In this interview, George Inlow describes his experiences in the United States Navy during Vietnam. He tells of his father’s involvement in World War II as a paratrooper in Europe who was slated to jump as part of the invasion of Okinawa when the atomic bomb was dropped. His father remained in the Army, so as a child, Mr. Inlow travelled extensively, going to school in France, Fort Bragg, Taiwan and Fort Stewart. He remembers seeing extensive damage around Europe from World War II and making friends with a French boy. At Fort Campbell he watched his father practice with other paratroopers. He enlisted in the Navy shortly before the draft lottery began. He was offered SEAL training but turned it down and trained in radar. He relates experiences during his deployments and tells of his philosophy of war. He describes winter aboard ship off the coast of Korea during the USS Pueblo incident. He describes his ship’s part in assisting the USS Enterprise after an explosion and fire. He tells of his ship chasing a Russian Echo-class submarine. He relates visiting Nagasaki and tells of the emotions he experienced there. He details the decommissioning of his ship and leaving the Navy as well as his subsequent education and employment. He describes learning not to tell people he had been to Vietnam and comments on the healing process. He relates his family’s military history, including his four uncles in the Navy and Army Air Corps.
