The first time I heard a live performance of the Saint-Saens cello concerto No 1 was way back in February 1966 at New York's Carnegie Hall with the London Symphony conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky with Mstislav Rostropovich as the soloist. After the intermission they played the Dvorak Cello Concerto! Boy was I lucky. I remember David Dubinsky, the labor leader, was in the audience as were a lot of Russians.
What a bunch of tastless metronomical comments here - "he was old", "feels rushed", "not his piece" etc. It isn't rushing, it's called vigour, energy, fluent musical thought! Somebody even said even "he's rushing because he was old" - well, I have an old recording from USSR times when he was much younger, with some bad orchestra, where he plays so fast the last mov. that violins can't catch him! And you know what - it is such an exciting one :) Slava the best! Even At 70 years he still played great.
Very well placed. I had the privilege of meeting him in person in many occasions and even playing with him (I was in the orchestra) right by his side, watching him play this concerto, Dvorak, Rococo variations, Shostakovitch etc and talking to him. He is one of the greatest artists I've ever met.
@@bernardobessler7119 lol. Not sure for which reason specifically but I'll never forget it. There must have been about 80 people in front of me but the whole backstage was filled of people getting annointed by this larger than life figure of a man.
Beautiful performance of a gorgeous concerto- an evergreen classic! True the audio is not very good, but one can hear beyond that. thank you for posting. The playing of the La Scala orchestra is exellent- has real character.
For those who are asking. Rostropovich stopped practising in the latter part of his career and did some very rough performances in his last two decades. He was, with Casals, the greatest cellist of the 20th century, but his very best work was largely 1950s-70s. Both he and Muti are rushing and it rather spoils this wonderful concerto. Rostropovich is playing so fast that he even fluffs the very first phrase! Earlier in his career he recorded the piece beautifully. DuPre’s recording is also wonderful.
Never too old to express feelings, but perhaps simply not as confident, fearless and nimble as he was as a young man, but outstanding nevertheless and highly spirited. We will all be old one day and our abilities will decline. The spirit is there regardless. I heard him live when he was younger and had a class with him. He was inspirational!

70 years old - Rostropovich was born in 1927. I don't believe! Incredible!
это что то фантастическое,гениальное исполнение!все поет,какое наслаждение слушать!великий Ростропович!!!
The music is gorgeous as is the tone of Rostropovich and the orchestra. A very special performance.
Magnificent performance. R.I.P. Maestro.

Increíble!!! 👏👏👏
Многие годы не перестаешь восхищаться талантом великого М.Растроповича.
Es de una sensivilidad exquisita ,realmente Rostropovich es un gran interprete ...no hay palabras para explicar tantas emociones como sugiere
Thank you
I played this in high school, but there's no comparison with the master. I hope I can play this at 70!

So amazing….Wish the audio were better 😔
The problem is the audio
0:27 Allegro non troppo
5:35 Allegretto con moto
11:10 Un peu moins vite
12:21 Più Allegro
Unbelievably brillant - especially for a 70 years old Cellist! But maybe he should have chosen a different encore...

Why is there a goddamn ad at the middle of the piece!?

how the hell didn't this get almost any views?!
Because classical music began its long, slow descent toward Death about 1970, and nowadays is laid-out-on-the-slab, waiting for the undertaker...
@@CLASSICALFAN100 Fun fact: Robert Schumann said similar thing around 200 years ago. So did the classical music die?

Сегодня в этом Содом-Гоморе мне помогают жить Растропович,Кисин,Асмик Григорян,Рампаль и т.д.
This wasn’t really as good as some of his other pieces. Not critisizing him or anything. It still sounds amazing.
wrote sans on cello and this showed up
i love rostropovich but i don't like how he played this.
same here, i rather Leonard Rose's recording.
past is prime..

Better than any of us at 70 years old I promise you that
@@TheZgfzd only with your comment I agree! Not only us... Nobody plays cello like that at 70. He was a force of nature.
