@@margaretdenholme5530 Happy new year. I'm new to this channel I will tell you 98% of "reaction videos to THIS SONG is like no other) they just have to stop & they are not expecting this which is understandable. Now, yeah some people just do it and it drives me nuts, though with this song & hearing it for the first time, I give them a break, I watch every single one I can, loving some & put them in my Elvis folder of bookmarks, have one with singers I like, because the responses also fascinate me. 😊
This was a tribute to Martin Luther King after he was assassinated. He sang this to close this comeback special, he went against his manager and sponsors who didn't want him to do it and did it anyway. Elvis was trapped in Hollywood movie contracts for a decade in the 60s, he starred in over 30 movies and each movie he did a soundtrack of songs for..songs he didn't enjoy that were picked by the studio. In 68 he was sick of it and missed the live crowd and preforming so this was originally a Xmas special to show everyone he was back, Elvis was terrified to do this, that he had been forgotten. But he got out there and did this hour tv special and it was such a massive hit it became known as his "68 Comeback special" Elvis was 33 here, he died at 42.
Well said Belinda, You covered some of the exact important points I was thinking of. Was hoping you knew who along with Robert Kennedy and MLK Jr died and Elvis was incredibly heartbroken over. I know there were three he was mourning. You seen to be knowledgeable If this reactor knew the history of this song and why it meant so much to Elvis, he WOULD cry. I do not mind saying I tear up every time for around 27 years to this day. Best performance in music EVER and this was live and the final song after a long emotional and amazing show. Please watch the whole concert. I can not sing two of his songs without really losing my breath : )
So true. Ist army. Then movies. No live audience. Terrifying. It had been so long. So glad he did it!! Cant imagine if he hadnt. Thank God and THank God for Elvis
Elvis's whole future was riding on his performances during the '68 comeback special. Song's about Bobby Kennedy 's assassination also. Dr.King was assassinated 8 miles from Graceland. He really felt If I can Dream! Hit that very high note!
Elvis was drafted into the Army in 1958 and remained in the service, mostly stationed in peacetime Germany, until he returned to Hollywood in 1960. He was making feel good movies & releasing new songs, many from the movies, and his efforts always made money. But in 1964, The Beatles arrived in the USA, soon to be followed by the British Invasion. Elvis was losing relevancy in the new era. And he had only one #1 song (Crying In The Chapel, 1965) when his manager maneuvered a deal with NBC for what was supposed to be a Christmas special. It was taped in June of 1968, with an air date of December 3, 1968. Against his manager's wishes, a 33-yr-old Elvis played down the holiday aspects & made it more what he wanted to do. This song, If I Can Dream, was written for Elvis to close that occasion, as the tribute he wanted to sing to Martin Luther King, Jr (who was assassinated 2 months earlier) & Bobby Kennedy (who was assassinated during the making of this special). The entire special was a huge hit, and vaulted Elvis back into the brightest of limelights, reinvigorating his career. Over the next 9 years, he continued to build his legacy with sold out tours around the country. Sadly, he died at the way-too-young age of 42 on August 16, 1977. Forty-five years later, he remains the biggest selling solo artist EVER!!!!! Can't Help Falling In Love is probably Elvis' most beautiful song. I love his old rock-n-roll stuff, especially Jailhouse Rock. Lots more great ones to choose from! Enjoy listening!!
Elvis was years ahead of his time. Isn't this a song that clearly belongs in today's day and age? This was the ONLY time he ever sang this song in public. He went backstage and broke down. It was an incredibly sad time in history. MLK and Bobby Kennedy's assassinations were horrific. I'm glad you enjoyed this song.
I remember where I was when he died and that evening walking home so many windows were open playing Elvis records loudly. I have never seen anything close since, it really was so emotional. He was a one off. I am so happy to see a new generation appreciate him as really that is his legacy which will continue to live on long after we are all gone.
You got it. Best reaction I've seen to this song. Elvis was hurting for Martin Luther King and JFK and others. He wanted to stop the violence. He wanted to stop racism. He loved from his voice.
