An interesting fact is that in the last years of his life he often spoke of his intention to abdicate and "retire from the world", which after his unexpected death in Taganrog gave rise to the legend of "elder Fyodor Kuzmich". According to this legend, it was not Alexander who died and was then buried in Taganrog, but his double. They were the bad guys, God saved Russia in 1825, not so much in 1917. The Alliance of Salvation was composed of members of the Russian elite, who wanted the power to themselves. They were irreligious/atheist, something antithetical to 99,9% of the Russian population at the time. Plus they were Freemasons. They said they wanted to abolish serfdom and reduce military terms, not realizing that they existed for a reason. Abolishing serfdom in 1825 was impossible, from both the nobles and the peasants POV. Russian peasants benefited from serfdom, since Russia's massive territory made it impossible to have many small privately owned farms. Abolishing serfdom in 1825, would have meant a demographic disaster unlike any in history, since millions would have died within a year (if it were abolished then in 1825). This would have meant a civil war, and an alliance of both nobles and peasants against the would be government made of members of the Alliance. A great movie!!!! a Bit difficult to follow due many participans. Photography is very well done, good oversight in storyline, and the militairy aspect; the effect of grapeshot is impressive. The Hollywoon movie Napoleon is childplay in comparisson with this movie.
This movie is well done but it's hard to follow due to its plot not matching the reality. This movie was funded by the money from the state so the plot tries to follow the agenda that makes the Tzar's action more merciful and understandable while the Decembrists' motives seem vague and kind of chaotic, which is a shame considering how well this movie is made in technical terms.
@@NameNik223 Decembrists's motives were really chaotic and the revolt factually stopped the reforms. If you read the "Pestel's pravda", you will see it.
How is it "weak in terms of plot"? I found it complex and thrilling. It is subtle and pervasive and therefore deeply convincing in terms of motive and character. The plot is the first attempted Color Revolution and attempted Regime Change Op by the West of its natural superior and only global super-power, Russia. The one that surprised me in all this was Col. Prince Trubekskoy. His exemplary military record and his noted oratory and leadership skills makes his behavior hard to explain that day.

What are you talking about? The Decemberists had drafted several versions of the future Constitution and had a plan of liberal reforms. The movie doesn't cover this but you could at least check Wiki before commenting.
@@jasont4206 It's one thing to write, but a whole other thing to implement. Serfdom in Russia benefited the Russian peasants,(don't get me wrong, ofc it wasn't perfect) Russia's geography did not (and to this day) didn't allow for many small privately owned farms to develop, instead, multiple peasants (or even villages) worked under one landowner, and thus they had a secure market for their products( and for the landowner as well), and a stable constant income. That's as far as serfdom is concerned, as far as constitution, it was irrelevant, since all the conspirators were from rich landowning families and only wanted the power to themselves, the constitution drafts were just a ruse to attract liberals in Saint Petersburg.
Maybe it was fortune or luck on the House of Romanov that no one knew who the new Emperor was following Alexander's death. The entire Imperial Family knew Alexander wanted Nicholas to secede him, but the upper echolons of the Military and the Imperial Senate had no idea and still thought Konstantin was Emperor. Nicholas allegedly wrote to Konstantin to come too St. Petersburg to renounce the throne from Warsaw where he was acting as Commander-in-Chief of the Army of Poland but Konstantin refused fearful of being strangeled in bed as their father had been. This confusion I think muddled the Decemberists plot.

@1:49:22 -- When Trubetsky is questioned, "Why did you lead a revolt?" he answered as if he had led, 90 years later, the Easter Rebellion in Dublin. You know, the mere effort to establish a republic against autocracy, even if it fails, will light the way to the future. The leaders of the Easter Rebellion held out for a week, and were summarily executed, without trial, by the English. Here, the revolt was dispersed by the first use of force, and the trials and investigations lasted for the better part of a year. The Decembrists led the way to the assassination of Alexander II, who freed the serfs, and that of Nicholas II, to clear the way for the Bolshevik dictatorship and terror, which lasted until 1991. Martyrs do not always get what they hope for.
So called "Bolshevik terror" or "Red terror" was period of time in 1918-1922, it's an official naming, as a responce of Bolsheviks to multiple violent actions of various opposition groups in summer 1918, which led to Civil war. @19:05 --"By what law have we been sentenced?" The answer Prince Nikolai gave was, The Word of the Emperor is Law. That was the crucial contradiction, in the many pronouncements of Aleksandr Pervyi -- he wanted a constitutional regime, but intended to retain un-constitutional power in his hands. It sounds strange to us today to have someone say, "The highest will" and mean the Word of the Emperor, but "All-highest" was the standard term to refer to the tsar.
Until the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the USA, Kings were anointed by God to rule. It was by God's will, and God is infallible, that a person was born a King, a peasant (serf, different than a peasant), or a criminal. The USA declared forever that ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL and that ended thousands of years of Royal Rules. What would Russia have become if the Decembrists had succeeded??? Would the revolution that changed Rusia and the World have happened? Would Lenin have succeeded in his communist goals???

