You are right. It will and It does get better. I’m glad you found this video. There are people out there who love you as you are. And give your dad time. It sometimes takes time for people to come around. My family came around after some time. Happy Pride.
That childless mother found a whole bunch of babies who needed her love, and they found a mom who would fight for and beside them. I love this so much.
EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS!!!! The set-up scene! The vocals! The costuming! The _complete turnaround in meaning for the Javert part!!!!_ I actually cried at the end. As someone who wished desperately to play Gavroche as a kid and who now one day hopes to be one among a hopefully vast (come on, theater industry, you can do this by the time I'm good enough to audition, it isn't hard) number of future transman Javerts, this rendition means a lot to me. We have a horrifically and absurdly long way to go for liberation, but that does not mean we can give up or that we can't or haven't made indisputable progress. We have always been here. We will _always be here._ We are an immutable feature of organic life and the human species. The conviction that radiates from every performer in this video is absolutely emboldening. It may seem silly and frivolous, but this gives me hope.
Why is it that every trans masc Les Mis fan I know wanted to be Gavroche and now aspires to play Javert? Every single one? Myself included, of course. Stars is my standard audition number.
I'm not gay and I'm not French, and yet I am moved to tears. The armies of hate, which have gained beachheads in so many red states, MUST be defeated, and this gives me hope that they will.
Your allyship is seen and very very much appreciated. Your son, will hopefully feel more secure in discovering his place as a man and the man he wants to be, with your love and support.
Eponine has always been my favorite, and I was expecting that one part to fall flat. But, my God, it was beautiful. Beautifully sung, beautifully emoted. I am in love once more. The entire production was beautiful, but to see Eponine given the justice the character deserves is making my heart soar. Not an easy part after all to try to follow in Lea Salonga's shoes vocally.
Eponie lonely song was the anthem of my lonely teenage years, i love how fitting this interpretation was because the feminine dudes still often go unseen in terms of love within the gay community
This moved me to tears. I’m the adopted daughter of a transgender parent. We lived in a small town and it was in the mid 1980s, when this fact was brought to light during an ugly divorce. Nobody there even understood what transgender meant. Today, it’s recognizable, and has become part of this coalition. I love my parent very much and she has surgically transitioned and I think she is incredibly brave. Love and support to the entire community and to paraphrase the late Senator Edward Kennedy, “still the fight goes on and the dream shall never die”
Revisiting this video for a little reminder in the light of recent election results. If anyone reading this is feeling hopeless right now, please remember that we can and will fight. Please keep fighting. Don't give up. You are loved.
Omg I saw this on Tiktok but I had no idea how good it was with the framing of the opening scene. This is INCREDIBLE. The fact that you called out the Proud Boys EXPLICITLY. I can't. The Valjean and Javert of it. This is THEATER.
Lol I can’t even lie, I was cracking tf up just bc it was SO DRAMATIC and literally SO ACCURATE to how all our meetings used to be, back in the (very) early 2000’s. I swear, all of our disagreements (basically every other sentence) could have been a script for a progressive version of “Dynasty” 🤣 ah, I miss having so much passion, but I REALLY miss the belief that things would change where I live. RIP my blissful ignorance.
It was amazing. One of my favourite parts because I’m like the mom and am more adventurous in my agitation for change than my more risk-averse spouse. I hope he’ll similarly come around.
Wow that exchange between the married couple hit hard. Brilliant acting from the whole cast. Just about 10 minutes to tell a whole moving story with fleshed out characters, and perform a classic musical number in a new contemporary light. Brilliant cast and writing. I am speechless.
OMG you guys, I thought this was going to be like a "Miscast" performance and I was thinking: "This should be perfect while I eat my sandwich." Several bites into my sandwich (and a few minutes in the vid) I realize this is a dramatic performance. And then when the mother broke down, I had to put my sandwich down! Then when I heard the dad speak the words at first instead of singing, full body chills, tears. Also: would like to mention this entire experience was amplified by an edible.
"One day more" makes me shed a tear every time they start to wave the flag (and I'm not even French). Haven't thought it would be possible to be moved by this song even more than usual. But this? This left me sobbing on the floor. happy pride everyone
I’ve been talking with my friends for a while that there should be a modern retelling of Les Miserables set in modern day America. This is what I meant by that. Thanks for making this.
This song always gets me in the gut anyway but applying to this situation just makes me sob uncontrollably. 40 years ago I was one of the young men going off to march. For a while things looked like a brighter future was dawning, but suddenly we are back to this point again. Continue the good fight...for at least One Day More!
