- This is a classic Toto tune that Jeff Porcaro made his own through his signature single handed 16th note groove. It has really taken me some time to develop not just the speed in order to play the groove at this tempo, but then the ability to make it feel so relaxed and comfortable as it is very easy to let the right hand tense up on the hi hat. Todd Sucherman describes it as the shank tip, where the right hand "shanks" in on the beats and upbeats and then just "tips" the top of the cymbal on the e's and uh's. Other than the groove itself, the rest of the song is rather simple with some nice fills, and a bass drum pattern that alters to compliment the bass part sometimes. It's definitely a song to work on for those trying to achieve a nice consistent hi hat sound no matter how fast or slow a song might be!

I keep coming back to this. By far the best drum cover of this song and it's not even close. I'm 63 and I am thinking of getting a nice starter set to learn this song. Jeff Pecaro was crazy ass good. His replacement Simon Phillips was superb as well. Any recommendation on a starter drum set? Does one need to read music? TIA.
Tony! Thanks for watching. As far as starter kits go, I'd recommend a Ludwig Accent or a Yamaha Stage Custom. All your main drum companies make a decent starter kit, but in my opinion Ludwig and Yamaha sets aren't as poorly made as some of the other companies lower line kits. No need to learn how to read music (although its heavily encouraged) as a lot of learning comes from listening and watching!

Jeff Porcaro often put a lot into those riffs. Wears you out just doing that and you're happy he didn't go crazy on the fills.
Saw Toto recently with Journey here in San Diego. The drummer was from Justin Bieber's band and he was great. Nice job here.

Tate are you using push pull technique on your right hand? Moeller or combo of both...thats a very difficult groove at that speed and you play it perfect.
Matt, the motion I'm using to achieve this groove on the hi hat is coming from my wrist and forearm. Sort of a push pull with the arm, but my wrist is dipping to create an angle between the stick and the cymbal. If you search up "Todd Sucherman Shank Tip", there are some great videos of him explaining this technique and showing it better than I can!

Thanks for the kind words and question! First off, don't over compensate and grip the stick to hard if you are starting to loose it! Make sure that your thumb is completely on the stick, and that your fingers are all making contact, but not squeezing the stick. This motion mostly comes from the wrist for me, with a little forearm to add power. My fingers are there to keep to stick in the right spot and guide, while my wrist moves back and forth. Check out some videos of Todd Sucherman explaining this technique, as he does a great job at showing it and executing it!

Using the Vic Firth David Garibali sticks here I believe. They're around the size of a 5A, but a little longer.
