In this interview Percy Eugene Green describes his experiences in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He tells of his childhood in Miami and Sanford, Florida, and his early education. He relates that President John F. Kennedy’s quote, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” inspired him to enlist. He tells how he wanted to avoid gang activity in Liberty City and Opa Locka, Florida. He describes conditions in Vietnam and the emotions he felt while later visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He relates being wounded and details the treatment he received back in the United States. He recalls how black personnel were not being promoted and remembers a lieutenant who volunteered for everything. He describes having some R&R (rest and relaxation) and how prayer helped get him through.

I used to work around a lot of Black Vets and they used to do alot of grousing about the Army. Then one day one of them said if they hadn't been drafted they would probably be in prison or dead and all the others were quick to agree.Mr. Green seems to express that too.