Wasn’t JFK it was his brother who was who was assassinated in 1968 Robert Kennedy …As well as Dr MLK .. He was becoming disillusioned with what the world had become in the 60s & 70s….He never sang this song again after this 68 special because it was written the night before & he believed in the song & it’s message so strongly.. My mum saw Elvis live in Vegas in 1972.. You’ve missed so many more great songs …
One of the greatest performances of all time in my opinion. He pours himself into that so much and the band is fantastic. They told him to do a Christmas song at the end and he said fuck you I'm doing this. High respect.
He came back after a long hiatus in Hollywood making 31 more or less forgettable musical films. The 1968 comeback special was a do-or-die event for Elvis and he totally did it, ending with this eternally meaningful song written just for him at his insistence. I also liked his more mature and professional look which seemed to respect the great seriousness of these lyrics and their civil rights context. Everything really came together in this incredible performance.
Elvis grew up. very poor, and in Memphis!!!!! He was very close to black folks! He was tender and dear to those "oppressed". Study his life. I fell in love with Elvis when I was 15. My parents would not let me go to an Elvis concert, but I adored his songs.
Ahhhh very good! This gives me joy and hope for the future. Elvis was a huge supporter of the civil rights movement and Martin Luther King. If he were alive today he would be honored that you liked this song and performance. This song is a turning point for Elvis. During the 50s Elvis was it icon of the youth revolution. During the 60s Elvis was an icon of the civil rights movement. This is the song that flew in the face Of his manager of the Netwerk who aired the concert and the television sponsors who were paying for it. They told Elvis that he could not do this song because of the racial tensions going on at the time - Elvis finally won out and performed the song and it is legendary to hear it today as it was during the race riots. Sadly it still holds meaning. It’s a great message and probably the best of the social justice songs ever.
This is a dedication song to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who had been assassinated two months prior and Robert Kennedy who had just been killed. Elvis was deeply upset about about MLK's death. After Elvis was honorably discharged from the Army in 1960, his manager had him doing low budget comedy movies but Elvis missed touring. He wanted a way to reintroduce himself to the music world so this is where the 1968 special came. Elvis is 33 years old here. He'd die 9 years later. Elvis felt his music deep in his soul. I'm suggesting a second time - "Suspicious Minds" and "Polk Salad Annie" from 1970 in Vegas. You'll thank me.
The song have direct quotes from Martin Luther Kings I have a dream speach from 1963, this song was written to Elvis as a dedication fro MLK, but also for Robert Kennedy both got assasinated earlier this year (1968)
We people who were living at this time understand his passion about this song. He was telling a story with his passion for what he believed in. He love this country and people.
One of Elvis very best vocal performances of his whole career, and there was a LOT of them. Elvis recorded some 700 songs and he had many gold records including gospel albums, Elvis loved gospel music since his youth. Elvis was also in at least four musics halls of fame.
It is his protest song for MLK. He passed away at the age of 42. The comeback was because he had been doing so many movies and had not been on the stage performing. It was originally intended to be a Christmas special. He went behind his manager's back and worked with a different crew and put together this show
Subscribed. Ya can’t get a much better a reaction to this song - Extra thumbs up for being young and getting the message. Elvis knew how to speak to young minds. What made him so different in that era is he spoke to young minds of all ethnicities. He knew the blues - he knew country music - he knew gospel - he grew up with all three and mastered them and that’s why he’s in the halls of fame of each of those genres of music. Not just rock ‘n’ roll. No other music artist not even Michael Jackson is in each Hall of Fame. And he sang about every day problems - Girls money death and taxes! Poverty, the ghetto, hunger desperation, racism, he covered those topics too. He just had that it factor that nobody else had. He had the look he had the feel He could sing he could play instruments he could dance he conducted his band on stage he arranged the instrumentations he produced the sounds.
