I always thought she played a beautiful mom. I loved the time Ma and Pa were in bed together, eating popcorn and laughing! I just loved the show, and Ma was so real in it. Very good work, Karen! ❤️
Wow this saddens me because “Ma” was such an important character that not just anyone can play. She’s absolutely phenomenal and contributes to what little House series stands for, she was a huge part of its success! Truly sad that she was treated that way, especially by “Pa”
Karen's Ma was absolutely radiant, even when she wasn't speaking. In many scenes with Michael Landon, she outshone him as the steady center, by just being there. I have to wonder if Michael was aware of that, on some level. I'm glad she's become open about it. So many of us were curious about her absence from fan events, etc. Now we know why.
The more I hear about the behind the scenes stuff of Little House the more convinced I become that Charles Ingalls would NEVER put up with the stuff Michael Landon pulled and got away with. 😑 He would have clocked him in the jaw and said “You get your act together or you’re not welcome in this town.”
Michael Landon had A LOT of skeletons in his closet and was in many ways VERY VERY different from his character. He was brilliant but like us all flawed. It was also a time when women were NOT VALUED in all industries and societies to the degree they should've been!...😢😡
@@caelachyt ...Karen's grievance with Michael Landon is legitimate, and she has every right to express her views on the matter --- which she has done, in my view, with a remarkable lack of bitterness. Also, Landon's death did not impose a permanent gag order on the subject, even if he can't "defend" himself. That's not how real life works.
still beautiful - always dreamed to have a wife just like Caroline in my life - I ended up blessed that way. Thank you Karen for bringing so much sweetness to such a wonderful character in a great show. You are still so beautiful ☺
Loved her character in the show and I knew about Landon's extreme pride issue and always drinking on shows and in movies but I would NEVER have guessed that she was over indulging in alcohol. I just feel bad for her for having been trapped in that situation and as for her drinking, we are all human and have our weaknesses and she overcame it! She was perfect for the part and she still seems so cool and kind after all these years. She even looks and acts much younger than her age. Hats off to Karen...we still love you!
Little House would not be little house without Karen as Ma, Mike as Pa, Melissa 1 as Mary, Melissa 2 as Laura and Allison as Nellie. The beautiful thing about this show that stands out from all the rest, is that EACH of the actors/actresses brought those characters to life and embraced them..They made each one believable. Can you imagine anyone else as Ma? I can't.
I hope that Karen is reading these comments so that she can see just how much she meant to us as girls and still as adults navigating the misogyny and chauvinism that is so prevalent in our lives. We love you, Karen, and your role as Ma will stay with us forever.

@@gigilamoore2656 he threw the whole Edwards family under the bus in LHOTP just because of a fall out he had with French. Then a few seasons later he tried to bring them back after his attempts to mend fences. IMHO that was when the show started its downward slope. I think he had difficulty making good relationships with his family and teammates because of his rough childhood. Not saying people don't have a free will but environment does play a role.
@Lukas Miller,Victor French obviously mended his relationship with Michael Landon because they both starred together in “Highway to Heaven” after little house was over. French also credited Michael Landon for saving him from a life of playing bad guys and killers and gave him roles where he could really shine and show of his abilities. He was a great actor, both in comedic and serious roles. He had nothing but kind things to say about Micheal Landon at the end. Like I said. Michael Landon was a human being. He had his flaws just as she did and we all do. You can’t ignore the great work he did while he was here though,or forget all the kind things people said about him.

It’s funny I used to notice a bit of melancholy and sadness with her in some episodes. Now I know why. It never affected her acting though, she was always realistic in her portrayal.

