kit you have, you should be able to match any Schlage key. My warning is to be careful using the plug follower because if the top pins come out it hard to get them back in place.
That was really so simplified tutorial. I thought it would be hard and complicated, now I think I could do it with 4 sets of keyed knobs and 4 sets of deadbolt locks. 🥵🤞🤞 Don't you have a tutorial for keyed door knobs with a Rekeying kit?
If you go from 6 to 5 pin without removing the #6 pin thingy wouldn’t that bind up when finished and you test it? I’m not a locksmith but does the follow tube thingy used to keep the spring and driver from launching out?
My problem is I have a couple of new Segal deadbolt double cylinder locks and I can't figure out which repinning kit to buy, what Ive seen are "repin locks with Schlage or Kwikset keyways" or "KW1 keyway" or "SC1/SC4 keyways" and I'm finding any cross-reference to Segal. I have the correct Segal blanks, so I don't need a precut key to be included in a kit, my only concern is the pins are the right diameter and length etc, any idea what kit I need?
I don't know much about that brand but have you tried to see if one of the common links fits into the keyway? If it fits you can just use the keypins from that type of lock because you are rekeying anyway
Kwikset keypins are different lengths than schlage for example and would not work with the standard key cutting measurements so you would want to use pins for the lock brand you are using
Great video-- BUT, you didn't explain that from going from 6pin to 5pin that the spring/top pin on cylinder 6 needs to be removed BEFORE reassembly, otherwise the top pin will spring down and jam the lock.
It really depends on the brand you have. Some you just remove the peice in on the back and the lock comes out and some others you have to push down on the top of the Bible and the springs will retract a little bit then it will pop out. Is it a Schlage brand lock?

So far this seems difficult.
Any questions?
This kit is useless because it does not give you the number sizes so you can’t use this to match a different key. You have to use the key provided and all these kits have the same exact instructions and make you home easy to break into.
A great drinking game...watch this and drink every time he say that the pins are easily lost
Thanks for sharing
You can gets pins from www.clksupplies.com
If you only need enough pins for 1 lock and are from the US I could send you a few pins if you covered shipping.
Had to stop watching after the 4th warning about dropping and losing the pins
Just don't drop the pins it isn't worth it, lol
I really appreciate the video but I have to say...you talk WAY TOO MUCH. There are key things that need to be said and shown, but the sheer amount of filler made me skip forward so many times I've skipped one crucial piece of information, which resulted in me spilling the springs and having to refill the lock. This video could have been under 5 minutes without any loss of usefulness.
thank you for your feedback
