Super Double Dragon (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Tradewest's 1992 beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Super Double Dragon.
Super Double Dragon, Technos' final main-line entry in their acclaimed Double Dragon series, was released toward the end of 1992 to a fair amount of praise. It wasn't regarded quite as highly as the first two games on the NES, but It was looked at as a return to form after the middling Double Dragon III: The Rosetta Stone thanks to Technos handling development once again.
Unfortunately, it never hit the same peak as the earlier games did because it was rushed beyond all belief. There aren't any in-game cutscenes, the ending is a black-and-white text scroll, levels were missing... there were a number of things that probably would've been better if Technos had a bit more time to finish it, which makes how well it came out all the more shocking. Some of those things were fixed in the Japanese version, though, making it a better game.
You can find my playthrough of the Japanese version here: • Return of Double Drago...
I really loved Super Double Dragon way back, and I'm still very fond of it. In my opinion, it's one of the better beat 'em ups on the SNES. You get a variety of new moves over the ones from the old games, including the addition of the dragon power bar - when you hold down a shoulder button it begins to fill, and the move that results is a direct reflexion of the charge level. It's a neat mechanic that allows for a bit more thought and strategy, especially since those moves are the fastest way to stun an enemy so that you can grab onto them and pummel or throw them.
The graphics are pretty nice. They aren't the best you'll see on the SNES- not by a long shot - but there are some really cool backgrounds (I really liked the lit-up first stage and the airport runway) and even a few environmental objects (like punching bags) that you can knock about for crowd control. The music is about the same - the tunes are great and the classic DD theme is here, but the weak, tinny samples don't do them justice.
The controls are excellent - even though every button has a function, they're mapped pretty intuitively and allow you a great deal of control over your combos. It's not a game where you can just wail on the punch button and watch everyone around fall. It does run awfully slowly, though, and while this allows you more time to consider what you're doing, the sedate pace does make it a bit less exciting than I'd have liked it to have been.
Either way, even with its flaws, Super Double Dragon is a super-solid game that could have been much better, but is still well above average as it is. It's not as bombastic nor as engaging as Streets of Rage 2 or Final Fight, but it's still one helluva enjoyable game.

I REMEMBER PLAYING THIS WITH MY BROTHER BACK IN 1992 IT BREAKS MY HEART THAT I'LL NEVER GET THE CHANCE TO PLAY IT WITH HIM EVER AGAIN. R.I.P MICHAEL I'LL ALWAYS TREASURE THOSE FOND MEMORIES
My condolence, my brother. Big hug from switzerland 🇨🇭
Thoughts are with you, keep these memories forever in your heart. ✌
I feel ya 100% , my brother too!!
My truest sympathies for your loss, they say that if you never forget someone he never does! Keep those words as a reminded my good friend!
Sorry for the loss of your brother :(
It’s crazy how video games and their music stick with you through life. I often remember these melodies and think of simpler times! Being a kid was awesome!
yeah I had stage 2's music stuck in my head for the longest time whenever I went to the airport.
We grew up in a blessed time. When kids were kids and no adults perverted us.
I would get the music from top gear in my head
Yes nostalgie 🥺
May the elder gods protect u from living forest, 🌴😱🌴 kintaro, goro and motaro 😱...
This was the cartridge i recived for christmas along with a brand new SNES, in 1993...greatest christmas ever for me!
Its so cool to read all these memories about this game.
Same on Christmas lol
Me and my brother use to love this game. We played it all the time when we were young. Now in our late 30s this is a fond memory
I actually like Super Double Dragon more than Final Fight, though Final fight 3 is pretty good.
I use to play it with my brother too. That was awesome, I want to play it with my brother again.
30s as well this game was too slow. Compared to dd2 the revenge nes
Same here always go for the two player games so me and my brother can kickass together. I love the fact that it slow you can feel ever kick and punch and flykick. Iam in my 40s and want to get back in the fight the streets need us
priestskorge this game is the shit the fighting moves were great me and my brother loved this game too
I think this game is very underrated. The combat system is completely unique in the beat 'em up genre, and requires you to use strategy and counter attacks to be effective. The slower pace gives it a more tactical fighting experience that no other game has since replicated. Just imagine what Technos could've done with more development time. Also, the soundtrack is a kick'n up-tempo affair that gets the adrenaline flowing right out of the gate. Like I said: underrated.
Edit: forgot to mention how much I love the animation in this game. There are lots of little details in every frame that make you feel like a badass when you're throwing down.