@sjb3460 1. Good that you mention that USA told only about MEN (nowadays it is somehow forgotten). But you also forgot, that they meant actually not even all men… no, not even all white men (hello Irish) :D They told only about small bunch of very specific group of men. From this point of view, in most kingdoms people had more right than in USA. Actually even in 20 century people in US had less rights than most people in Europe in 19, 18 and 17 centuries. 2. De facto first communist is Gracchus Babeuf, in is late 18 century, France. So, it is complicated to discuss what would happens. From one side revolution of 1917 directly have roots in this events. 1825 not gone, arrived several waves of revolutionists (main wave is 1860s) which in result born Lenin. But this is only one side, from my opinion not important. Who really cares about constitution and some "rights"? It is fiction which is irrelevant for life of 99,99% of people. Give nothing. From another side, Lenin build communism. And communism it is mainly about different things: economical system, real equality of people (don’t tell me fairy tales, that me and Bill Gates are equal, I’m dust, while he is God from Olympus), about property. So, even if revolution happened in 1825, unlikely it could cancel attempts of communistic revolution. Like nobody canceled it nowadays. If someone will propose it to me now, I’m will support, why not. But if you ask me, what I prefer: constitution with parliament/president or monarchy without any constitution or main law - I don’t care, anything, it is literally irrelevant.

In my personal opinion, this movie is a good one. The acting, the choreography, the music, it's all well-rounded. However, I think the pace of the plot is a bit too fast and the duration is too short; maybe if they make it into a 4-hour movie, the plot could've been deeper and more detailed, at the same time allowing us who aren't exactly familiar with the December revolt history to chew and digest the story better. If I'm to make an analogy, it's like being served a prime, medium rare ribeye steak and told to eat it under 10 minutes. It's doable, and the steak will be delicious nonetheless, but I sure would like to savor it a little longer.

A day before the start of the uprising, the gendarmerie arrested the head of the Southern Society, Pavel Pestel. The Decembrists decided to prevent the troops and the Senate from taking the oath of office to the new emperor. The rebellious troops were to occupy the Winter Palace and the Peter and Paul Fortress, the royal family was planned to be arrested and, under certain circumstances, killed. Prince Sergei Trubetskoy was elected to lead the uprising. After that, it was planned to demand that the Senate publish a nationwide Manifesto proclaiming the "destruction of the former government" and the establishment of a provisional revolutionary government. It was supposed to make Count M. M. Speransky and Admiral N. S. Mordvinov its members (later they became members of the Decembrist trial). The deputies had to approve a new basic law - the constitution. If the Senate had not agreed to publish the people's manifesto, it was decided to force him to do so. The manifesto contained several points: the establishment of provisional revolutionary governments
But their slowness allowed the emperor to gather enough strength and close them in a ring. I personally was in St. Petersburg and I can say for myself if they had started acting immediately, seized fortresses and set up barricades in the streets. Then the battle would have turned into many battles of 300 Spartans. The streets are narrow and the blocks are square. Plus, the Peter and Paul Fortress has an ideal view of the winter palace. They would have lasted at least a day. And at night, riots might have started and everything would have gone downhill.

How is it "weak in terms of plot"? I found it complex and thrilling. It is subtle and pervasive and therefore deeply convincing in terms of motive and character.

@19:05 --"By what law have we been sentenced?"
The answer Prince Nikolai gave was, The Word of the Emperor is Law.

@@juliap.5375 yes, but the idea has to start somewhere. you're overlaying the culture of today with the concept of 200 years ago. And now, we're "woke" and down some rabbit hole. "all men" was the first step away from King's divine Right of Rule. Then, more steps.

They play their characters like they are robots without feeling, just following a program.
Look to the english tv series (Hornblower) for an example in what acting should look like in my opinion.
46:38 is a damn cool scene. Such a vibe. Miloradorvich's character was really stealing the show for me.
I cannot fathom what their plan was. It seems absurdist in execution. What is also weird is how sympathetic the Tsars are portrayed as. Good music and brilliant cinematography. The time-cuts were an interesting device certainly.
Ваши ощущения вас не обманули. У них действительно не было четкой программы и плана реализации. Сплошной сумбур и романтические бредни. Никто из них НЕ МОГ научно разработать концепцию. При этом они пытались решить свои шкурные интересы. 😊
