Steve, keeping things visual for us with those mocks up is so effective! I continue to mention your name and teachings to potential carpenters I might hire to help me with a repair project. You, Matt R. Scott True and Jake Bruton are all a guiding light in helping with projects that I want well built. Thank you so much! And next time you and Jake have a chat, and if you even think of it, please share with him that his presentations about "Managing Expectations" was a game changer in my interview and working process with the people I hire. I cannot tell you enough how his presentation on this topic was exceptionally helpful. Thank you again Steve. From Prince Edward Island, Atlantic Canada continues to enjoy your presentations...and loves your architectural drawings with Big Red. 🙏🙏🇨🇦. ☺

If a roof can have an impermeable membrane under the shingles why couldn't we also apply an impermeable membrane on the walls in lieu of a WRB ( ex.water and ice shield) . The interior cavity should be able to dry inward if there is proper humidity control inside the house (eliminate any interior wraps: insulation only). Also if the insulation is substantial enough wouldn't that eliminate any condensation issues? Would this assembly provide a more bullet proof water barrier?

Thank you for explaining it so that a simple person can understand it I watch so many videos and one person said I’m not gonna get into why we use a rain screen and I’m like oh I need to know why we use it to see if I want it

Steve, I've thoroughly enjoyed the videos I have seen that you are in. Over the past couple years, I found VERY little detail online (RUclips or web searches) on how to properly vent the rain screen at the TOP of the wall and around windows. I am currently building my own Prairie style home, and have not fully resolved the top vent detail. I am using lap siding (Hardie) and I am thinking it will have a frieze board at the top with a generous rabbet joint that the lap siding will tuck behind. I am particularly interested in how to bug screen the gap, and how to do it with good aesthetics, etc.

How do you nail your siding to structure with the thick plywood and the rain screen?

What’s the benefit of this versus the rain screen or viceversa?

With these rain screen batten systems; when you need to replace the siding, aren’t you compromising your wrb as well if they’re nailed through? Would you not need to replace that zip as well? If not how would you seal it again in 20-30 years?

I understand the rationale for a rain screen betwen insulation and cladding. But what the need for and location of rain screen when insulated vinyl siding is used. Would a rain screen / air gap be needed and if so, would it be over the tyvek house wrap and under the insulated vinyl? Is the 5 perm value of the vinyl's insulation adequate by itself without the need for air gap?
