I honestly was hoping to see a standard budget rebuild that we can all do at home. They needed to refresh the engine....so naturally they dumped about $5,000 worth of parts and machining into it to appease their sponsor instead of giving what the title claims.

A little secret AMC I-6 have a second harmonic zone beyond the Red-line. If you can spin it past the breaking point fast enough you get into another level of stable harmonics that give you double the RPM peak. AMC experimented with that back in the 60s and 70s for racing. F class racing. The sound of an I-6 spinning at 9K RPM is something else...

👍🏼 Thanks for the AMC inline 6 content. I have a project Rambler Classic Convertible with the 232 2-V carb. OEM service manual says it’s rated at 155HP. However, you show me most likely to expect. I am very glad to see you can do an easy refresh on these engines and boost up the torque and HP. I also chose the upgraded 4-V, dual plane intake with small edlebrock. Exhaust manifold is not easy upgrade as on AMC cars the starter motor is on the left hand side, not right like Jeep. I am thinking about trying a 80s AMC Eagle exhaust manifold.

A few years back I had a '91 Wrangler 4.0 HO. I did a lot of the same upgrades that you did to this engine. I went a few steps farther and polished the intake/exhaust ports on the head/intake/header, roller rockers and lifters and like you, upped the camshaft a little. I also added a larger diameter throttle body and a few other goodies from Summit, 4WD Off Road etc. like a nice electric cooling fan and distributor etc. Nothing too extreme. Unfortunately I did not have a before/after dyno to see the actual results. But I can tell you that the good ole' seat dyno and even the MPG were a lot better than before. Too bad I sold it.

Also went with a Clifford intake and 465 Holly 4 barrel and 3 into 1 Viper Headers, also from Clifford and dual exhaust and glass pack mufflers. Even with just over 100,000 miles, it ran great. Put a Sun Super Tach on it so I would not rev beyond 5,000 RPM.

I had the 4.2 in my 88 Wrangler and it was higher compression that 9.2 to 1 I had to run 93 to get it running right especially after I put a bigger Motorcraft carb and stripped the emissions. Stripping the emissions and putting that carb on really opened it up though I could spin my 35 inch tires with stock 307 gears and bark them all the way to 4th

No disrespect to the new guy, but Mike has been around a very long time and I feel like they should have said something about replacing/ him leaving. He has a lot of fans that saw his start on this show and are going to all wonder what happened. He was always my favorite host because he was a young guy and more relatable. In any case, I hope he is doing ok and I wish him and the new guy the best of luck.

you could have cut some heads off some long bolts to align the head gasket when you were dropping the head on.. that was a bit sketchy

I agree with a lot of the other comments I wish there was at least a goodbye when a host moves on but I also understand that this is still just a job for them albeit a pretty cool one. I'm sure with time the new guy will get more comfortable and the show will continue to be great.

On the cylinder head and gasket use a couple of lengths of all thread, place the gasket and head(or what ever you are trying to mount) put in some bolts and everythings lined up ready to go.

Get the Aussie version with a 3.91" stroke for 250 cubes. I built one with 200 cube pistons to up the compression to 11:1, then ran a nice solid flat tappet cam, thick wall pushrods and a spring/rocker package to suit. I did a basic home port and clean-up job on the head then fit a Holley Brawler 650 mech-sec. Great carb. She propelled my ute into the mid 15-second mark. Nothing crazy, but on par with the might modern Barra motors which make 240hp! Thats double the factory rating for the poor old Ford 250ci Crossflow, haha.

Put an Offenhauser intake, with a Webber 4bbl on top and a Header on my cousin's CJ back in the '80s. New exhaust with a high flow cat and Flow master completed the minor mods. Really woke up that 258.

Cut the heads off some old bolts and screw one into each end of the block should align the head and gasket nicely.

Did some carburetor tests on my 86 Jeep CJ7 258. The stock Carter VV 2 barrel (variable venturi) leaned out twice for no reason and broke a piston each time. Change to an earlier model which was safer but still didn't run well. Bought the Weber 2v kit with vacuum secondaries and was severely disappointed. By the time the second venturi opened the engine was out of it's power band. Pathetic. Put a carb adapter on and added an Autolite 2100 from a Mustang and the power difference was huge. Smoother also.

With some head work and more compression 200hp is feasible. With rods and pistons and lightened flywheel they love to rev too. Together with the Ford 250 and the Chevy straight six, they are used in Argentina in a racing series. They are around 275hp at 7500rpm. They sound wicked too. Look up Turismo Carretera for videos
