It doesn't matter if you're a country music fan or not, this is one of the greatest biopics ever done. It's powered by one of the truly great acting performances in American cinematic history.
@@fabianferrada2501 That's your opinion, and you're certainly entitled to it, however, in my opinion Bohemian Rhapsody is up there with the likes of this film.
Growing up dirt poor, I mean real dirt poor in East Texas. We, my family caught this movie outside a drive in. My Daddy some how with a radio antenna caught reception, we allsat down to watch a classic. I was just 8, with broken shoes, and thought to myself, wow poor people can survive and make it.
Amen Julio Pecina. I watched this Movie in my Twenties. I think it's one of the Best Biopics in Movie History. Sissy Spacek deserved The Oscar that Night. When she was Decorated by The President, it was so cool because she was Inducted the Same Night as James Brown who also grew up poor but climbed himself out of it as did Carol Burnett.
You are so right. In the movie Loretta's family looked like they were doing just fine, also in real life too. They seemed to be quite happy and always had a good old time. They all knew how to be resourceful and never let anything go to waste. If you loved the movie, you'll love the book. I highly recommend it to anyone who's a Loretta fan. It is excellent reading. :)
Perhaps the Greatest Movie Biopic of all time. Perfect casting, perfect music, everything is just perfection!! None of the other nominees stood a chance that year for the Academy Award against Sissy. She won every award prior to the Oscar and it was well deserved. I saw the movie in the theaters at least 13 times when it was released. The movie should have won the Oscar for Best Picture that year as well!
Mama and Daddy took us kids to see that movie when it was new. Fond memories of my childhood. I surely miss Mama and Daddy. Both have gone home to be with The Lord now.
I remember as a kid my Mother dragged me to so this. She was a big Loretta Lynn fan. I was so angry because Dad and my brother were going to see something I wanted to see. Mom held my hand, we ate popcorn. I felt good sitting with Mom. I can’t even remember what movie I didn’t get to see with Dad and my brother. But I remember this movie. It’s tied to a great memory of my Mother. She’s older now. Has dementia. But she’ll talk about Loretta Lynn and that movie. She retired from the government as a supervisor of Coal Miners Compensation and black lung sickness. I wonder if Loretta Lynn motivated Mom into that occupation.
@@j.b.9260 no I got to see that. It was so long ago I can’t remember. I just know my Dad said he wanted to see something cool and not Coal Miners Daughter. He wasn’t a country music fan like Mom was. So when I say Dad and my brother went to see something I wanted to see, I meant as in I knew it was something I did. I can’t for the life of me recall what they saw. I am 50 so I was a young kid at the time. The experience with my Mother shadowed whatever Dad and my brother saw. All the Star Wars movies we saw as a family, that I will never forget.
The reason this movie is better than other biopics is because it's told in chronological order. Unlike RAY and others where they skip around and use flashbacks they tend to lose the feel of how it came about.
RIP Miss Lynn. You are reunited with "Doolittle," and your Mommy and Daddy again. This film is over 40 years, but it has held up very well. IMHO, it is one the very finest treatments of 20th century American life and popular culture ever made.
Exactly this was/is a wonderful and powerful movie.i must admit it brought sweet sad tears to my eyes.Im a African American woman and I enjoyed this movie to the fullest. My mother was/Is A true Country fan!my siblings and I grew up on Country and definitely GOSPEL!😊👍💛💚💟
You're in great company. Can't believe this movie is 40 years old...and was released in theaters March 1980. I remember getting tid bits of each day once the film was in production. They film started filming even before they hired the actor, Levon Helms, to play Ted Webb...Loretta's dad.
Although this movie was released over forty years ago, it still remains the most successful movie about a person who is still living...and for sure the greatest story about a country music artist. Loretta Lynn still is in a lane by herself...with no competition.
I saw Coal Miner’s Daughter in a second run theater on a double bill with Melvin and Howard. This was one of the best afternoons of my life. Two fantastic films together on one movie screen.
Discovered this after watching Tender Mercies for the first time last week. This looks brilliant. Sissy Spacek is such a talent, and you can tell from the trailer alone.
I love this movie so much! The acting is absolutely superb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never gets old and always is better and better everytime I watch it! I also love that Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo did their own singing. I know that there are others who did their own singing in other movies and such. But the talent that Sissy and Beverly had in this movie really made it authentic. Tommy Lee Jones and Levon Helm pulled off the role of Mooney and Ted Webb quite sufficiently. One of my absolute favorites and a REAL treat to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was born a coal miners daughter the year of 1976 in Kentucky. My mom had shirts made for my sister & I that said “ Coal miners daughter” this movie touched alot of people’s hearts. Now that my daddy has passed, at the age of 71. It’s hard for me to listen to the song. He worked 42 years breathing in that dust. Rip daddy, thank you for giving me a good life ❤️
The movie turns 40 today! Sissy Spacek has a great singing voice playing Loretta Lynn and Tommy Lee Jones does fantastic as the husband. This is one of Michael Apted's better films. Pacing is brisk and I like a lot of the songs. Fame and success happening so fast can be overwhelming too
..I saw this movie with both my parents when it came out.. I'm pretty sure it's the only movie I ever saw with both of them at the same time at the theater.. even though they were married over 40 years
I never was a big country music fan growing up although many of my family and friends were. However, I loved this movie! I mean I loved it so much my wife will say "oh no you watching that again!? It's a classic!!!