Elvis belongs to the youth of the world. It's why he has a resurgence every 10-15 years. The younger generations will always find Elvis and I think that the internet has made it even easier as well as giving the original Elvis because he's now available to see unfiltered by anything else so they see what he was really about which leads to the moment of "getting it." I know I'll never forget the moment I finally understood why people love him so much.
Not only could he sing, but he had god tier stage presence, played guitar, bass, and piano, he could act (he was in a lot of romance movies), and he had a black belt in karate, kenpo, and taekwondo. He was the man.
You just saw Elvis sing with his heart and soul. He helped write this song for M.L.King Jr. After he was murdered. Before he preformed it Robert Kennedy was also murdered. One of his back up singers said when he left the stage he collapsed in his dressing room and sobbed. I cry every time I hear this song.☮️♥️
the if i can dream song was for MLK and Robert Kennedy. they had been assassinated. he was told not to do a protest song but elvis followed his heart. that was the come back concert with, trying to get to you song.
After doing four 45 minute concerts, he sings tis song. You can hear that this voice is raw, he is strictly singing on his heart. Good luck finding another performer like Elvis!!!
..brother, now go back and listen closely to the lyrics. Elvis was very concerned about what was going on in our country at the time, the civil unrest, the protests to the Vietnam war, the assassination of Dr King just a few miles from Elvis' home in Memphis Graceland, the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. He felt he needed to say something without making a political statement or standing in front of a press conference, his heart was aching as many were, so..as he did best, he opened his heart and expressed it in his music. He had no idea people would even watch this tv special but he took a chance to use it and it is literally one of his best performances and for alot of us fans, it is our favorite song he did. Thanks so much for your post! God Bless
So much pain in the 60's, so much rain . . . the assassinations of JFK, Malcolm X, MLK, RFK . . . civil unrest . . . civil rights . . . thus, the inspiration for this song. Be sure to watch the credits of the recent Elvis film starring Austin Butler. You'll hear renditions of some of Elvis' songs performed by contemporary artists. His influence on music and artists lives on.
Elvis loved to give messages in his songs. He was 33yrs in this show, he was totally drained & exhausted after singing this last song of his special ! Elvis loved his r&r but even more he loved singing songs of hope & joy and most of all he enjoyed singing gospel, he was brought up singing in church & singing to his mom. In The Ghetto is another incredible song. 💎💎💜💜💥💥
Elvis was shattered... absolutely devastated by the assassination of MLK jr and then he was rehearsing this christmas special his Comeback Special 68 and during the rehearsals is when the news broke that RFK... Robert Kennedy ... JFK's brother had been shot... assassinated and it was the straw that broke the camel's back. He was supposed to do "I'll Be Home For Christmas" as the final song of the special but he went ahead against Col Parker's ( his manager) wishes and did this song instead to honor MLK jr and Bobby Kennedy. After he finished this song and the camera shut off he dropped to the floor and just sobbed uncontrollably. He felt things so deeply, loved and cared so immensely for his fellow humankind... for the world and all the creatures on it and beyond that it moved him to try and whatever he could to make life better for all. And keep in mind this was a LIVE performance... no editing... no autotune... just his pure voice, heart and talent. Glad you were moved by it!!
If you feel this in your chest, just imagine how those of us who were living in the time felt in ours, This is his most powerful song he ever did because of the message and the time he gave it as a tribute to the reverend MLK just a few months after his assasination, I still feel it today as I did then.
Elvis was ALWAYS good looking, but I think he was his most handsome in his early to mid 30’s. Like during his comeback. Man he was handsome with a voice of gold! AND CHARISMA!!
When I see a young person watching Elvis and they get excited it makes me smile. He was only 33 years old when this was made. 42 when he passed in 1977. A Hugh career in such a short brilliant life. Watch Elvis and The Black community. You'll find a new application for him.✌❤🎶🎵
I just discovered this song this past year (I cry every time I hear this song) and now I’ve been binge watching reactions and I must say yours is probably one of my favourites. Love your passion. 💜
So glad you discovered what so many of us know--that the 1968 If I Can Dream by Elvis is the greatest musical performance of the 20th century. He was bereft over deaths of MLK and Bobby Kennedy, and this performance was all raw emotion. Yes, he's a man here. Thanks.
