    Marcus is a great teacher. I love how he separated his hands, playing one hand in his knee and the other on the drums. Very helpful to see exactly what was happening. Thanks, guys!

      BRO YOU ARE AMAZING RIGHT ON POINT BECAUSE ALTHOUGH DENNIS HAS SPEED PARTICULARLY MORE IN THEE HANDS I WOULD NOT CONSIDER HIS FEET EQUAL AS WELL ESPECIALLY WHEN COMPARING IT TO DRUMMERS LIKE GEORGE KOLLIAS DEREK RODDY EUGENE RYABEHENKO AND VIGIL DONATI

      On the West Side story fill, I like to (at the slow pace you began with) interject an open hi-hat on the first 1, a snare on 3, and a ride bell on the "and" after every other four. I realize it's a little Steve Smith-y (Journey), but I think it sounds good. Thanks for introducing me to these fills. I'm a young drummer who isn't familiar with a lot of material, but these are all very fun. You'd just have to cut some tom notes.

    • @wanderingsoul4104
      @wanderingsoul4104 8 лет назад +9

      Another cool thing about the West Side fill at that pace is that you can make sort of a half-time shuffle out of it by playing open handed 8th notes on the hi-hat, replacing a tom note on four with a snare, add 2 ride bell notes on the first and + the first 1 count. It's supremely tricky, but you'll have yourself a pretty cool back beat for.... well, pretty much any genre you want. You'd just have to cut some tom notes. Anyway, I just wanted to add my two cents.

    • @cleansocks75

      It's called overplaying you guys. You wouldn't fills this fast in 99% of musical situations. It would just sound out of place, overbearing, and horrible. And most importantly, it would piss off the rest of your band mates.

    I wasn't fired, because I was in junior high school, but I was reprimanded a little for how I drummed to "Pomp And Circumstance" for our graduation. Mr. Bezner instructed all students to march into the auditorium with their "right foot landing in sync with the bass drum." So for the first ten measures or so, I played "boom...BAP...boom...BAP"...you know, like that. Then I thought I'd add "shee-ik-BAP, ba-boom-boom-BAP-boom, shee-ik-BAP, ba-boom-boom-BAP-boom"...the part to "Walk This Way." "Yeah, let's see their right foot land in sync with THIS!" I mused while playing it. Mr. Bezner turned around and tried o give me the dirtiest of looks, but I could tell he wanted to laugh. So, I still humored him and reverted to Boom...BAP...Boom...BAP...

      Kellen Mills, it's a common modern music industry myth, that "less is ALWAYS more", especially from the drum throne, thanks mainly to the fact that you don't actually have to have a background, in music education, to be in a band, and prevalent rock drummers, such as Ringo Starr, and Phil Rudd.

      GroboClone that is also a valid point. although, one might argue that genre has a lot to do with what a drummer's role in a song is. for most pop songs, there's really no reason why you need to play a fill like this, unless there's time for you to solo, or you're the next Dave Grohl. for big band, and improvisational music, big fills like these can indeed show off a drummer's skill AND serve the song.

    • @180drums
      @180drums  8 лет назад +15

      Great question Kellen. Gave Lee and GroboClone a good opportunity to share great perspectives!

    omg, those are great...Buddy & Dennis...Buddy Rich is just the alpha & omega of drumming...if you ever get bored with your drums, you aren't trying hard enough....I wasn't familiar with Marcus, he makes quite an impression.

    This man is so freaking enlightening. I couldn't understand why the hell you wouldn't play those licks untill he used the "dunk-off" metaphor and I finally understood!! I can't wait too watch this man more. I love learning most things on my own (started playing guitar at 12 never took lessons I'm 24 now) but man when a phenomenal teacher comes along I turn into a sponge. I'm literally going too binge watch this guy today.

    6.49 one of my drum teachers had me playing this as a starting point for independence in my left hand. Great fills. I played in punk bands where you can use these sort of fills very effectively but did get thrown out of club bands early on for being far too familiar with the Bonham triplet but at that time I had a lot of fills but very little control over fit. That was something which came later, in fact after watching an interview with Cozy Powell and he said sometimes drummers have to remember less is more and that was like profound wisdom at the time.

    I think the toms would sound much better if you can deaden that snare rattle.

    • @180drums

    • @easybakedkike8030
      @easybakedkike8030 8 лет назад +2

      DAKOTA13ize No, it is pretty much a term for all instruments. I play the trumpet in my jazz band and my section including the bass, drums, saxophones, and trombones use the term lick.
