- Oh dear: It's time to talk about Naughty Dog again. But fear not! We're not haters. Rather, today's episode of + is a two-hour ride through The Last of Us: Part I -- recently released on PlayStation 5 and coming soon to PC -- featuring me (Colin) and Last Stand's Coordinator and Shopkeep (and my fiancé), Micah. We get deep into the story, the characters, the gameplay, the differences between the PS3, PS4, and PS5 versions, and even discuss Naughty Dog's current reputation, and why it's so darn popular to hate on one of gaming's greatest studios ever, and what undoubtedly remains, even nine years later, one of the very best games of all-time. Indeed, maybe the best way to get people to stop talking about Naughty Dog is to actually release something convincingly better than what they make, and well, we're largely still waiting. A warning: We spoil the game utterly and completely, as well as Left Behind. We don't spoil Part II whatsoever, as Micah's never even played it. Enjoy.

Actually Joel’s watch did break in the intro, that’s something that they changed in the remake.
The conversation about David felt very strange to me. Maybe my understanding of this story isn't as universal as I'd assumed?
David kept Ellie alive because he was sexually attracted to her. There's indications beforehand but it's made clear when he has her in the prison cell and says "you can come around, you're loyal.... and you're special." and then he puts his hand on hers. She takes advantage of this moment to injure him and try to grab his keys, but he's more hurt by her rejection of his advance.
In those final moments in the restaurant, right before Ellie grabs the knife, it seems that David is about to force himself upon her. This seems reinforced by his line, "You have no idea what I'm capable of." and then after she cries to Joel "He tried to..." but can't finish the sentence. This is also my understanding of why Ellie keeps zoning out when Joel is talking to her in the next season. She's still dealing with the trauma.
So unless I've wildly misinterpreted something, David was NOT a good dude at all.

Joel makes this choice not just to "save the girl this time", he does this because he can't live through the same amount of pain again. The first time was the single most traumatic event of his live, which made him never care for anyone as much for the next 20 years. He didn't want Ellie to become his daughter figure for this exact reason. It happened anyway. He can't lose a daughter twice, he wouldn't let it happen no matter what. Saving the world is not something he considered for more than a second.
This is why the intro part is so important in the overall story. The whole game is about the possibility of losing the closest person in your life more than once. At least, that's what I think the main idea was.
Thank you for your positivity about The Last of Us and Naughty Dog - it’s refreshing! You’re seemingly the only one talking about this game so that is very welcomed too. It’s popular to hate on this IP and the greatest video game studio right now and I can’t help but wonder if the “Sony tax” is going too far. The Last of Us was a masterpiece and still is to this day! Naughty Dog is the gold standard…still.

Joel used to be a Hunter who killed (and God knows what else) a lot of innocent people. He was so hardcore during those days that his own brother got sick of him and decided to leave his ass.

Was sad to hear Micah didn’t get to play pt 2. I recently restarted to do the grounded trophy and it’s a son of a bitch, but you really appreciate the design and quality of the experience.
Started replaying it myself and I am enjoying it way more now that there isn't the whole toxicity around it with the leaks and everything.
It's really fun gameplay wise.
Story is a bit of snoozefest imo, Abby is just not interesting or fun to watch or play in any way but oh well

Loved seeing you both talk about my favorite game of all time it was very cute and heart warming. The Last of Us is still to this day one of the greatest games of all time and it still holds up to this day.

My experience with the ending is very similar to Micah's. It really didn't sit right with me, but the next time I got around to playing the game again I had become a father. That meant that when it came to save Ellie it was obvious because as a parent and protector you will easily become the villain, the killer, the survivor, the immoral if it is toward the goal of saving your child. For Joel that is even heavier because he failed in saving his biological daughter all those years before. That's why he is a "monster" in TLOU. The monster keeps him alive and, by extension, pushes him to save Ellie even if from the higher viewpoint it's the wrong choice.
Looks like someone in the house, at least, knows how to finish their shelf
I have never watched a trailer as many times as the live stage gameplay at I believe e3. I probably saw it 30-40 times. I showed it to everyone to see what video games had become and it delivered in everyway.
This was excellent. Would love one of these on The Witcher 3 or RDR1&2.

I watched the new Hellraiser today and in the credits among the people who they extended a 'thank you' to was a Colin Moriarty.
You find a note from Ish in the town from after they escaped the sewer, so he survived the sewers, meaning none of the ones you fight in there are Ish. He could be one of the infected that comes after you after the sniper sequence though.
Days Gone had infected children "Newts"

Thanks for the content. I wanted to add to discussion around the symbolism of Joel's watch. The watch was broken in the same moment he lost Sarah and therefore time lost all meaning for him. Sorry, if you already knew this.
I love how I can watch this without playing it because I've already beaten the old version.
Not that I don't plan on getting it eventually but it's nice that I don't have to do homework.
I was disappointed there was no improvement to Ellie’s AI. She still walked right in front of enemies without them ever spotting her.

@@PaulieWalnuts13 it was, 9/10 times she moved when NPC approached, in my game anyway she might’ve been seen twice the entire game, in the 2013 release she was spotted countless times, also your NPC partners aren’t useless this time around, a perfect example is during certain segments bill would just sit back and wait for you to attack everything all by yourself & in the same segments in the remake bill would take it upon himself to back Joel up & kill infected along side of you, in my experience playing the original & then the remake back to back there was huge differences in the AI.