The very first Mike drop moment on national television. Those in the studio said Elvis walked on the set dropped this masterpiece on the nation and turn around and walked off the stage. The story behind this performance is pretty touching.
As a fan of MJ and a mega fan of Elvis. They can not be compared, register wise, beat, style, rythem, time and place. All adds to their own uniqueness. And thats why both of them are legends! King of Pop and King of Rock n Roll. Walking hand in hand 👨🏻🤝👨🏿
I’m a 80yo Australian woman and remember my father telling me that this performance was dedicated to Martin Luther King after his death and to remember this
Beautiful analysis of what might be the single most beautiful song ever performed on live television. Elvis was an amazing, but sadly flawed human. He loved all humans and he loved this country. And most importantly, he loved the music of African Americans and did a lot to bring attention to the cultural importance of their music. ALL musicians should be grateful for Elvis. He was THE KING.
Do you realize his total strength and love that he put into this song? AND ! Only because of his love of Martin King and the total message that Dr Martin King delivered to all of us !!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Elvis was born in 1935. His first hit song was in 1956. 21 years old. He was drafted into the army 1958-1960. He was in a tank division in Germany. Elvis then did 29 movies from 1960-1966. After acting for all those years plus the time he was stationed in Germany he had not been on a stage in front of an audience for 8 years. Hence, the success of this tv show, the performance was deemed his Comeback Special. 1970 is when he had his first Las Vegas residency.
I think comparing Elvis to Michael is cool. They both had IT and a lot of comparisons in the way they made themselves unique...clothing, singing, dancing, coolness. There are lots of great performers but only a select few have IT. This song and performance is amazing! Great reaction!!
What a glorious reaction! I sat with a big smile on my face watching you ‘getting it’. This is one of those songs and performances that stirs something deep in your soul. Fabulous.
This was Elvis’s response after the assassination of MLK. MLK was killed a few miles from his home and he was greatly effected by this. He was feeling it when performing this song.
Earl brown wrote this song for the special as an answer to everything happening then he sang it in the booth/stage in the dark in a fetal position because he felt it believed in the words! Thank u for playing it and FEELING it!
He was 33 yrs old in 1968, and had spent the 1960s doing about 3 movies a yr, and releasing movie soundtracks and had not performed live since 1960. This was a hr TV special, that was originally called The Singer TV special, sponsored by Singer Sowing machines. After it aired huge praise came from the music critics, and since the show has been called Elvis 68 Comeback Show. Elvis first yr on the RCA record label, was 1956 when he was 21 yrs old. He made several appearances on TV Variety shows, which back then were filmed in black and white. One of those shows, 82.6% of TV viewers watched because he was the talk of the Nation. He also was given a movie contract, and did his 1st of 31 movies in 1956. He was considered vulgar back then by many adults, because of the way he moved on stage, and some shows just filmed him from the waste up. Watch Elvis at age 22 sing and dance to Jailhouse Rock, from the movie Jailhouse Rock as many consider it the first music video.
He went in the army and served while the Beatles came on the scene and when he came home after serving he did the 68 comeback special and blew away all the competition hands down
You need to watch the Documentary "Elvis, The Searcher". The man had so much talent that was wasted. It is so sad to think what he could have done had he just been treated better.
Yes yes that's what it about. The thing you can't describe but feel in your chest and brings you to tears...THATS PURE ELVIS...THATS what he had AND more....keep going. Try suspicious minds live Las vegas 1970...
The reason you can't compare them. They are both kings. One is King of rock and the other king of pop. They sang different music and had different styles. Rest in peace Elvis and Michael.
It was a comeback special because Elvis was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He was already a huge celebrity by that time and put his career on hold to serve his country. When he returned he became an actor and Hollywood kept him busy for many years. In 1968 he returned to his first love of singing and performing live onstage. On stage, Elvis had swag. At sometime you should react to Love Me Tender 1970 live. Before that you should like many others have suggested watch “Elvis and the Black Community”. It will give you insights as to what music influenced him. You’ve earned my subscription.
