This brought such a smile to my face, both the short film, and possibly even more so, the ballad at the end. This is how I imagined Terry Pratchett's work come to life on the screen. It had the essence and the true spirit of him. I wish there were more.
Not only was the movie itself a perfect interpretation of what Sir Tell might have writ hisself' but those who follow the dialogue closely - and who wonder when part two will ever be made - may be consoled by listening to the lyrics in the song which accompanies the credits - which do an admirable job of portraying the downfall of the remaining three Troll brothers. Absolutely sublime.
I love Cohen. Terry designed characters to have a theme to their humor. The theme for Cohen basically summed up as: "You can't win! We have 50 men and you're only 1 of you!" "True, but you started with 100 men and I only started with 1 of me. And my back was acting up for a while."
You know what? I shed a few tears during watching this. Picture was way more than just moving. It was truly Moving. The nostalgia is emanating through the screen. The nostalgia about the better times. Times when trolls were scary, heroes were epic and Sir Terry Pratchett was alive and writing a book every year or two. @@starlord8200 The girl clinging to his knee I understand as a narrative necessity and flashback to, or echo of, one of the very early Discworld adventures, where Cohen meets and marries a girl under very similar circumstances. Was it 'Colour of Magic'? ..can't remember...
I was perusing a Discworld thread when someone brought up this short film. They provide a link, and I thought, "Why not, let's give it a look". None of the official Discworld adaptations have given me the same feeling as reading the books, until this. The characters and the environment, the hilarious absurdity and heartfelt sincerity. That last part in particular. The core of Sir Pratchett's works is just honest heart, and you lot have captured that beautifully. GNU Sir Terry Pratchett.
@@Greensiteofhell it means he shilled himself and Cohen ended up paying way more than he should have.... alternatively, it means that he was trying to buy his freedom, and Cohen outbid him.
Well, unfortunately Terry Pratchett didn't make that one up. The "talking horse bids against new owner" joke is really old. In some versions it's a dog, in some versions it's a horse. I first read it in a joke book from the 1970s. But it's probably older than that.
This short film really is underappreciated and should be more known for making something that truly captures Pratchett's writing.. Having recently watched 2021's 'The Watch', I appreciate the work you all put into this sooo much more... Thank you for making this. (Your Cohen is PERFECT by the way)
Just found this, after decades of being a Terry Prachett fan. Amazing! Done with such charm, warmth and truth to Terry's story telling. Love it. So much better than any screen adaption that I've seen previously. Thank you so much. ❤
I love this, it starts out as a man trying to kill a moneter, then it becomes 2 men talking about how the world is changing as if they were down the pub.
*that's the thing about Pratchett novels...you start reading a story thinking it's leading in one direction only to discover the path was merely a distraction for a deeper and more emotionally impactful one you never saw the threads of that were being subtlety being woven at the very beginning*
When people say that disc world books are comedy fantasy books, it shows that they've only ever read the colour of magic. The disc world books are genera fiction, set in a fantasy world with a comedic tone (as no one in their right mind would describe nightwatch as a comedy), but the one theme which ties all the books (even the colour of magic) is "these changing times", and it's a theme I love so much. The original short story was great, a troll and a barbarian talking about how much things have changed, and lamenting the loss of the old days. Thus film was spot on, and it got me in the emotions. I think Terry would have loved this, and maybe would have asked why he didn't get a casting call to play Cohen :P brilliant work and I'm glad you shared it. :)
they call it comedy fantasy because a theme of changing times is usually assumed from fantasy books that people like. all popular fantasy is about how the old days were old.
It's not surprising that Pratchett wrote the story for a collection in honor of Tolkien. The theme of the Old days long gone and the times changing constantly underlies the work of both authors,
This was by far the best Terry Pratchett film I have ever seen ! Wonderfully touching, funny and layered perfectly....I want more ! We deserve more ! The visuals were perfect, the dialogue was stunning and the story was captivating. I must admit to being a little sad at the end, I miss Terry and his stories, we should have more of this to make up for the loss of the great man....well done to all involved in this production, you've done the man proud.

