Make a Duplicate of your object and move that to Trash layer before applying modifier so that in case u did the wrong way u can work with duplicates you created in trash layer

I wonder if modifiers will be moved to a node based workflow in the future?
In Blender 2.92 the geometry nodes are a first step in that direction.

Applying a modifier bakes it in so no way to remove it afterwards. That is why one should only apply them when absolutely neccessary.