I just love this movie so much. I love Loretta so much. And I love Country so much. Loretta Lynn is a good prime example of so much good. Her love and long marriage to Dooley. The love care of her children her folks and her whole family was always so sound. Once upon a time women took their marriage vows seriously and the mportance of family and friends as well - especially in the Southern and Midwestern states where Christianity beliefs still rule and I don't mean bible thumping rule but the bible is never far off, ya know? To have kept it together like Loretta has under the constant glaring spotlight and fast lane of fame is doubly hard and to be admired. And she's also a good example how the the stringent wait til 18 to wed laws need to be considered more situation by situation oriented left up to a family decision.
I love this movie Sissy was a perfect actress. Tommy Lee Jones was funny 🤣 esp when Lorretta decided to wear lipstick and she whacked Tommy with her handbag 🤣😂😆. He looked so funny
That why I sing and play today after seeing her life story,40 yrs ago I would give my right arm to meet.her and sing the song I wrote about her thanking her for inspiring me to sing rccowboy muscian 40 yrs
Directed by absolute legend - Michael Apted - he of 'seven up' documentaries fame. Saw it at 19 - absolutely blew me away. Think now I'm going to have to go see it somewhere on the big screen again.
The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards...and the title song should have been included. I'm still mad at that forty years later. But Sissy Spacek did win for Best Actress beating out many grade a actresses.
Absolutely great film... And Tommy Lee Jones is just as good as Sissy. He is perfection as Doo. The film belongs to both of them. it's the chemistry that makes the film.
Did you know that it was Lorraine Roberson, the hair stylist in Coal Miner's Daughter, was the lady who took a snip of Loretta's hair, played by Sissy Spacek, in the scene when she's leaving the stadium heading to her bus?
I had not seen CMD for many years, but rewatched in on television the other night. Sissy, Tommy Lee, and Beverly all gave Oscar-worthy performances. However, the film was made while Dolittle was still alive, and I do not believe it is a truthful characterization of the real person. In LL's sequel memoir, "Still Woman Enough," which was written after Do's death, she comes clean about Dolittle Lynn. He was a violent and abusive drunk who also squandered a lot of her money on bad investments. CMD played up the "love story," but where there is abuse, there is no love.
It's one of the best biopics about a musician I've ever seen and I'm appalled that Tommy Lee Jones didn't get a nomination or win for this. Sissy Spacek fully deserved hers no question but he got robbed in my opinion
Tommy Lee Jones should have been recognised more for his work in this picture. He did an excellent job. As for Sissy Spacek, she is blessed with more talent than most of her contemporaries.
It doesn't matter if you're a country music fan or not, this is one of the greatest biopics ever done. It's powered by one of the truly great acting performances in American cinematic history.
Have to agree with this. I'm a rock and metal fan, but this is one of the greatest biopics ever (at least until Bohemian Rhapsody is released)
@@animal61066 Bohemian Rapsody is a very mediocre biopic, the lead actor sucks.
@@fabianferrada2501 That's your opinion, and you're certainly entitled to it, however, in my opinion Bohemian Rhapsody is up there with the likes of this film.

laminage It's awesome she won, she earned it. Sometimes its confusing to set them apart. Sissy Spacek, became Loretta Lynn, in that role.

Great movie, and one of the MOST deserving Oscar wins of ALL time (for Sissy Spacek as Loretta). Wonderful!
👍
Didn't grow up on her music but this movie introduced me to her. So glad 😊 Rest peacefully 😇

It’s a great film but there were more deserving films for best picture like Empire Strikes Back, Elephant Man, Raging Bull and The Shining.
So which one won best picture?

Hands down, my favorite performance by any actor/actress is Sissy Spacek in this. Unreal how good she is.
What amazed me most about spacek's acting is that she can play a 14yo girl so well around the age of 30 and doesn't make anyone feel odd at all
I heard that she had to lose a bunch of weight to play the young Loretta.