Still better than any movie and tv series I've seen over the past couple of years. All the love and respect for the source material is showing and I thank you for it.
I was fortunate enough to support this project. I've read most of Sir Terry's books, seen many of the made-for-tv adaptations, and seen "Run Rincewind Run" and "Choosing to Die." I'm not a super-fan, but like most anybody who comes across his work, I find him to be the perfect blend of humor, wisdom, and rage. I don't know how they did it, but Snowgum Films somehow drew forth Sir Terry's spirit to create this version of Troll Bridge (I haven't read the original short story). Like the best works of art, the film draws you in with the promise of (another) hilarious and exciting adventure. Before you know it, you are seriously considering the meanings of our very existence, as arbitrated by a troll and barbarian hero. Watch it (over and over), and support this production company. Go. Now. Do it.
Thank you, everyone single person who had anything to do with making or funding this. Sir PTerry is raising a glass in the Mended Drum while he watches is.

I don't think the voice is what makes a good Discworld. Pratchett wanted his works to be enjoyed by all regardless of how they saw the characters. The short works because it feels *so much* like Discworld, with the writing, pacing, and the lacing of deeper themes through the satire. Accents or no.
I can see taking pride in one’s nation and taking pride in the “works” from said nation. I don’t know Terry Pratchet, but this is good. I can enjoy a story that does not come from my country, and understand the pride that the author’s countrymen have in the story.
It's incredible - the troll looks and moves exactly like you would expect from the low budget. But the mimic... the expressions... they're top of the cream! 😊 And all credit to the direction, too - the actors and actresses knew exactly how to work with the dialogue. A great tribute and a wonderful work of fan-art.
The nostalgia was perfect. The picturesque setting felt isolating, magical, and perfect. I felt sad watching this...left me teary, but with a sense of timelessness. The loss of the past. Who would've thought...God bless Terry Pratchett. What a beautifully fitting adaption!! 💜

That kept us going so much. And even though we lost the race, he saw a fairly final cut and liked it. That nod alone was worth it all.

I love Cohen. Terry designed characters to have a theme to their humor. The theme for Cohen basically summed up as:
"You can't win! We have 50 men and you're only 1 of you!"
"True, but you started with 100 men and I only started with 1 of me. And my back was acting up for a while."

The nostalgia is emanating through the screen. The nostalgia about the better times. Times when trolls were scary, heroes were epic and Sir Terry Pratchett was alive and writing a book every year or two.

King Terry the Unique, first and last Ruler of Discworld.
Be sure to always remember his name.
What Cohen did next lyrics, took me longer than I like to admit to write down from the end credits, but worth it.
I'll sing you a song of a hero so bold
Exceedingly brave and remarkably old
He rode from the bridge
through the bleak winter cold
Just as the day was a-dawning
He wasn't the hero you've come to expect
With rippling muscles
and glistening pecks
But the size of his
boosebumps commanded respect
And his false teeth
should act as a warning
His false teeth
should act as a warning
I'll tell you of Cohen
for that was his name
A century in the barbarian game
He went to fight trolls
for fortune and fame
Just as the sun was arising
His motives for battle
were noble and pure
He robbed from the rich
now to give to the poor
Which included himself
he was reasonably sure
And that wasn't really surprising
That wasn't really surprising
For barbarians lead an exorbitant life¨
Carousing and quaffing
and looking for strife
Can empty a coin pouch as quick as a knife
And the price as of a loincloth keeps rising
With strange extra costs
that your old age can bring
Lineaments trusses
and that sort of thing
And fitting your saddle
with a hemorrhoid ring
To make your ride less agonizing
Make your rides less agonizing
As Cohen rode on
through the arable land
A small scrap of paper
grasped firm in his hand
It listed three targets
so he had planned
Just as the cock was a-crowing
It had already dawned
on his valiant steed
That Cohen whilst acting
with barbaric speed
Had forgotten that he
didn't know how to read
Barbarians don't have the knowing
Barbarians don't have the knowing
So the horse who is brilliant
it just must be said
Could not only speak
but occasionally read
He took those directions
rode where they led
Down where the river was winding
A neat wooden bridge
with a booth for control
Where a troll with a cap
and a badge and a bowl
Unwisely asked Cohen
to cough up a toll
You could actually
hear his teeth grinding
Actually hear Cohen's teeth grinding
It wasn't the cap that
drove Cohen berserk
Not even the troll's
rather feculent smirk
But the fluorescent waistcoat
the troll wore to work
And the "Safety First"
badge he was wearing
So Cohen went round to
the back of the shed
And opened the door with
the front of his head
At which point the troll
has quite sensibly fled
Leaving his gold coins for sharing
Leaving his gold coins for sharing
Then Cohen rode on by
the swift river's course
Astride his heroic and
quite handsome horse
He meant to get loot
using maximum force
Just as the noon sun was gleaming
He came to a lumber mill shiny and new
Where the forest was stumps
now and then just a few
And a red stripey tent
selling spider leg stew
You could almost see
Cohen's ears steaming
Almost see Cohen's ears steaming
The troll at the mill
would not answer the door
He had several guards
and had hired many more
To Cohen's delight they
attacked by the score
Just as the door was a-closing
For Cohen had heroing down to a T
He climbed on the pile
of their bodies with glee
As the girl from the spider
store clung to his knee
He stood there barbarically posing
Stood there barbarically posing
The gold from the lumber
mill safe in his grip
He spent a few ticks
relocating his hip
And moaned that his back
was now giving him gyp
Just as the mill it was burning
His ague and tinnitus started to buzz
His lumbago had always
disturbed him because
He still had no clue
what that actually was
And his chilblains
had started returning
His chilblains had started returning
The third troll a merchant
who they weren't aware
Was a combat accountant
gave Cohen a scare
By showing our hero
his folio of shares
And all his commodities falling
But Cohen too stupid
to grasp the essentials
Gathered himself and
with daring potential
Kicked the troll squarely
in his differentials
For a merchant that's truly appalling
For a merchant that's truly appalling
Cohen rode onwards
his bags full of gold
Remarkably brave and exceedingly old
He'd had quite enough
of the bleak winter cold
And bits of himself that kept freezing
So when the horse said
he thought that we
Should head for the coast
and the warmth and the sea
Cohen just this time
was forced to agree
That horse was really amazing
That horse was really amazing
I've sung now of Cohen
the greatest by far
So hark to my story wherever you are
I learnt the whole thing
from a horse in a bar
Although he sang it quite badly
It turns out the horse
was a folk singer too
He wrote the whole ballad
and swears that it's true
So now I am here and I've sung it to you
And now you can all applaud madly
Now you can all applaud madly