There is no way we would be anywhere close to where you are without you and your generation of fighters. Many of us grew up with supportive elders of some kind, whether in our lives or on screen, and much/most of that is down to you guys. We're strong enough to fight this shit because we stand on the shoulders of giants.
I'm 68 years young. Before marriage and kids, before I had met my husband (now deceased), I used to be a "cover date". This was in the mid to late 70's. Stay safe!❤❤❤
I was the “cover date” for my friend for all his office parties. I get it. I’m nonbinary but didn’t know the word for it. He had been ignored by his father (accepted by his mother) since his boyfriend outed him in HS.
Anything opened by Jenn Colella is bound to be amazing. This is so beautifully done! The story, the emotions, the vocal powerhouses! So much talent on one stage! I am a music major and after several years, very few songs or performances make me emotional. I am happy to say I was covered head-to-toe in goosebumps and crying by the end of this spectacular performance! I hear you. I see you. I love you as my siblings. I am glad you are here! Happy Pride from a proud ally 🌈❤
I saw a clip of the end of the song a while back and that alone was so powerful. I was not prepared for how moving and powerful the full piece would be. This retelling is needed with everything happening right now. Thank you Broadway Cares for producing it!!
I love this so much. I was not expecting to cry, but this song and the message these performers so passionately performed, brought me to tears. Happy Pride everyone!
Wow. I really love how you managed to so perfectly establish your cast of characters in the relatively short initial scene such that all of them were completely different from Les Mis, but the song still fit like a glove. Speaking of fitting like a glove, that Eponine voice in the song, tho…
i am the biggest les mis fan u will ever meet and this is absolutely AMAZING!! I like how they changed the context of Javert's and the inn keeper's lines to fit the context, it was just so so so well done
first of all: i love the concept, i love the costumes, the adaptation choices are interesting, there are some really outstanding performances (eponine!), the emotional resonance worked for me, unlike some others i think one day more was a clever choice because it gives almost all important characters a solo part and combines different musical themes, whereas do you hear the people and drink with me are mostly chorus songs. i wish the part for enjolras had actually been properly adapted to the performer because it was just slightly our of their range and that made parts of it sound unclean. i also feel like the acoustics didnt really work on tape, as the volume of both instrumental and singing seem to shift. it honestly sounds to me like compression or automatic noise elimination in the mic. live performances are always hard to record audio-wise, musicals especially. that said, i find some of the criticisms here silly. of course the song doesn’t fit 100% cause it wasnt written for this, that's what creates subversion. it's like non of y'all have ever been in a jukebox musical! i think most of the choices when it comes to the song were really creative, the libretto didn't do it for me but i find that less important. so a couple vocal performances could have sounded cleaner, but this is not a studio recording and some of these actors are unfortunately singing out of their range. they also probably didnt rehearse for months like full proper broadway musicals do. honestly unless youre a vocalist yourself and have done this before, i think you should soften your harsh criticism. bc i spent half my life on stages and i can tell you that even fantastic, seasoned singers can give a subpar performance, especially when there's bad acoustics, they can't hear themselves properly, or their part isn't quite in their range. these people clearly all display good technique, sometimes that just doesnt save you. also ..... this is literally a charity event. can we keep that in mind? ETA: i am always down for a good dragging when people just genuinely suck technically, but none of these performers do. their technique is good, they have proper breath control and support, they all have parts that sound very clean and the parts that don't sound out of range. it's very hard to sing out of range and it never sounds good.
First I just want to say that I am genuinely happy that so many people found joy and took strength in this performance. I didn’t love it but that doesn’t mean I’m not happy for those who did. I am all for using songs subversively- that’s what Broadway Backwards is all about. I just don’t think this one was done *well*. I get that some of the lyrics won’t fit, but the problem is that they just didn’t seem to fit the narrative they came up with. I thought it was an odd choice to put the straight couple front and center- even if it was in relation to their son and their journey of acceptance. I didn’t think it made sense to set up the lgbt+ community as the revolutionaries then have the dad/Javert referring to the proud boys (I think?) and their actions as the revolution they had to ‘nip in the bud’. It has been mentioned in other posts but I’m not a huge fan of shaming people for not being out, so the Marinus/Cosette part didn’t land for me. (I absolutely agree about the Eponine part- they really killed it!) The fact that the Thenardier part could be read as casually fat-phobic has been mentioned too. I just that it was kind of a lazy plot point to say he just wanted swag or that the Mme. Thenardier was there for the food. They could have done a lot more to make them truly antagonistic- like have them threaten to our people or blackmail them. I didn’t mind some of the vocals being pitchy- I absolutely get what you mean about it being a live performance and for charity. I just think there is room for people who loved this as well as those who loved the idea but not the result :)
As long as I can remember I have heard this song in my head when I thought of the meaning of gay pride. It's standing up to your oppressors and being able to live your life without fear of violence from hate. Yes, Hearing/Seeing this song performed with an interpretation that speaks to my soul was overwhelming to tears. Thank you so much for bringing this to life!