Actually Elvis was drafted in 1958 and served 18 months in Germany, not Korea. Also, Elvis was already an actor before joining that army, having completed 4 of his best movies before his call up.
Fantastic Reaction!! And you're not wrong to compare Elvis to MJ. They were both the kings of their specific eras. They both made an impact on the society of they day.
chills! nice review, sir. Elvis had command over every muscle in his body and moved in time with the music. He felt it up in his head and in his body. This song was written especially for him, after the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy & MLK. He actually had MLK's speeches on record album and in print and studied them. The man was deeper than the deepest ocean.
This is also my favorite Elvis song… His heart, soul and strength were in it, and I adore your reaction to it. That’s exactly how I feel. It’s like a song that gets your heart and soul and takes you to the highest level of emotion. Thanks for sharing!
OMG WE DID IT

God Bless
This song makes me cry every time I hear it the passion that he has is out of this world NO ONE will ever be better than Elvis The forever King!
I love the way you appreciate this wonderful man. Vocals are amazing!!!!!!!!!
It was the King's first TV appearance for more than eight years and is regarded as one of his best performances.
One of the greatest voices of all time. R.I.P Elvis Presley
ELVIS always been a complete one package ! he had it all !
One of the single greatest live performances ever.
If you feel this in your chest, just imagine how those of us who were living in the time felt in ours, This is his most powerful song he ever did because of the message and the time he gave it as a tribute to the reverend MLK just a few months after his assasination, I still feel it today as I did then.
This is Elvis's greatest performance. And is one very hard song to sing!
You'll find a new application for him.✌❤🎶🎵
Application??? Or did you mean appreciation
@@wolf-1346 yes appreciation.
Anything from the 68 comeback special is GOLD!
I’m lucky to have it in vinyl and it’s beautiful
I can't stop watching it. Just discovered it after the Elvis movie
I just discovered this song this past year (I cry every time I hear this song) and now I’ve been binge watching reactions and I must say yours is probably one of my favourites. Love your passion. 💜
THANK YOU!!!
So glad you discovered what so many of us know--that the 1968 If I Can Dream by Elvis is the greatest musical performance of the 20th century. He was bereft over deaths of MLK and Bobby Kennedy, and this performance was all raw emotion. Yes, he's a man here. Thanks.
He is 33 yrs old but died at 42. Him & his music still lives on today in everyone. Elvis is & will forever be “THE KING”
Thank you Thank you very much. God bless you young man love your reaction to The G.O.A.T. Mr Elvis Presley, wow 👌 😢Rip Elvis,🌹💐🇵🇷🇺🇲😇TCB ❤ 🙏
The very first Mike drop moment on national television. Those in the studio said Elvis walked on the set dropped this masterpiece on the nation and turn around and walked off the stage. The story behind this performance is pretty touching.
Also check out Elvis and the black community. I'm 64 and living in the times of it, it was a great eye opening for me. We all learn something new.
The way his eyes flutter when he sings "deep in my heart", you know he was truly connected with his heart! (5:13)
This is 1968, he was born 1935. He was 33 years old. Died at 42, 1977
Miss and love ya ALWAYS ELVIS
The King!
Ahhh now u get it young man !! Enjoy
This right here is why this great man is the KING ❤
Love your reaction, what a lovely young man you are. 💕💕Hello from Australia.
I'm glad you liked this like I do. It's definitely my favorite of all of his songs. He puts his heart and soul in it, no holds barred.
Elvis was sent by god.the man is perfect.sending a message
The King! The one and only.
I’m a 80yo Australian woman and remember my father telling me that this performance was dedicated to Martin Luther King after his death and to remember this
This was his comeback to live performing. He was 33 years old. Elvis died at the age of 42.
That's what I want to see, a perfect Elvis reaction. I want more of that.👌
Do you realize his total strength and love that he put into this song?