Naw, its rated just right.
Its sluggish and could've been programmed much better.
SNES got a much more powerful system than the Sega Genesis. And yet what it produce was a sub-par beat-em up game, with a weak background track.
Sega Genesis did much better with the first _Streets of Rage_ (1991) and _Streets of Rage 2_ (1992), the latter coming out at the same time as Super Double Dragon.
Tradewest really dropped the ball massively with SDD, Im sorry to say.
@@willia3r Technos Japan, Tradewest just licensed it for US release. It's said this game is largely unfinished, but was released as is.
I agree with you. When I remember these old beat em ups I always think of this and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.
you can tell, the creators had a lot of time, love and money and animations that they put into this game, man i love this game
Agreed. If only the gameplay was faster and more fluid like Streets of Rage 2 this would be a goat beatemup

Bro has literally brought a tear to my eye..... I loved this game so much
This is the best Double Dragon game period.. The gameplay mechanics, the music, the style and the vibe is just perfect.
I'm still surprised to this day that we never got another sequel in the same style or heck a remaster of this absolute gem would be amazing.
Me and my friend used to play this game all the time on SNES! Whether you were beating guys up with your martial arts moves or smacking them with whatever weapons you could get your hands on, this game was a blast!
I'll never get over this game's counter system. I don't think any other 2D brawler ever did something this stylish, not even the later DD games.
Definitely
The arm lock is so stylish. You can really feel the impact of the guy coming in to smash you and you catch his arm and lock it
Wow bring memories! Me and my brother (RIP), loved this game! Can't get those great times back 😪
I remember being so amped up with the truck mission number 4 great music action at every corner amazing!!!!
This game was definitely ahead of it's time
Greatest game ever man. Thank you dad for playing with me as a kid!
One of the most challenging and formulaic beat 'em titles. On single player, you must know exactly what you're doing and how the characters movesets function. This is not a button masher. It held this game back from greatness but just like back then, I still appreciate the difficulty. The enemy AI makes it highly inaccessible for casual players of beat 'em ups. Two players made it easier but it wasn't exactly a cake walk if you're partner wasn't very good.
Needs to be remastered and re-released!
I agree, it should be on the current platforms.
Hell yeah. That double dragon neon was trash.
It kind of was. Look up "Legend of the Double Dragon".
I'm surprised it wasn't on the SNES Classic.
Remasters are always terrible. Just tweak a few things, like give it some cutscenes, and replace that weak punch sound with something meatier.
This game looks very polished. Smooth animations and a lot of detail to see here.
Imagine playing this game for the first time and saying to yourself wow these graphics are insane….what a time to have lived and see video games progress drastically with each console ❤
I still own this game. I remember used to play this with my father as a kid in the late '90s. Now, I can power through alone, no problem.
Kids today have it way 2 easy ! You used to actually had to rent games and had the whole weekend to beat the whole game until the late fees kicked in.
I remember my grandmother renting this game from blockbuster when I was 7 me and my friend beat it that night. Very good game!
@brett linthicum yes, he did. Stop being cool by being edgy and down putting and just reminisce.
Our grandmothers always spoiled us!
I remember this game when I was younger, it's been over 20 years ago since i played this.
I loved the music in this game. One of the best soundtracks of it's time.
Had many a great time playing this with my dad. Got my old snes back up and running, need to get this again and get the old man down for a game. Cheers for the upload.
The goons sound like they're throwing up when KO'd...
BRECH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Might as well have a text on the bottom of the screen that says "BARF!!!" Like in River City Ransom.
Buuuaaa
BBLLEHHH!
BOOWAH!
Really wished they continued up till n64 with this legacy
MISSION 4 MUSIC was my favorite in the game, and near the end, The Final Boss walk through wit his Crew like a G, but you can't touch him.
25:40
Mission 5 music is my favorite
Yesssssssss!!!!!!!
@@mario_survivor 💪🏾
But they could be.
in memory of childhood
This game is still pretty amazing
Agree
those simple games made more fun than hyped aaa titles from today, i think also because the most games are too easy to beat.
27:04 Nothing like the classic Double Dragon intro, huh? XD
My brother and I played this game all the time as kids great time RIP Jacob 🙏🏾
This game have lots of love and memories of my life. 💕💖 I use to get beating from my mom to not to pay this game.