S o b b I n g 😭😭😭 I've known this song since 1987. I've seen it performed probably hundreds of times. I've never FELT the urgency of it until now. Happy Pride, everyone.
As a trans man who just played Grantaire in a school edition of this show, this means a lot. I hope to one day do a production of Les Mis professionally, because it means so much to me and my identity. But damn this was incredible. Thank you for creating this incredible piece of art
I’m a trans man, wasn’t out in school but would’ve absolutely loved to play any of the barricade boys. That’s exciting! I hope you had a great time playing Grantaire
Wow. I’m weeping, and I join you at the first of many Pride Month events tomorrow with our lgbtqa chorus even here in Kentucky! We sing because we must! ❤
Easily my new favourite video, tears were streaming down my face by the end! I love how far we have come over the past few years, I can’t wait to see what the futures like for us! Also happy pride month everyone, love you all ❤️❤️
And how far we still have to go, if Florida, Texas, Montana, and a bunch of other states get their way. I am already starting to hear conservatives bringing up AIDS again as justification for their increasing atrocities against our communities, so a new ACT-UP may soon be needed.
I don't know how many times I've heard this song... yet I'm still crying watching this. Masterfully done! Beautiful voices. Amazing acting. Thank you! I hope this goes viral.
I got really emotional when the dad came back in and was supportive! I cried. This is amazing! Even though I am not the biggest les mis fan I’ve always loved this song, it’s so good to see it used in such a good way
I need a full musical of this immediately I’m already hooked on all of the characters! This is so powerful! My eyes are sweating profusely Happy pride friends 🏳️🌈❤️
That was incredibly powerful. Thank you so much for everything. To my fellow LGBTQ+ people, we will keep fighting and we will not just survive but thrive
I absolutely loved this and felt every emotion that was given in this. I was in a production of Les Mis and our version of One Day More has nothing on this.
There’s me thinking that they’re flying the flag upside-down because one of the stage hands made a mistake - but no, it turns out that flying flags upside-down is considered an international signal of distress/cry for help. Brb, crying…
4:34 had me bursting out in tears. i'm so glad i'm not living in the us but things have been getting so bad all over the world and i'm keeping hopeful by the skin of my teeth. thank you.
I really enjoyed hearing the Eponine role sung in a different voicing. The first couple of chords let me know we were in for a great ride of chord variations and voicings. Beautifully and emotionally performed. Bravo. (Could anyone point me to a cast and creatives list? Thanks)
I hadn't seen this one before. The "Broadway Backwards" are by far my favorite clips to share with my non-theater loving friends. I only get to Broadway occasionally, but when it's Equity Cares donation time, I do dig deep into my wallet.
i came out to my dad today. it didnt go great, but i needed this... the fight continues and it will be better one day.
You are right. It will and It does get better. I’m glad you found this video. There are people out there who love you as you are. And give your dad time. It sometimes takes time for people to come around. My family came around after some time. Happy Pride.
It gets better, believe me... You took the first step.. congrats... I hope your Dad comes around...
Good luck!
You are not alone!
Congrats! Your dad probably just needs time to adjust. Be well and stay safe
That childless mother found a whole bunch of babies who needed her love, and they found a mom who would fight for and beside them. I love this so much.
How can something be both ridiculously inspiring and endlessly exhaustively tragic at the same time? Brava!
I think you just saw it
"Maybe if our son was not told he was going to hell his whole life, he'd still be here" was absolutely so raw I burst into tears.

I also love the change of meaning of Javerts part! He is actually one of my dream roles!
Why is it that every trans masc Les Mis fan I know wanted to be Gavroche and now aspires to play Javert? Every single one?
Myself included, of course. Stars is my standard audition number.
Born to "Little People," forced to "Castle on a Cloud"
When pink-shirt raised the "Gay Son" sign, and then sang, "I did not live until today" I burst into tears! What a powerful moment!
I am so in love with the fact that Chris McCarrell has played Marius before and here he’s essentially doing Cosette’s part ❤️
I'm not gay and I'm not French, and yet I am moved to tears. The armies of hate, which have gained beachheads in so many red states, MUST be defeated, and this gives me hope that they will.