I bought the physical copy for 40 dollars and have no regrets playing it again, it really was a great update to the game. I played both part 1 & 2 during the last month and goddamn they are part of my top 10 games ever, both of them. So amazing. Part 2 is slightly better in my opinon, its bold and big and messy and i love that.

I feel like this discussion is mostly about TLOU itself, and the defense of the “remake” seems to be out of fear or something of talking bad about TLOU. I think it’s clear why people have an issue with this game. It’s just so indicative of where Sony is right now, and how they’re not really doing much of substance for PlayStation. In my opinion, this remake and the rumored other PS games in the works are useless. They have a console that is still hard to find, and are putting a laughably low effort into making it a console even worth getting. There’s virtually nothing noteworthy.

The Last of US Part 1 played it on the PS4 and will be playing it again on PC, this game really shows how human beings have to survive in a world where the government doesn't exist no more.
Looking forward to this convo. Probably going to play this version of TLOU later on after everyone else, usually happens with each one of the games when I finally play them.
I know witch titan fall trophy your talking about , it’s the one where you have to do the obstacle course in a certain time and that one was brutal. I tried for weeks hours at a time so finally I paid someone online to do it for me lol
Here’s the thing. Not many games can be considered timeless. The Last of Us, as it stands, remake or remaster, is timeless. You can release it 20 years from now and it will be great.
Same with things like The Godfather or What’s Going On (Marvin Gaye), Sistine Chapel for peats sake.

I think the game was great, the fact sony feel I should replay it two more times is bizarre to me. A well written story is memorable, I shouldnt replay it every generation. If you havnt played the game, ofc this would be amazing as a "must have" on your ps5.
Well you could make the same argument about films being remastered or upgraded to 4k. It’s what it’s worth to the individual. Plus you don’t have to buy it again if you don’t want to right? These things cost money to make. But it’s your choice if you want to spend your money again. Remakes, remasters or whatever. They exist as people are happy to buy them more than once. I love Blade Runner. I own it on VHS, dvd, Blu ray and 4K. But that’s my choice.
I've always thought things are worth what people are willing to pay. I wasn't willing to pay $70, and I got it for $50 2 months later. So the people for whom the game was worth $70 bought it early, and those to whom it wasn't waited a couple of months and bought it on sale.
I am not sure why you would waste so much time being so hung up on the fact that some people aren't willing to spend what you are willing to spend.
I'd also like to add, I played the game in late December, more than 3 months after release and there were still bugs in it that were widely known since the game launched, but as far as I can tell, they only patched the game once. So I don't think that Sony is exactly treating this like a $70 game. I played Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok the week those games came out and they were CONSTANTLY sending out patches. That's how you support a $70 game, not what they did with The Last of Us Part 1, where they shove it out the door and don't bother keeping up with patches.

The whole "this is what games can be?" thing is very demeaning to the medium ironically, I for one detest the notion that games focused on gameplay are lesser than games that simply mimic movies or television. Thats not a $10-20 difference that you are describing. The arguement is that the ps5 version isn't a 6x better experience. I can't believe Colin thinks Part 2 is a better game than Part 1. I've replayed Part 2 recently and the story is simply bad, and the pacing is god awful. Granted, the gameplay is better, but what I remembered most about Part 1 was the story and characters, not the gameplay.
Because it objectively is…you have to be missing something to think otherwise.
@@darkhpokinsngaming8889 Sure, something being good or bad is subjective. I once knew a guy that adored Superman 64, a game that's known simply for how bad it is, or bad to a majority of people. This being said, and acknowledging the concept of subjectivity, I feel confident in saying that a game like Half Life is a better game than Superman 64, and I could only hope that most people would agree. I did previously acknowledge that Part 2's combat loop is deeper and frankly, a lot more entertaining than the combat in Part 1, however, as a writer and animator with what I'd consider to be a basic degree of understanding of story, strong characters, conflict and pacing, it is my opinion (albeit subjective) that Part 1 is vastly superior to Part 2. Even with it's strong combat mechanics, Part 2's story didn't engage me enough to progress, so completing it (which I did) took a lot of effort. Even with it's acknowledged, worst combat, Part 1 had me gripped from beginning to end, and judging by the negative response Part 2 received upon its release, I wasn't alone. I'll give Part 2 one thing, the Ellie section of the game is decent, but it completely lost me after that.

@@burnout713 Couldn't disagree more. The story of Part 1 had me hooked and Part 2's story frankly bored me and I really didn't like any section with Abby as I didn't care for the character at all.
TLOU2 leaks were totally 100% correct. Joel golfed, tarns character, new butch female, etc, everything was correct. Wdym?
LOU is a fine game, but it’s not the bar for storytelling. I could argue ME’s story is much richer and deeper. I think the world building and gameplay is what makes the game good.
The story isn’t as interesting as the WD games or Telltale games in general like the Wolf Within. If you want to put it in a category where gameplay and story are well balanced, I would have to go with games like WD, RDR, or GTA.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a franchise blow it’s own knees off narratively so quickly than TLOU with Part II
They handled it pretty well, it’s a far better game then the first.