Thank you for uploading fully game 💪💕
Tushar Parmar Its not full
Swear to god, same here😂😭 i want those times back
I always did like this game. Yeah, now it's common knowledge just how much was cut, but at the time, the game still felt complete enough to where you'd never have guessed how much was left on the cutting room floor. It certainly didn't stop me from spending a significant part of my teenage years attempting to beat it without using a continue (came close, never quite pulled it off).
I even like the somewhat slower pace; gives you a little room to put that (at the time) massive arsenal of moves you had to use for a little extra style. =3
Ever hear of OpenBor? Sort of the RPGmaker for brawlers. Well, a fan went and made his own remake, with all the cut stuff and more. Legend of Double Dragon, it's called.
This game had an amazing soundtrack
I'm crying. I cant, memorirs to me. Reminds of the good old times. No worries, being young, having good times, getting beat up by mom.. Shit.. 😭😭
Awesome to see the Super NES really stay true to its name with each of these early titles!
I used to come home from school in the second grade and play this game like every single day. That's 24 years ago now. This video makes me feel a kid again. And especially hearing the music.
One of the best games to ever come out for the
SNES…my favorite part of the game was when they do their own version of the Tatsumaki Senpu-kyaku (Ken and Ryu’s hurricane kick)
Stage 3 is really cool and that music is awesome
yesssss but i think i loved the music on 4 the best
I play this game and now have 35 years is amaizing
Still love this game! The attacks and counter moves felt more satisfying than most other sidescrolling beat 'em ups and the music is cool.
Deffo love playing this game when I was 7yrs old. Love the classic games. Totally awesome
This game brings joy to my soul man the memories
Bring back memories with both my brothers love this games
Gosh I miss this game... I beat this game several times.. the dojo area is my favorite... they don’t make them like this anymore 😊
Don't worry bro. I'm gonna make games like these one day. I'm bringing the old school back
@@therealog.1255 we’re counting on you!
Used to love this as a kid. That soundtrack is just amazing!
Even being as clearly rushed as Super Double Dragon was, it's still an excellent game and a vast improvement over Double Dragon III. If only Technos had had the time to finish it!
Anyone else stoked about the official US physical release of Return of Double Dragon on SNES later this month?
That's exactly what it is. It has more moves, more levels, stuff has been rebalanced. It's the same game, but it's a good upgrade.
Poison No, it's the Japanese release. It came out later there than the US version, so in the interim they continued working on it. We got 1.0, that's all.
Oh very nice. This is one snes game I have yet to get. I might have to look into the new version.
NintendoComplete Now that you mentioned it, Super Double Dragon should of been released around 1994 if not 1995. And since Technos went out of business means it would have to fall under the hands of someone to determine what it would look like if it ever was completed.
NintendoComplete Im surprised that you don't own the super famicom cart already ☺
one of the best snes games ever made! Good memories. God I miss the 90s take me back lol
Super Double Dragon is the most superiorly magnifcient game out of all the Double Dragon games ever created, there's a variety of moves incorporated therein compared to all the other Double Dragon beat em up games. I enjoyed the arcade versions of Double Dragon 1 and 2 tremendously, however, Super Double Dragon and Return Of Double Dragon on SNES remains the most splendidly superb video games in the Double Dragon series from my point of view.
One of the greatest SNES games ever.
This OST is super legit :D
I would love see a modern version of the Super Double Dragon game with today's graphics. They should also re release all the previous classic Double Dragon games for the new consoles or the Super NES Classic. I am still looking forward to the Nintendo 64 classic, Gamecube Classic, Wii Classic and Wii U Classic mini consoles.
No. The graphics are fine as they are. I don't want some horrid 3D rendered bullshit.
Look at gameboy advance version, is very nice.
@@DarkArynLand Well I will be sure to check it out.
For my, the best double dragón ever!!! I did discover it by accident through snes emulator, from the beginning I loved it
8:50 Wish I could do that.
What is crazy AF, is i actually managed to catch a knife thrown at me in this game. No shit! It was clearly some kind of glitch but dope nonetheless.
@@reppinseattle7974 lol no you just time the punch button right before it hits you hahaha
EPIC
16:52 my favorite music I remember this game I played it but never end it.
Double Dragon Collection November 9th brought me here 💪🏽🔥
One of the dopest osts ever composed.
the soundtrack with the Airport Level is a smooth ass kicking beat 👌
My brother Shan was 10 years older than me, and we used to play this alot he would always take billy and i would be jimmy. He passed away Feb 1st 2022 in his sleep. May God grant him Heaven and be in Peace. Thank you brother Shan for the beautiful memories.