My children are grown now, but all my life, I wanted to be Ma. She was the perfect mother. Karen pulled off Ma with such excellence that to this day, she's still my ideal image of a mother, to me, this is what makes an actor/actress fabulous, when they create a character so believable is hard to separate them from the character.
I really enjoyed the show when I was younger, as an adult, I realized just how "Jesus-ee" and "Bible-ee" the show was which was a hugh turn off. Not a surprise given that Landon and Victor French also did Highway to Heaven, where Landon played an angel.
@Sean given the time period, I think it was pretty normal. But to me, that's part of what I liked. It was a show with decent morals and ethics. I like Brady bunch for that reason too. Wholesome I guess it's the word.

My guess is that Michael didn't want to give Karen her well-deserved raise bec that would acknowledge that she was a significant factor in the success of the show. I tend to think he wanted to be seen as the "reason" for the success of the show rather than acknowledging that Karen had majorly contributed to its success.

This issue is so true of men in general at that time, maybe still. Michael thought HE was the glue that held the show together, but it was YOU! His character wouldn’t have been what he was without you. So true in most marriages! You’re the best!
Karen Grassie definitely should have be nominated for an Emma. Her sweet personality blended so beautifully with Michael Landon and her character as the mother was very much needed in the story of the family. She was one of the reasons for the huge success of that show. She deserved to be recognized for her contribution to the success of Little House on the Prairie. I loved that show and I tried to use her character as a model for motherhood.
Everybody wanted a Ma just like her. A family like the Ingalls. Wanted to be part of it. I know I did. I grew up watching the show, over and over. I got so much out of it, and my character was influenced by it so much. I am so grateful.
The Actress that played Mrs. Olsen, I forgot her name. But anyway when Michael Landon was gonna do The movie. Little House The Last Farewell. She would not do the movie . Because she couldn't stand Michael Landon. She said he did not pay her fairly and treated people awful. They released the article that she was in India. And that was why she didn't appear in the movie. But she said she was right here in America but refused to have anything to do with Michael Landon again.

Watching this interview actually brought tear to my eyes, you/LH meant so much to me a the time my family going through a terriable crisis with my eldest brother, who was 18 at the time and watching LH somehow comforted me and made me forget for a little while my situation at the time. Boy was I jealous of Ma being married to ML. He was one gorgeous man!! Still my all-time favorite actor of all time and one of my favorite episodes is when you have flash back on how you met Charles as little kids. At the end of that episode your hair was down and it looked so beautiful and Charles said "You sure look pretty with your hair down like that, I like it" something like that.
One of my favorite lines from the show was a beautiful compliment from Charles to Caroline. She was worried that she was being prideful because she spent some money on material to make herself a new dress. He said "Caroline, why do you think the good Lord went to all that trouble making you so pretty if he didn't want you to have a new blue dress?" That's from season 1, episode 3 called "Country Girls." Of course, she ended up making dresses for the girls out of the material because that's the kind of mother she was.❤❤
i am very proud of her that she could tell what was happening behind the rideaux and what a professionnal to make these smiles and kiss him and hug him when she was actually mad at him .
I am on my second complete season of little house. I fall asleep every night watching it. Sometime I change to the waltons but don't watch the whole series because I need little house. I had no idea of your troubles. So sorry. You have helped me to be the mom I never had. Thank you so much