He first started to catch on in 55.
His first movie was Love Me Tender...in 1956. The Holy Spirit was in Elvis.
Elvis the one and only 👑💯 So beautiful inside and out.
The meaning of the song is beautiful!..He dreamt the Unity
Keep diving!! Elvis is an experience 💜
This is Elvis at his best, sing from his heart, for a cause.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊🌏
Elvis was born in 1935 and he is 33 years old when he made this video and sang this beautiful song... If I can Dream ... In 1968
He was 33 yrs old in 1968, and had spent the 1960s doing about 3 movies a yr, and releasing movie soundtracks and had not performed live since 1960.
He was doing movies for ten years. This was a tv special. 68
Love MJ and Elvis!!👍👍🎸🎼❤
Love this song 🎵❤
OMG..Powerful!! Simply Beautiful!!
That's why I love ELVIS 💘
שיר מדהים מאוד מרגש❤❤❤❤אהבתי את התגובה🤘🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍🫶🫶🫶🫶
He went in the army and served while the Beatles came on the scene and when he came home after serving he did the 68 comeback special and blew away all the competition hands down
Yep.
You need to watch the Documentary "Elvis, The Searcher". The man had so much talent that was wasted. It is so sad to think what he could have done had he just been treated better.
Check out Elvis live in Las Vegas singing "Love Me Tender." I call it "The Dog of Elvis," you'll understand why after you check it out.
Yes yes that's what it about. The thing you can't describe but feel in your chest and brings you to tears...THATS PURE ELVIS...THATS what he had AND more....keep going.
Try suspicious minds live Las vegas 1970...
Just wanted to say I love this guy who is hosting this thank you for bringing the kings music back to life
Elvis was singing with great passion...singing with all his heart body and soul.....
Elvis was in the army!
The reason you can't compare them. They are both kings. One is King of rock and the other king of pop. They sang different music and had different styles. Rest in peace Elvis and Michael.
The King.
You’ve earned my subscription.
yess react elvis and the black community and make sure to watch part 1 and 2 !
Actually Elvis was drafted in 1958 and served 18 months in Germany, not Korea. Also, Elvis was already an actor before joining that army, having completed 4 of his best movies before his call up.

Thank you.
I see so much disinformation in Elvis comment sections.
It's always nice to see someone provide
actual facts ❤️
@@sallycook I believe in Germany is where he met Priscilla for the first time, age around 14…..her father was stationed in Germany as well…
@R. Andromeda very interesting, thanks!
Fantastic Reaction!! And you're not wrong to compare Elvis to MJ. They were both the kings of their specific eras. They both made an impact on the society of they day.
This song was a tribute for Martin Luther King when he got killed in in Memphis. It hurted him deeply 😔 RIP Elvis, and Martin, ❤🙏
Отлично провела эти 8:22 минуты! Спасибо за отличные эмоции💛
Excellent reaction….Elvis touched us all. This song was written for Elvis in dedication to Martin Luther King
chills!
nice review, sir.
No auto tune on his voice that's his real voice and tribute to MLK GOD BLESS EVERYONE🙏🙏🙏😇😇😇❤️❤️❤️
This is also my favorite Elvis song… His heart, soul and strength were in it, and I adore your reaction to it. That’s exactly how I feel. It’s like a song that gets your heart and soul and takes you to the highest level of emotion. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much young man! Great reaction.
My favorite song he ever sang. I remember watching this I was young girl and I cried. Now that I know the back ground to this song. I love it more ❤
Walk a mile in my shoes, live in Vegas in the 70's and Amazing Grace live 77
There you go love love your reaction. Elvis has everything. Nobody sang like him with more passions and feeling. More please 💕💕💕💕
He was 42 yrs. old when he died in August 1977. He was the King!
Thank you for playing Elvis Presley love it 🙏🙏👍❤️
Wow, Elvis!! ❤❤❤ Love your reaction, you get him!!! Amazing to see your love and respect for his talent! Thank you!
I love your reaction and respect for Elvis.
