Hey i have a 2012 vnl. Its not doing anything when i try to crank it. Its giving me this message along with check engine light. J1939 communication error with engine ECU. Any idea what could it be?
Question does the ground on the ECU screw to the block or on top of the ecu bottom corner?

Good day! Tell us the 2017 VOlvo FMX D13C 420 engine. Burned out control unit! can we supply with FH 2012? D13A 480
You have to see if they are the same hardware number on the ECU. If they are the same then you can use it. I think you can check with the dealer if you give them your vin number. Hope this helps! .

Sorry, The diagnostics tool is currently only available for Semi Trucks.

Hey Driver i know this a long shot but iam having a problem with my truck with j1939 data link erratic by chance can you tell me what you did do fix your truck and what caused the problem
where can I get ECU and get it program for my truck 2013 VNL D13 with Ishift.
From our experience only a dealer can program a ECU, You may be able to find an ECU from a salvage yard but it may not be programmed correctly for your type of truck.
Hey man my truck is a 2012. It was running fine with check engine on. I went on vacation for a week and when I try to start it the lights would come on, but it won’t crank at all. The only message i get it Maintenance required vehicle Ecu. And j1939 Communication error with Engine ECU. Please help me out with this if you have any idea what could it be

Hi Jose, We wouldn't recommend it as they changed the electrical systems in 2007 and they are very different compared to a 2002 truck.

After installing the new one .. does it need to be reprogrammed?
Yes the Engine ECU needs to be reprogrammed with Volvo Premium Tech Tool. This will reinstall the original file to the ECU. If you plan to reuse an ECM from another truck then you would still need to reprogram due to the configurations. Let us know if you need anything else!

@@otrperformance once you get a new ecu reprogrammed. Does that automatically reactivate your DEF? And would you have to get the DEF deactivated again
@@juanwaysniper083 Yes, the original file from OEM has DEF activated depending on your emission years. Hope this helps!
Can Volvo engine run without the ECU?
No it can't run because of the Electronic Fuel System that is controlled by the ECU. Hope this helps!
How much does it cost to replace the ecu
We wouldn't be able to give you an exact price as every truck is different. We recommend contacting a couple different shops and see what they would charge.
Will all the antifreeze leak out if I disconnect it?
Fuel will leak out not antifreeze... It is cooled by a fuel line. So no need to worry about it once you disconnect it. Just make sure you replace / reinstall the copper washers.
@@otrperformance Thank you for information. I bought new one but it requires be programmed. Can I start engine with it and drive to the shop where they will program it?
@@johnysilver1853 A brand new one will need to be reprogrammed if it's straight from the dealer. You can try to see if your unit starts after installation. If it does not start then you need to program it using Tech Tool. I still recommend doing a reprogram because all of your stored values off your existing VIN or ECM is flashed to your chassis ID per vehicle spec. Let us know if you need any other help!
