    always enjoy watching your videos. I'm hammering ahead on my 37 with the LT1 swap. Some days it's 2 steps forward and one back. I had purchased a trans mount and center section for the frame. Before I welded the first tube in, I started checking and the upper tube interferes with the trans. The solution is a different trans mount that moves the tubes back a few inches. The part Is coming, and may I say, Most outstanding service from Paul Horton in Canada. When I sent him pictures he apologized and said he was sending the mount I need at no charge. I offered to pay for it as it was as much my mistake. The other challenge is finding radiator hoses. I found a source in CA that makes a hose up using various silicone elbows and sections of aluminum tubing. Not cheap but there was no way I would have found a hose I could have used.

    I put the Moser axles in my 80 CJ-7 Renegade about 30 years ago after spinning the splines on one stock axle. Other than seals and upgrading from ball bearings to tapered roller bearings, I haven't had a problem with the diff since. That doesn't look like a Trac Loc diff, which surprises me since the Golden Eagle is considered an upgrade from the Renegade and I have one in mine. I'm going to pulling mine apart later in the year, it's got 250k on it and I'm sure the clutches are dead and it needs new bearings.

      Interesting! Mine is an Open Diff. If I could find a Trac-Lok quickly cheap, I wouljd love the added limited slip. And now that I am this far, I am looking into possibly re-gearing. Let the research begin!!!! Cheers! Mike

    I believe the pinion bearing preload is only applicable to installation. After running for a while, the bearings seat better and wear-in causing most of the initial preload to go away. Just my two cents.

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  Год назад

      I think your logic is mostly accurate in that there is a short break in period where everything settles in. But I believe that there is a need for preload during normal operations. The initial preload takes in account that there will be some settling. After a year of running the setup, you would not want zero or any clearance. The slop would certainly prematurely wear them out. Cheers. Mike

      @dennis6325 Год назад

      @@UCanDoIt2Mike Agreed. I just didn't want folks to think if they don't have the preload on the chart that their pinions were toast.

      This AMC 20 is an 8.875, so it should be relatively equivalent to yours. Assuming that your YJ has the AX15 transmission.... I would be interest in what your RPMs are at 70MPH with the 4.88 gears. I haven't completed the Brakes on this unit, but am still leaning towards sticking with the Drums... This would be a good time to change over though. Cheers to you Bart!

  • @bobmcelver1484
    @bobmcelver1484 2 года назад +1

    Mike.........my build is pretty much identical to yours....LS, AX15, etc.....you're using a different transfer case, but more or less the same. Yes, eventually the 8.8 Ford is more or less a "drop in" upgrade (spring perch change) with rear discs (thanks for the mention btw). I have two housings now & a 3rd coming if I want it....all limited slip. The 4:10 is what I need but I can re-gear them easy enough if need be. Like I mentioned, the 8.8 is only slightly narrower (1-1 1/2") than the standard YJ and TJ axles I believe.......not sure on the CJ without looking.
    I've been a welder all my life (started with stick back in the late 60's lol).....don't be afraid of welding those axle tubes. Preheat the casting in the area of the weld after you clean it (350-400 degrees) and weld in an opposing pattern of 1-2 inch increments.....first one weld, then another 180 degrees opposite until you've completed the circumference.....keeping the axle hot. Focus 60-70% of your weld time on the housing making "sweeps" down onto the tubes in a weave pattern. (the tubes are obviously much thinner). Wrap the finished welded axle in a heat blanket when done and let it cool as slowly as you can. I built a jig on the last axle I did with a long piece of 3/4 threaded rod to keep tension & straightness on the tubes......worked great. Here's a link I found after I posted this ruclips.net/video/ZpjScr6Nfg8/видео.html

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  2 года назад

      Yeah... The CJ Narrow Tracks are 50.5" wheel surface to suffice, roughly 4" narrower than the Wide Track (54.5"). Your YJ/TJs are 60". The Key to that is I cannot just upgrade the Rear Axle.... The Front will need to be upgraded as well. While the 8.8 and Dana44 are great upgrades to the YJ/TJs, it is more involved with the CJs. All of that is definitely on my list to research further after I get this guy back on the road. However, after release this video, I also thought that I might consider new gears on this axle since I am forced to do a fully setup on it. I found a calculator that suggested 3.73 with 33" Tires and 2100RPMs at 70MPH. I also found a chart that suggested wither 3.73 or 4.10 to match the Engine/Trans combo. I am a little new to this part and need to investigate the limits of my carrier. If my elbow are already dirty, why not go into my shoulders!
      Thanks for the info on Welding the Tubes to the Housing, I will check out that video and probably will do it. I have the tools and with the proper instructions feel confident that I can do it. Cheers! Mike

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  2 года назад

      I probably am in the market. I need to do some research, but with the CJs the Front Pumpkin needs to be on the Passenger side. So a Wide Track Dana 30 would be the simplest solution there. For the rear, it will either be the Wide AMC20 with some upgrade, Ford 8.8, or Dana 44. How far are you from Atlanta? I do have a few Jeep Salvage guys in the area, and have not really thought to ask them for axles as I had planned to do that down the road. Always open for options. Cheers Mike

      I am not as familiar with that swap. Those transmissions are very similar. I believe if the overall length is the same… it would be a direct swap. I know that AX15s come in several length and input/output shaft specs. You need to determine exactly what you have and then check the AX15 for shafts , mounting surfaces (should be the same), and length.