Same here! I love every part of this! Complete with the new meaning to Javert’s part! I hope that didn’t sound sarcastic I really did love that part!
VIVA LA REVOLUTION !!! 🇫🇷🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Tears are squirting out of my eyeballs...amazing rendition of this song. I love my trans son dearly and I will fight for him and his community
Thank you amazing parent
You are the definition of what a parent is supposed to be - an unconditional supporter of your child - Peace, Strength and Love......
Eponine was hands down the best singer of the bunch!
Eponie lonely song was the anthem of my lonely teenage years, i love how fitting this interpretation was because the feminine dudes still often go unseen in terms of love within the gay community
So beautifully done. I’m the mother of a young trans woman, and this wrecked me, especially the mom.
Sending love and hugs 🤗🤗❤
I hope your daughter is doing well! ❤
This moved me to tears. I’m the adopted daughter of a transgender parent. We lived in a small town and it was in the mid 1980s, when this fact was brought to light during an ugly divorce. Much love to you and your parent 💞🌈💞
as a queer les mis fan this is everything to me. i’m fully crying. happy pride my loves

Same here. Happy Pride Month!🏳️🌈

From an ally to our LGBTQ+ community: We love you and we are behind you! Happy Pride!

Thanks. good to know I'm not the only one cryin'.
As a transmasc les mis fan, seeing Enjolras' part so loudly proclaiming transness makes my heart so so so full
❤❤❤❤❤
Same here, it hits me in such a powerful way and I can't stop replaying it! Solidarity and kinship; from another transmasc les mis fan!
Exactly!! I got chills. Does anyone know who plays him?
Many fans have theorized (or at least head cannoned) he's trans for a long time.
@@kaleidoscopekayley I was going to say, that’s just fanon Enjolras!
Javert' s change of mind was very powerful 😢🥺😌
For his wife and son. I'm crying ❤😢
That was one of the most powerful stories told in 9 minutes. One Day More is the perfect song to tell the story.
The shortest complete musical i’ve ever watched. Al storielines easily explained and well acted. Well done!!!
"One day more" makes me shed a tear every time they start to wave the flag (and I'm not even French). Haven't thought it would be possible to be moved by this song even more than usual. But this? This left me sobbing on the floor. happy pride everyone
Can someone just, like, write the whole musical of this? Loved it so much. As an asexual with a vile father, this hit hard🏳️🌈
When the flag started waving I lost my breath, this was so empowering and beautiful
I’ve been talking with my friends for a while that there should be a modern retelling of Les Miserables set in modern day America. This is what I meant by that. Thanks for making this.

I was the “cover date” for my friend for all his office parties. I get it. I’m nonbinary but didn’t know the word for it. He had been ignored by his father (accepted by his mother) since his boyfriend outed him in HS.
I need this interpretation as a full show.
Yes please
YES
Absolutely 100%!!!!!
Love how even with all the things they changed, "Eponine" is still wearing a beret.
Very
Anything opened by Jenn Colella is bound to be amazing. This is so beautifully done! The story, the emotions, the vocal powerhouses! So much talent on one stage! I love how these characters aren’t portrayed as perfect. They are flawed and deeply, deeply human. ❤
Was fortunate enough to see this in person. So glad the whole thing was filmed and now released.
As a queer trans Les Mis fan this means EVERYTHING 🏳️🌈
I saw a clip of the end of the song a while back and that alone was so powerful. I was not prepared for how moving and powerful the full piece would be. This retelling is needed with everything happening right now. Thank you Broadway Cares for producing it!!
Reminds me of our early activism and it's reason. I'm sobbing. Fab, thx
I FREAKN' LOVE THIS!!! THIS IS THE STORY THAT SHOULD BE TOLD!!!!! THANK YOU BROADWAY CARES FOR SHARING THIS!!!! HAPPY PRIDE!!!!!
I love this so much. I was not expecting to cry, but this song and the message these performers so passionately performed, brought me to tears. Happy Pride everyone!
As a teacher, all I can say is thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
I always love seeing all the genuine, friendly & loving allies of our LGBTQ community...The meanings behind this performance are so profound!
Tears everywhere watching this! Incredible!! Just what I needed to watch during pride month!

Speaking of fitting like a glove, that Eponine voice in the song, tho…
4:08 Her line delivery here gave me absolute chills.
Edit: And they never stopped. That flag at the end had me sobbing.