Impressive. You didn't get hit until 5:40. What a pro!
I want this remastered and re-released. This was my favorite snes game. I still dream about it decades later.
The snes had the best music out of the consoles. Gotta love that early 90s charm this game was fucking awesome when I first got it.
I remember playing this game with my cousins back in 1995-1998… what good memories …
I miss the classics and cult games like that. Battle Toads, Turtles in Time etc. And 2 player modus. Who miss it too? I want it😍😍😍😍
I’m so glad this game finally is coming to the switch!I missed this as a kid, because I only had a nes at the time. This is the first time it will be on any modern gaming system which is kinda crazy if you think about it.
I wish I could play this game again. No handheld device seems to have this game. Best game of my childhood.
I forgot all about this game! Wow this brings back memories. I love this game.
One of favorite game
Games like these created bonds between brothers haha
Yes they did😢
El juego favorito de mi infancia. 🎮🕹 SUPER Double Dragon 🔥⚔🐲⛓🐉
Saludos desde Perú 🇵🇪 a todos los que se dieron el lujo de jugar este clásico.
the music on Mission 4 though!!!!
This game has parry move and a meter , so ahead of its time.
Also for those who don't know if you press down and kick Billy Lee will do a double kick that causes massive damage to an enemy.
The amount of moves you can do in this game is impressive. Lots of of beatem ups just seem to use 3 buttons (attack and jump). This used several combinations with block techniques and a charge meter for some big attacks too.
I don’t understand the development of this game but it had to of been several teams or severely rushed because one aspect (the combat) way over shadows everything else. No story to really speak of and no satisfying ending. Basically, just move right and destroy people. So I’m wondering if this had been developed with time and care how it would of turned out? I mean, the combat is really complex.
easy to learn, very hard to master. essence of good games.
I love this vidéo game!
I was so happy that I chose this as my first Super NES game. Absolutely great beat em up !!!!
Played the hell out of this with my brother. I remember they based their kicking style off of Jean-Claude Van Damme in this one.
As a Kid I would play this game with my mom. We would always get to that outdoor bridge and lose all of our lives not making the jump over the gap.
Amo este juego es de los mejores y todavia lo tengo😂
Que los dioses antiguos te protejan del mk2🌴 living forest😱🌴, wasteland etc, también shao, shao shan, shan y kintaro 😱
I remember playing this game when I was 4 years old on the Super Nintendo, this was my favorite game growing up
I also used to play this game ALOT with my brother back when we were 10 yrs old, loved this game so much probably finished it 30 times ! ❤
When he blocked that first sword swing
*LIKE*
Double dragon è stato il videogame che mi ha fatto innamorare di questo mondo.Ricordo ancora il nostro primo incontro nel lontano 1987 in una calda estate italiana....da quel giorno la mia vita non fu più la stessa, che tempi ragazzi!!
Looks pretty cool to me! BY THE *POWER* OF THE *DRAGON!!*
Good game with a bad ending. It’ll even stay at the “the end” screen and you have reset the system.
Remember playing this back when I was younger...I'm 38 now and if I can find this game Friday I'm buying it lol
This game only looks fun when you play it at 1.5 or 2.0x which is why, i believe, the DD games never reached as a high a popularity again, it wasn't anywhere close to other games in the genre by the time of SNES which were much higher pace
Always so satisfying holding unto one guy and just go at it. Played this with my brother growing up
I might have been about 13 years old, traded a bicycle, atari lynx and some cash for a snes console and this game at a swapmeet in El Cajon, CA. Good memories.
Man, I never got far enough in this game to realize that it becomes a pseudo-remake halfway in. Crazy.
The actual combat move set is accurately rendered especially for this period in gaming.
Just downloaded this off steam and finally beat it. Id always die on mission 7 when i was 8 years old
I had this game when i was a child, greatest game i ever played
That first level music kicking in is so awesome! I love the palette of moves you can pull off in this game; especially the counterattacks!
It was so satisfying to punch and grapple and throw and strike with weapons & stab & throw knives and flying kick + spin kick & sling shot the Japanese speed-bag thing in the dojo into enemies in this game.
My favorite double dragon game
Que recuerdos, siempre jugaba este juegazo con un amigo que falleció de leucemia ,grandes tiempos aquellos .
You aren't utilizing the double kick on the guys who are blocking a lot. It when you pres down and the kick button. They will block the low kick, but the upper kick will get them.