I was perusing a Discworld thread when someone brought up this short film. They provide a link, and I thought, "Why not, let's give it a look". None of the official Discworld adaptations have given me the same feeling as reading the books, until this.
The characters and the environment, the hilarious absurdity and heartfelt sincerity. That last part in particular. The core of Sir Pratchett's works is just honest heart, and you lot have captured that beautifully.
GNU Sir Terry Pratchett.
"Who do you think was bidding against you?" Just brilliant.
That was my favorite line as well.
I noticed that line too - what does it mean?
@@Greensiteofhell it means he shilled himself and Cohen ended up paying way more than he should have.... alternatively, it means that he was trying to buy his freedom, and Cohen outbid him.
Well, unfortunately Terry Pratchett didn't make that one up. The "talking horse bids against new owner" joke is really old. In some versions it's a dog, in some versions it's a horse. I first read it in a joke book from the 1970s. But it's probably older than that.
@@tehbonehead as a non native speaker that line totally flew right over my head, thanks for the explanation!
A proper Pratchett adaptation. *Some* people should take notes.
'The Troll Bridge' is far better than we deserve. Thank you, thank you.
Pretty sure he's trying to get killed by a monster... But yes that the general thrust of it. No respect for tradition these modern entrepreneurs.
Loved the bit where it turns out that the troll gave Cohen 3 addresses....

@@scottmantooth8785 Yup
As PTerry said, people mistakenly think that comedic is the opposite of serious.
they call it comedy fantasy because a theme of changing times is usually assumed from fantasy books that people like. all popular fantasy is about how the old days were old.
It's not surprising that Pratchett wrote the story for a collection in honor of Tolkien. The theme of the Old days long gone and the times changing constantly underlies the work of both authors,
I read this story years ago in a compendium of fantasy tales. Wonderful to stumble on it. Terry Pratchett lives.
Wasn't expecting this to have so much complexion.

Go. Now. Do it.
This is absolutely delightful.
And the song during the credits, just wonderful.

Nary an American voice or BBC bastardisation, just presented as envisaged.
Terry Pratchet is finally resting in peace. Masterpiece!
I don't think the voice is what makes a good Discworld. Pratchett wanted his works to be enjoyed by all regardless of how they saw the characters. The short works because it feels *so much* like Discworld, with the writing, pacing, and the lacing of deeper themes through the satire. Accents or no.
The accent is really the least of all the things that worry me about the BBC "adaption".
@@LonelyKnightess Narr... the Aussie accent works well for Cohen, just that little bit of a coarse edge to the voice gives him proper barbarian pathos