She was my favorite character! I tried modeling after her, as a mom. I had a phenomenally loving mom, but she was taken too early. Most of my memories are of her being ill, so Ma showed me so much! Grace, patience, forgiveness, etc… so many attributes, and I’m thankful she held on! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Had meant something? Are you kidding me? I cant believe this. Its tragic. How could she not have known her importance in our lives? I couldnt get enough if her andhow she handled every problem that came her way...
I love her like a family member. She is so warm, kind and sincere. I still cannot quite fathom that she struggled with drugs and alcohol but am listening to her latest audio book, looking forward to learning more about her.
I was so happy about the pilot of this show. Then began the regurgitated Bonanza scripts and it became unwatchable for me because I loved Laura Ingalls Wilders books so much. Karen did a good job playing Ma, though.
I'm 66 and still have a strong love for LHOTP. Karen and Melissa are the true heroes of this show. Michael Landon was extremely talented and loved by many, but if you watch the shows he wrote, he writes Charles as a saint who knows everything and takes care of everyone. Yes, he was one of the producers and this show was his baby, but he obviously used his power to cheat on his wife when he wanted to, while portraying himself as a faithful husband. Behind the scenes, he was perpetuating a misogynistic culture that wasn't being called out during that era. He was flawed like anyone. Thanks to Karen for bravely speaking up. We can still love the show knowing the truth. She will always be the ultimate 'ma' role model in my book. Also tremendous gratitude to the writer Laura Ingalls Wilder who shared her amazing story.
I can understand both her and his (possible) point of view. Her wanting him to support the raise may have put him in an awkward position. Who knows what his position or standing was with higher ups? Was he really in charge of the actors’ pay? If not, maybe she should’ve not involved him it and maybe just told him (as a comrade) she was gonna ask them (executive producers? or whomever…) Then maybe Michael could’ve just stayed more neutral. I doubt it was simple greed or selfishness on Michael’s part, which is often alluded to. Regardless, it was a difficult situation. Maybe the higher ups should just be proactive in compensating employees properly in the first place so they don’t have to ask for a raise?!
Karen should have gotten a raise just for being so exquisitely beautiful in the most natural way a woman can be beautiful. She was such a vital part of the show…a great actress who made it look so effortless. I can’t imagine what Michael was thinking. And Karen…you’re STILL beautiful!!!
Thank you for posting this interview. I didn't know Karen Grassle experienced Hardship on that show. Her protrayal as 'ma' is iconic. its sad to know that Michael was greedy and didn't want to Pay her fairly and that she felt trapped and professionally abused by Michael. I read a tell-all book that Michael's step daughter wrote about him. She talks about the positive sides but is also brutally honest about his bad side too. and so to now learn that he was greedy and disrespected Karen its sad to know. but i'm glad that Karen understands that the great work she did on that show made a difference in peoples lives and that she made a positive contribution to society with it.

Karen you were probably not recognized enough monetarily, but you earned the hearts of millions of people in the world. We love you Ma!
Just hearing Ma’s voice again is comforting
I always thought she played a beautiful mom. I loved the time Ma and Pa were in bed together, eating popcorn and laughing! I just loved the show, and Ma was so real in it. Very good work, Karen! ❤️
@@jacquelinel1618 So true!!
The greatest television mom of all time. I just love her.
Wow this saddens me because “Ma” was such an important character that not just anyone can play. She’s absolutely phenomenal and contributes to what little House series stands for, she was a huge part of its success! Truly sad that she was treated that way, especially by “Pa”
Ms. Grassle, you did a great job portraying, ‘Caroline Ingalls” or ‘Ma’. No one could ever portray her as well as you did. Thank you.
Well said!
You're absolutely right. 💯
I think the same!
Michael Landon had A LOT of skeletons in his closet and was in many ways VERY VERY different from his character. He was brilliant but like us all flawed. It was also a time when women were NOT VALUED in all industries and societies to the degree they should've been!...😢😡
Here here!
Yeah Melissa gilbert was talking bad about him too. Heard a lot if stuff where he was an alcoholic. Dam!! Little Joe
Karen seems candid and forthright, yet lacking an air of bitterness over her problems with the show. She wears her balance and modesty well.
Great assessment, she is wonderful.
I don’t blame her.
She seems quite bitter, or she wouldn't be trashing someone who isn't here to defend himself.
@@caelachyt Where did she trash him? Sounds like you're penalizing her for advocating for herself as a woman in entertainment.

The LHOP TV show wouldn’t be what is was without Karen. She carried it as much as anyone else.

The beautiful thing about this show that stands out from all the rest, is that EACH of the actors/actresses brought those characters to life and embraced them..They made each one believable. Can you imagine anyone else as Ma? I can't.