My heart is overwhelmed!! This is beautiful. Sending all the love to the LGBTQ community. Happy pride month 🌈
OMG, I am sobbing. This is perfect. We must keep fighting for our rights and to be seen. Happy Pride everyone. Please stay safe.
i am the biggest les mis fan u will ever meet and this is absolutely AMAZING!! I like how they changed the context of Javert's and the inn keeper's lines to fit the context, it was just so so so well done

this song always gives me chills but holy shit, this spin on it is just indescribable 💜
Thanks to everyone; a lot of work was obviously put into this.

Saw a short of this performance and was disappointed in the comments there, luckily it seems to be much more positive here!
I am literally sobbing. This was so beautifully done. Happy pride friends!
I got really emotional when the dad came back in and was supportive! I cried. This is amazing! Even though I am not the biggest les mis fan I’ve always loved this song, it’s so good to see it used in such a good way
Happy pride for everyone!
Crying with the first note. What a beautiful moving performance
This is incredible. Such a powerful new interpretation to this song. Bravo!
Wow!!!Just Wow! Bravo to all concerned! This launches Pride proudly and powerfully.
I lost it several times but seeing the pride flag waved over the iconic music and march really made happy
I need a full musical of this immediately I’m already hooked on all of the characters! This is so powerful! My eyes are sweating profusely Happy pride friends 🏳️🌈❤️
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed today. This is a revolution worth fighting! 🏳🌈🌈❤🏳⚧🪧🏛⚖ In tears.
There needs to be a full Les Mis show with this idea and cast. Happy Pride!
This is the best Broadway Backwards I have ever seen. And maybe the most important.
I'm the mother of a 40 y.o. gay son. The fight goes on. For our loved ones and for the society we live in love must win. Be kind.
Proud to be gay. Yes as an older gay male I did the marches, signed the petitions, did the demos, etc. in the UK. HAPPY PRIDE ALL
Absolutely brilliant! Good job everyone especially the "Eponine" character analog. Bravo!!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I can only imagine how powerful this was live!
if not security another stonewall
Every time I watch this, I am moved to tears. Just so amazing.
That was incredibly powerful. Thank you so much for everything. To my fellow LGBTQ+ people, we will keep fighting and we will not just survive but thrive
I’ve been waiting for an ensemble to make this into a queer anthem! Worth the wait! Amazing!
I absolutely loved this and felt every emotion that was given in this. I was in a production of Les Mis and our version of One Day More has nothing on this.
Oh, my God. Unbelievable. Ugly crying. Thank you for sharing. Happy Pride.
I'm sobbing and trying to smile at the same time.
Powerful stuff.
Much love from the mum and fiercest ally of my non binary Hatchling xxxxx
Thank you, so much; you inspire and give hope.
I was emotional the entire time, as an adopted LGBTQ+, AAPI, theater kid, this is everything to me. I started sobbing when the progress flag flew. ❤
HOW has this not gone absolutely crazy viral already? Wait for it..
There’s me thinking that they’re flying the flag upside-down because one of the stage hands made a mistake - but no, it turns out that flying flags upside-down is considered an international signal of distress/cry for help. Brb, crying…
I am an ally and i always will be. This moved me to absolute tears. This was a genius idea and beautifully executed endevor. Oh my god its perfect.
4:34 had me bursting out in tears. i'm so glad i'm not living in the us but things have been getting so bad all over the world and i'm keeping hopeful by the skin of my teeth. thank you.
just saw it for the second time, cried again, sign me up for a full "broadway juke box" musical of this.
I really enjoyed hearing the Eponine role sung in a different voicing. The first couple of chords let me know we were in for a great ride of chord variations and voicings. Beautifully and emotionally performed. Bravo.
(Could anyone point me to a cast and creatives list? Thanks)
This made me cry. So thought-provoking. We’ve come a long way, and have so much further to go.
I hadn't seen this one before. The "Broadway Backwards" are by far my favorite clips to share with my non-theater loving friends. I only get to Broadway occasionally, but when it's Equity Cares donation time, I do dig deep into my wallet.
The things I'd do to see a full production of this
YES
As a heterosexual gay affirming Christian, this brought tears to my eyes. Flippin brilliant!
You can’t be a good Christian and support lgbt
Brilliant. Heartbreaking. Spot-on. Thank you.
Eponine is the queen in this song! Fantastic!
OMG I am sobbing!!! This is so friggin powerful!! ❤🌈
Wow. The song fits so perfectly for the queer fight for freedom. Love this
I saw a clip of this on youtube shorts, and was so excited when the full video was released. This is everything i hoped it would be and more.
i am crying my eyes out. power to us all. the JAVERT adaptation my GODS
Oh my god I'm SOBBING, this meant so much to me. THANK YOU
