Nice video. Pretty interesting. When my truck was new I ran exclusively premium fuel in it. And then when gas started approaching $5 a gallon in Kentucky I switched to regular. I noticed zero difference but obviously I had more miles on the truck so that could have played a part.
Either way mine consistently now gets high 14s/low 15s driving to work and I’m approaching 32,000 miles (2022 with the 6 speed). So I’m pretty happy with that. I’ve not got to go racing in awhile so I don’t have any real recent towing data but it’s always been 8.2-8.6 mpg towing my 8.5’x24’ enclosed trailer on roads that are like roller coasters.

So here’s the deal. Octane rating is for knock. If the fuel your running, 87 for example, and there is no knock, there is no reason to change. The engine will run on an optimized timing degree. As long as it can run there with no knock, upping the octane is wasting money. There is more oxygen in E85, thus maybe a small improvement in power there, but not much. This changes with boost some what. But if a N/A engine recommends 87, no reason to change. Buy a good detergent brand 87 and rock on.
Edit: My 2023 7.3 shows no mpg difference between 87, 89, 91. Chevron 87 it just fine. Also run Costco, no difference in hand calculated MPG over the same route.

7.3 calls for premium to make peak power tgough

@@agentcarder premium fuel in hot temps to possibly guard against knock. I have no perceived difference in performance between any of the octane levels. Pulls strong either way.

You will usually get less power and less mpg's the higher the ethanol content in the fuel. Ethanol has less energy (BTU's) per gallon, so to get equivalent power levels more fuel must be used.

I drive 498 miles to work. Either trailer loaded, or loaded in the bed. Pending the load. 2021 gmc 4x4 3500, my best fuel mileage was a 2/3 87 Oct. 1/3 92 Oct. 19.6 mpg never exceeded 73 mph. So this is my regular fill. That 19.6 was a light bed load of 3600# of feed.

Very interesting. I'm a believer in running 91 or 93 if you can justify the added cost. My 24 is only at 130 miles, so still doing break in. My 16 half ton 5.3 (daily driver) with over 88,000 miles averages 20.7mpg.

I just bought a new 2500hd in June 2024 and saw your video. I looked in the manual I was given and there is nothing about octane in it, and the dealer said I can run any Octane (85 - 91). curious now about and would like to find out what Chevy recommends. I checked online and can't seem to find anything on this, any suggestions?

I wish mine got that good of gas mileage. Only have 2500 miles on my truck. I drive fairly conservative. I get around 10. Done 1000 miles pulling my 33ft toy hauler and got 7.5.

E85 gives you a power increase but at the cost of mpg. In my area it’s about 80 cents cheaper and I run it in my 5.3. Not sure why they aren’t offering it with the new HD2500

Hey,nice video, we have the same truck, I am starting put premium gas in it, it does drive smoother , and more powerful, I love the premium drive feeling.By the way,did you put oil catch can for this truck ?do you think we need to?

Thanks, I appreciate you being here. I've heard about people installing the catch can, however I've never put them on any cars. I don't think this engine needs one, but that may be a personal preference.

@@automotiveinquiries9673 The engine is direct inject type , so it may will has carbon buildup issue in the future ,the gas I am using is from shell V power premium, and been told it has some sort of cleaner will help the engine clean, I don’t know if that will helps. Or , I think it may too early to worry about that lol

    • @automotiveinquiries9673

@jimmywu12345 absolutely, on both points and I delivered fuel for years, shell is the best gas and they do put special additives in the fuel, not many others do that! Id buy their fuel over anyone's when it comes to gasoline. My son is a professional mechanic and says the build up on a direct injection is not a thing to worry about for many many miles.

The carbon build up would actually happen in the intake manifold and intake valve area, direct injection is injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber. So the only thing your fuel would be cleaning would be the top of the piston. I
have a 2022 , 2500hd gasser and I love it. Mine doesn’t use any oil and I average 16-17 mpg just back and fourth to work. Great video. 👍

Would 85 octane at high elevation act the same as 87 octane at lower elevation 87 is the lowest grade I can get where I live

    • @automotiveinquiries9673
      @automotiveinquiries9673  11 месяцев назад +1

I agree some states only sell 87 and up. I think 85 in these new vehicles with all the sensors would be roughly the same. But that would be interesting to find out. Luckily if 87 is the lowest, hopefully ots as low as our 85 and your golden. Here 87 is an upcharge.

    • @carlpreston1680

@@automotiveinquiries9673 thanks for replying I was mainly referring to the thinner air at high elevations so the engine acts like it has less compression than it really does so 85 octane at 7,000 ft Will act the same as 87 octane at 1200 ft above sea level and also with direct injected engines you can get away with less octane and more compression