Grassle, not Grassley. Not "Mrs," that was her name at birth.
@Historian212 good for you.
According to at least a couple sites, it is pronounced (/ɡræsliː/ GRASS-LEE). Perhaps that is where they are getting the spelling of Grassley from even if it is spelled Grassle?
Karen is still a beautiful woman. I loved her as Ma as I watched as a child because I could tell she was a caring mother. Kudos to her for giving us great memories.
I lost respect for Michael Landon a long time ago when I heard an interview Michael Jr did...the affairs and new family and rejection..I am sorry you went through all of this Karen. I love you in that role and your show was so much a part of our week. You did well helping teach us morals I think. You touched our hearts, so did Michael. But I did lose respect for him

@@lukasmiller486 Most of it is genetic, heredity.
Oh boo hoo! What these actors don't seem to get is that most of us in the real world have real jobs where things are far from perfect. We often have difficult bosses, coworkers that try to upstage us and dont even get me started on being paid for what I believe my work is worth. Why should it be different for actors? Get over it..

I loved Ma… she was such a great character and I loved watching her on Little House. Karen Grassle is the best, I always liked her acting on that show.😊
I can't imagine what she was going through during the time they were filming the show, but for what it's worth, I'm thankful she stayed on since she brought me a lot of joy as I watched her, and I've always looked up to her as the Mom.
My favorite episodes were the first 3 seasons they were on. XO
It’s funny I used to notice a bit of melancholy and sadness with her in some episodes. Now I know why. It never affected her acting though, she was always realistic in her portrayal.
As for me she is one of the best actresses I know in a specific role.
I thought she was great too. She always reminded me slightly of Doris Day.
She was VERY lucky to have found herself in the series. Her awkwardness and lack of talent actually worked,... only because of the period setting.
@@Suddenlyits1960I can see that! Doris was a sweet and beautiful lady too.❤❤

I was a child watching Little House I loved her and thought she was a beautiful mother and still is a beautiful soul!
I have always loved watching LHOTP.
Karens portrayl of Ma was exceptional, gracious, passionate and believable.

My guess is that Michael didn't want to give Karen her well-deserved raise bec that would acknowledge that she was a significant factor in the success of the show. I tend to think he wanted to be seen as the "reason" for the success of the show rather than acknowledging that Karen had majorly contributed to its success.
Interesting that this is being said when he's been dead so long and can't give his side of this.

This issue is so true of men in general at that time, maybe still. Michael thought HE was the glue that held the show together, but it was YOU! His character wouldn’t have been what he was without you. So true in most marriages! You’re the best!
Michael Landon may have been jealous of Karen grassle's popularity with the fans.
Karen Grassie definitely should have be nominated for an Emma. The Actress that played Mrs. Olsen, I forgot her name. But anyway when Michael Landon was gonna do The movie. Little House The Last Farewell. She would not do the movie .

Loved Ma...watching Little House right now...my favorite show of all time..❤
I was so happy about the pilot of this show. Then began the regurgitated Bonanza scripts and it became unwatchable for me because I loved Laura Ingalls Wilders books so much. Karen did a good job playing Ma, though.
Yes, Michael Landon recycled a lot of episodes from Bonanza. I thought that I was the only one that noticed it.
We only have her version here, he has no chance to defend himself.
Large ensemble, expensive sets, paying for the book rights.
I do know that when Adam (Pernell)left Bonanza, the 3 of them divided up his salary equally and it was Michael's idea.
What a cheapskate Landon was. I loved Karen in her role. She was absolutely perfect.
Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura ingalls said she also had to fight to get a small pay increase.
I always wanted to be a mother like Ma. She was warm and loving.
I loved Ma growing up and I wished she was my ma. Hearing all the trouble she had while on the show makes me more impressed with her and her performances through such pain and anguish. How das that Michael Landon had such a problem with her being paid more for her awesome performances on the series
